A fresh track, Track 10 began as a fresh Serpent’s Stout base aged in bourbon barrels with oodles of coffee and cacao nibs added shortly before packaging.

Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included.

We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 pounds of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 pounds of TCHO Cacao Nibs to steep before packaging.

Jet black, of course, with no head.

Aroma is very nice and contains no surprises. Chocolate, vanilla, bourbon and coffee.

Terrific flavour. The advertised flavours are all there, all taste good and, most importantly, mesh perfectly. None overpowers. Bourbon, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, oak and marshmallow all come through in a lovely balance. Considering how strong the beer is, the alcohol is remarkably well-hidden. It is obviously strong, but there is almost no heat, just a bit in the finish. The body is thick and velvety. The low carbonation level works very nicely.

Excellent. Expensive but it lives up to the reviews, for sure. A first class barrel-aged stout.

A - pitch black beer with a mocha head that dissipates pretty quickly. Some alcohol legs, no lacing on the glass.
S - huge coffee, cocoa, bourbon, caramel, toasted coconut, tobacco, sweet fig newtons, vanilla, cream, so smooth, probably smoother than kbs
T - big coffee, bourbon, vanilla, cocoa, milk chocolate, toasted coconut, nitro coffee, cream, whole milk, oak barrel, char. On par with KBS.
M - absolutely a 5 mouthfeel. Full bodied big stout, no thinning with the barrel aging. Alcohol is covered incredibly well. Aftertaste is coffee, caramel, vanilla, oak barrel, bourbon. Just amazing stuff.
O - if you're looking for a kbs like beer this is equal to or greater than kbs. Higher price, but god damn this may be better. Amazing beer.

Riding on the curtails of their famed Serpent Stout, this newer version of that same dark ale enjoys a similar bourbon barrel treatment but with a slather of cocoa and coffee flavors to accessorize, propel and round out the immensity of roasted grain that goes into the base beer.

Nearly pitch black through the center, its margins read slightly bronzed, the beer's plethora of roast signals all-things-dark to the nose. Dark roast coffee, dark chocolate and the burnt edges of grain are remiss of campfire, dark fruit and licorice-type spice with a pep of caramelized booze. Burnt sweetness carries the early taste with molasses, sorghum and baker's chocolate leading the way.

Roasted marshmallow resonate on the middle palate with its carbonized sugars clinging to the tastebuds. Fresh espresso roast mingles with cocoa powder for a sharp and robust taste that links up beautifully with the roasted grain of the beer. Seared sweetness, caramel, vanilla and roasted coconut carries the load through a flavor of cranberry, oak and licorice that share spicy and piquant nuances through the finish.

Full on the palate, the beer's robust taste allows its body to read fuller than actual. However, its acrid roast and tannic, almost vinous taste dissects the lingering malt sweetness and renders the texture relaxed and pleasantly somber. Its a complex roast flavor that pushes into the "burnt" realm more than most, perhaps a detriment to the passing stout drinker. A long linger of smoked cocoa and burnt sugar extends well past a spicy caramelized warmth and into the next awaiting sip.

Coffee, oak, bourbon, and vanilla. Caramel and chocolate. Not to thick, but medium bodied. Warming heat. Some roasted malts. Pretty solid.

I've long held Lost Abbey up as possibly the best brewery in North America. I had to snatch this one up when I saw it at Table and Vine in West Springfield, MA. Cost was $14.49 USD. Currently #220 in the Top 250.

BOTTLE: 12.7 fl oz. Brown glass. Branded black hood-and-wire cage over a (branded) cork. Awesome label art showing a bat-like demon.

Per the label and website: 13.50% ABV. "Imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee and cacao nibs added." "fresh Serpent’s Stout base aged in bourbon barrels with oodles of coffee and cacao nibs added shortly before packaging." "Barrel-Aged Strong Ale" Base beers are Older Viscosity and Serpent's Stout.

HEAD: Gorgeous creamy tan brown with a shiny rich complexion. Soft in appearance, evoking a supple dessert. Retention is about 4 minutes - not bad at 13.50% ABV. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque ink black. Completely devoid of light, which is apt in a beer with a hellish theme.

Appears aptly carbonated. Not unique in appearance, but it approaches special with the head colour and consistency alone. In any case, it's right on the money in terms of style.

AROMA: Subtle vanilla signals the use of quality bourbon barrels, replete with hints of toasted coconut, subtle barrel sugars, and rich white oak. Fudge-like chocolate emanates from the glass, suggested a layered chocolatey brew with intricate notes of cacao nibs, chocolate malt, caramel, and baker's chocolate. It dips its toes in the Hershey's syrup camp of chocolatey aromas, but doesn't dive in (thankfully). I struggle to find any coffee bitterness in the dark malt sweetness-emphatic aroma., but I do pick up on a hint of roasted barley. As far as I can tell, the bourbon barrel character has melted seamlessly into the base beer, resultant in a pleasurable harmony of the two.

Aromatic intensity is moderate. Suggests a delicious albeit rich dessert beer, but I do find the absence of any coffee a bit disappointing. Hopefully the taste delivers on that front.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Boasts a lovely creamy softness to its mouthfeel, accentuating the smooth milk chocolate tones of the brew aptly. Full-bodied with adequate heft and weight on the palate, though it never feels too heavy or overbearing (in spite of venturing a bit into an almost syrupy viscosity). Carbonation is near ideal. It's a filling brew, but isn't that what we expect in a dessert imperial stout? Silky smooth, with a luscious wet feel on the palate.

The bourbon isn't quite as evocative as the aroma promised, but there is some subtle vanilla bouncing around along with rich white oak. The bourbon barrel character complements the base beer nicely, but there isn't quite that gestalt harmony of barrel and base you'd find in the very best paragons of the bourbon barrel aged imperial stout style. Still, the bourbon and base are on equal ground; the barrel never eclipses the base in any way.

Chocolate emerges easily as the dominant note, with plenty of depth of flavour coming from cacoa nibs and chocolate malts. Fudge is evoked, and perhaps chocolate syrupy also. True to its Older Viscosity and Serpent's Stout constituents, this brew boasts layered sweetness and plenty of complexity. But the chocolate goes unchallenged by any coffee presence whatsoever, which almost unseats the balance (adding cacao nibs to an already sweet base only works if you compensate somehow). Sure, there's a bit of coffee-like acidity on the back end, but I find no rich roasted grounds, java, or the like. There's a hint of roasted barley that does lend some balancing bitterness, but I wouldn't mind seeing expressive coffee added (or even peat).

Has the subtle dark fruit Belgian bend you'd expect in a Lost Abbey stout. I guess I'd go with plum and prune; I don't get any gooey fig or dates. Some raisin, sure. Nougat. Some harsher burnt sugars.

The 13.50% ABV isn't as noticeable as it could be; this drinks like it's maybe 11% - which is still a noticeable level of warmth. She's a sipper - as she should be.

Flavour duration is moderately high. Flavour intensity is moderately high (which is apt for the style).

No overt hop notes. No overt yeast notes.

As it comes to temperature, the texture skews a bit towards the rougher end near the finish.

OVERALL: Track #10 brings enjoyable bourbon barrel notes to two base beers that are already quite well-executed, and the result - while perhaps not in excess of the sum of its parts - is a treat of a dessert beer that nevertheless has room for improvement particularly in terms of coffee presence, depth of flavour, intricacy, and amplified bourbon barrel notes. I can't endorse it as one of Lost Abbey's best beers, if only because they make so many excellent ones. I'm glad I tried it once and I'd definitely recommend it to others (even at its high price). Tasty stuff.

Pair with chocolate covered cherries or pomegranate seeds.

For a top-tier, barrel-aged dark beer, a surprising amount of carbonation has survived. That's not to say that it looks overly carbonated, but it has a nice, creamy-looking ring of bubbles around the edge. The beer itself is, of course, opaque and jet black.
The smell is out of this world. Tons of barrel character without being overly oaky or too sweet... but there's definitely sweetness on the nose. Tons of chocolate and bourbon, backed up by vanilla, oak, and that hard-to-place sweet mustiness (for lack of a better word) that I sometimes get from the Lost Abbey barrel-aged beers.
The flavor is very similar to smell, but a bit lighter and less potent. All the same notes are there, just less intense.
The mouthfeel is probably the only downside here. It still has a good mouth-coating feel like other great BA beers, but it still comes across as lacking the full richness and viscosity that you get with its competition. It could be a solid competitor to BCBCS if it weren't for this one aspect.
I love this beer. I'd still take BCBCS over this one, but good luck getting a BCBCS! Track #10 is much easier to find, and it blows away KBS'16. Kudos to Lost Abbey.

Pours thick as motor oil and dark as night. Nice brown head sets down after a few minutes and leaves no lacing.

Smells of lots of cocoa and coffee... some vanilla notes that I suspect are from the bourbon. Kind of boozy but in a good way. Taste is very similar, except the bourbon really comes out in the end.

The feel is very nice; thick and oily. Chewy finish with a wave of flavors that finish with a nice bourbon kiss. This is one that should get a lot more love from the barrel aged crowd.

My first barrel aged stout from Lost Abbey. Really liked the depth and complexity of this one. Should of gotten another one. Very well blended, not overly boozy at all.

This is a KBS clone. Taste like fudge brownies spiked with bourbon. This beer deserves it's lofty place on the BA top 250 list, but I'm lost as to why it's not in the top 50. Side by side I wouldn't be able to pick KBS out over this beer, and it's packaged in a much more attractive bottle. Where has this beer been my entire life? I sincerely hope there are more bottles of this beer in my future.

Heavy sediment, dark caramel ring around the dark brown grog.

Vanilla, dark chocolate, honey, fudge brownies.

Milk chocolate, oak, burnt roasty coffee beans. Very good.

Medium mouthfeel. Low carbonation. ABV tastes around 11%.

Very tasty brew.

Very dark appearance. Nice coffee and bourbon blend aroma. Very smooth bourbon and coffee flavor without an alcohol aftertaste. . A Lille on the spendy side but well worth it.

This is one of the best stouts I've ever tasted. The coffee is perfectly roasty and not overly bitter, the cacao nibs give it a beautiful dark chocolate maltiness. The bourbon barrel aging gives it the perfect texture and completes the flavor. This beer is delicious

Read the description and you've got the tasting notes. Bourbon, coffee, dark and milk chocolate and fudge. Hints of dark fruit vanilla. Perfectly balanced and a huge, creamy mouthfeel. One of the best stouts I've had all year and worth every penny!

This is a beer that's been in the back of my head for quite some time - reading about it and thinking "well I'll never get an opportunity for this to grace my lips!" Well, here it is, and it's just as delicious as I expected it to be.

It's a lot like kbs, no doubt, but with a fuller mouthfeel and a richer, more boozy flavor that I'm truly in love with. To be perfectly honest if this beer were at the same price point as kbs and as widely distributed it would kill. As it is now, it's an overpriced west coast curio that should never fall under anyone's radar given the chance to try it (isn't that how all of the lost abbey's beers are though? I remember drinking red poppy and saying "wow this is the best American made Flanders red ale I've ever tasted!!! But! Um! I... Could get a 4 pack of rodenbach gran cru for the same price...). That being said, I'm really glad I got to try it, being as I'm in la right now and all (375 ml bottle 2016 btw) and I maintain that y'all west coast folks are spoiled as hell. Good thing I've got family here now.

Seriously though, other than the price and availability of kbs, I'd put this over it any day

Black in color with no light penetration to light. There's just a hint of a fingernail of light brown on top. The aroma is a wallop of chocolate, coffee, and dark malt. I taste bourbon, chocolate, coffee, and dark malt. The mouth is thick and chewy.

A big bad 13.5% BA stout - Lost Abbey shows off their dark beer skills nicely with this one. I could have used a little more chocolate flavor, but honestly with how easily drinkable this was, I can't complain too much.

Cork and cage bottle into a brandy glass

Pours a dark as night brown color. Smell is of intense bourbon, chocolate, and coffee all intermingling with each other perfectly. Initial drink brings forth bourbon and dark chocolate characteristics. These flavors lead into a more subtle roasty coffee and milk chocolate flavor that finishes with a mild roastiness and lingering chocolate and oak flavor. This is awesome. I can see why it's so highly rated. Feel is semi thick but not overly viscous. Just right. Overall this is an outstanding beer that I will definitely buy multiple bottles of in the future.

I enjoyed this bottle chilled poured into a tulip/goblet shaped glass.

The color is black as night with opaque clarity and quickly dissipating head that falls to a ring but revives when swirled. The smell is semi-raisiny with some mild wood in the aroma with mix of bourbon and mild coffee earthen scent with some slight dark cocoa but the bourbon is dominant. The feel is intense with rich toasted and boozy character with saturation of caramelized sugar and light tannic quality from barrel aging with a warming dry finish and moderately carbonated throughout.

The taste has a roast coffee mixed with bourbon and toasted malt quality with slight cocoa and mild alcoholic flavor from the bourbon with hint of vanilla and caramelized sugar with toast of char in the barrel adding slight hint of smoke with dark coffee/cocoa and subtle dried fruit flavor as it finishes sort of spicy from the alcohol in the taste with more woody essence. This is very good -lots of dark coffee and bourbon in the taste as drinkable as it can be for being a 13% barrel aged beer. The only drawback for me is the amount of alcohol in the taste -less drinkable than some other 13% stouts(serpent's even?)

Pours black with dark brown highlights at the edge. Very slow forming head reaches half a finger high and is dark khaki color. Recedes quickly and no lacing.

Rich, sweet bourbon aroma. Strong dark coffee. Oak, vanilla, and roasty/toasty malt. Caramel, brown sugar, and a touch of smoke.

Bourbon is less strong on the tongue but still prominent. Coffee and semi-sweet chocolate. Caramel, molasses, vanilla, and cream. Some dark notes of earth, smoke, and roasted malt. Just hints of alcohol.

Smooth, thick mouth feel. Moderate carbonation. Nice sweetness with an underlying bitter counterbalance. Lingering bourbon, barrel, and chocolate. Alcoholic heat but not distracting.

Superb beer. Bourbon is strong and smooth. Tremendous balance and depth of flavor. Sweet and bitter.

Appearance- pitch black with no head or lacing.
Aroma- booze, barrel, chocolate in that order.
Taste- boozy chocolate bourbon.
Feel- oily and a little too thin. That being said, very enjoyable.
Overall- this is very solid ba stout. That being said its not a top 20 ba stout. Worthy of top 250 status but not level of kbs or bcs

My patience finally gave way. Originally purchased in March 2015.

Deep black body that no light can penetrate. Thick, foamy dark khaki colored head. Dissipated to a thing ring around the edge and whispy bubbles in the center. No lacing. Surprising lack of legs given the high ABV.

Sharp bourbon and oak in the nose. Very obviously sweet. Getting a little bit of plum and raisin. The coffee has unfortunately disappeared, which wasn't entirely unexpected.

Lots of bourbon hits first. Way more than I was expecting. Oak and vanilla/marshmallow in the second stage. The finish on this beer is something that needs to be experienced. It's just layers and layers of decadence. Semisweet chocolate chips, bitter baker's chocolate, and fudge all combine in a beautiful symphony. Dark fruits (figs, plums, raisins) are present as well, with the slightest hint of espresso bitterness towards the very end and the marshmallow returning with a vengeance. The fudge lingers on the palate for what has to be a record or damn near one.

Silky and oily, but a little thin. Low carbonation and a dry finish.

L: pitch black. Small khaki head. Slight lacing.

S: strong stout roast with bourbon. Good cacao presence as well. Slight coffee.

T: chocolate all over this with bourbon coffee on the back. Nice complex flavor .

F: silky with a dry finish. Very nice feel. The booze is well hidden.

O: very nice beer. I love the track series. Price point is high but so is quality

Pours dark with a head that dissipates quickly. Hints of chocolate, bourbon and vanilla. First sip resting on the palate coats the tongue- BAM!- well balanced tones of smokey bourbon, chocolate, and coffee. This a descent BB stout.

Pours thick, dark, and oily. Bourbon is the dominant element to me on the nose and palate with the cacao nibs showing up behind. Don't pick up the coffee as much as I'd like but still a really good beer.
