So my flight into New York was impressively late, but my wife managed to outdo me with her cancelled flight from the Minneapolis conference. I have time to kill and I'm at a bar near the hotel. My wife really shouldn't let me choose the hotel - its a mere 5 minutes from Rattle n Hum and a couple more from The Ginger Man.

Its a Friday night and I'm at the bar. No doubt the evening's storms have kept a lot of punters away, but its still pretty busy, and I've grabbed one of the few free seats in the house. I'm confronted with a wall of taps - 40 in all, and I have to note all of extremely high quality. Its East versus West IPA Fest with all the fantastic connotations that provides. Prices are New York style, but not too extravagant, and a deal is to be found in the $4 for any 10oz IPA option. I start with a Victory Hop Devil, and note that its exceedingly fresh. All the follow-up beers are in the same exceptional condition. The bottle menu has some great choices, but with such a high-quality tap list I deem it unnecessary. At the back of the room is a small cask bar, with a constantly rotating set of real ales. The Otter Creek Imperial IPA I had was certainly well kept, if not the wisest selection of serving format for the beer by the brewery.

Meals were voluminous. There's no getting away from the size, and its far too much for this Canadian. Standard pub food it may be, but like everything in this bar the quality is sky-high. Likewise the service, which is friendly, prompt and helpful, without being intrusive. But my cell is ringing, and my wife is minutes away from Grand Central. I have to go, but as I leave and find myself thinking that maybe flight delays aren't all that bad after all.

Monster great places, 2 locations mid-town. My go-to. Great happy hour prices. A crowded but happy place.

A very fine place to spend a few hours, 40 taps, some locally brewed, like Barrier & Other Half. The rest split between Colorado, California & Belgium, Holland. Great helpful service.

Great selection of 40 or so taps. A few decent bottle offerings hiding behind the bar as well. Lots of east coast/northeast stuff. Helpful and friendly staff. Centrally located to popular areas- Madison square/flatiron/Times Square. Food looked good but I didn't eat. Would definitely go back!

This place feels like an airplane hanger. Huge, yawning, cavernous.

The attendants are very present, but always seem to be in a bad, bad mood. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that the place is perpetually crowded by loud and obnoxious professionals loosening their ties and getting loaded.

Their beer list has some gems, and infrequently gets exciting local stuff (like Grimm, which is a rarity even amongst craft beer bars here) but for the most part it's more common craft.

I finally made it out to the famous Rattle n Hum. Overall I'd say that you can't go wrong with their impressive beer selection. I would definetely come back here to try more great beers. The staff is friendly enough, although I didn't really talk to any of them or get beer suggestions. The vibe is merely o.k. It is like a cross between a sports bar, fraternity bar, and craft beer scene. The decor is not particularly nice, but hey, I'm not a particularly fancy guy. Yet, the fact that it is not an over the top obnoxious frat house and meathead sports bar, and, the fact that the selection is so great, it will keep me coming back.
