We wanted to make a different harvest ale besides a fresh hop IPA so we decided to do something strange. This is a sour ale fermented on grapes from The Vineyard at Hershey. We then dry hopped it with locally grown Cascade hops from South Mountain Hops and also Centennial hops. The result is a blush colored sour ale with an INCREDIBLE aroma. Enjoy!

Had this on draft at the brewery.

Pours a ruby red/purple color with a thin 1 finger head of prickly foam.

Smells of hops, a bit vinous, and a little tart.

Taste is somewhat odd. There is a tartness that comes in followed by a bitterness and vinous quality.

Mouthfeel I felt was a little overcarbonated. Ok, but just a little too much.

Overall, I wouldn't get it again. Different, but the flavors just don't meld together for me.

32oz Growler

Another big thanks goes out to Ryan for this growler! Way to keep me drinkin'! Wow, I didn't expect what I got on the pour. The body is that of a rosé wine, glowing red. The fizzy head is kept alive by a torrent of carbonation. While the shallow head looks purely white upon closer inspection it has a pink blush.Very interesting.

The nose is wildly interesting. Grape must right off the bat with some tannic, chalky, woody stems. There's a good deal of early morning dew, you know, the earthy, everything is damp kind. With warming, soft sugar cookie malt comes across. Peppery grapefruit and orange flesh waft through easily courtesy of the dry hopping. There's a nice tart note but oddly enough it reminds me more of strawberries than grapes.

Unfortunately, the flavor isn't as bright or expressive as the nose. Tart grape hits immediately, mostly along the tongue. That sugar cookie malt is back laying a foundation but the dry hopping and grape additions rule the roost. Grapefruit and orange snap over the palate before quickly disappearing and allowing the tart grapes to take over.

A light body and active carbonation really helps highlight the nuance in flavor. Tannic dryness pops up on the finish, The dryness lingers as does the tartness. This beer is highly drinkable. An easy one to put away.

Hoptart is one of the more interesting beers I've had in a while. The nose is bright, earthy, and gets the salivary glands going. The flavor shows a good amount of depth. I'm really surprised how well the dry hopping works on a tart, grape aged beer. If I lived by Al's I'd be in drinking this often until it was gone for the year. Thanks a million for the sample, Ryan!

I cant recall how many times I have drank this in the past 2 months and never bothered scratching down a review until now. Served on tap at Pizza Boy, the brew appears a hazed purple to red with a white film that holds momentarily before fading to bubbles around the perimeter.

The aroma is fruity and vinous from the grape addition with notes of lemon-like wild lactic quality that really brightens things up. However, it also has a contrasting hoppy aspect with a grassy herbal scent that is very contradicting but enjoyable nonetheless.

The taste is tart and vinous with a dry grassy herbal hop note to contrast. It has a bit of dusty brett flavor and tannins from the grapes yet it also has nearly a vegetative quality from the hop addition.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is bitey yet enjoyable. Style/creative points awarded here for being very outside the box. While im not sure the hop additions did what they were hoping for, it certainly made for a unique and enjoyable brew.

First had: on tap at PB

Bright fuschia color with a slight chill haze, and a finger or so of bubbly white head that soon shrank to a thin ringlet; minimal lacing. Nice lacto tartness in the nose right up front, vinous, with notes of floral hops and cobwebby funk. Taste was similar, nice snap of tartness up front, but never overpowering, red wine and raspberries, with some nicely balancing candy sweetness, floral hops with a slight lemony sensation, subtle notes of grain husks and cobwebs. Medium body, crisp mouthfeel, moderate carbonation. Overall a nicely crafted brew.

Pour is. Watermellon pink with a bubbly very light pink head. Nose is a bit metallic, berry fruits, faint touch of lactic, subtle grassy hops to balance. Taste also has a metallic hint, flavors are nice but subdued. Fruity passion fruit, subtle Brett and some grassy hay like hops. Sourness is moderate, fairly dry finish with a balanced carb and soft light feel.

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden. A fresh hop sour ale? Sure why not.

A - Pours hazy red with a nice one finger tall white head, dissipating down to a light film, leaving little to no lace down the glass.

S - Smells of pungent centennial hops, light grape must, very light lactic sourness, touch of basement funk and some light graininess. This one took awhile to get going but once it did it was pretty good.

T - Taste is just like the nose, it is just more pronounced. Starts off with some intense centennial hop bitterness quickly being joined by the tart sourness that never really fades away. Hints of grape must, light funk and mild graininess help round things out. Finish is bitter and tart at the same time, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. The mix of tartness and bitterness in the feel keeps me coming back for more.

O - This is one interesting beer. It straddles the line between fresh hop IPA and Sour Ale at the same time. I am not sure if I have ever had a beer like this before. Definitely worth a shot if you are into either of the styles.
