Pours a solid ambered red color with a fluffy off white head over top that falls slowly, leaving chunky lace. A big cascade of bubbles comes up from the bottom of the glass. Nose is big in sweet fruity notes. I'm getting fig dominating, with a light peppery spice hanging in the background. There is almost a banana sweetness in there as well. Flavor is more subdued, with figgy and raisin plus peppery notes dominating. Its very drying on the finish as well. Feel is moderate, with a fairly active carbonation, keeping the beer smooth. There is a good bit of heat in my stomach from the alcohol as well. Overall, I think this one is a little uninspiring. I want a more forceful flavor and a bit more body in a beer like this. This one is just okay.

Crimson-saturated, particulate-laden, weathered bronze with blurry pumpkin edges. The firm, melba toast colored cap looks good atop the multi-hued beer and, for the moment at least, has limited itself to a thick, unbroken, short collar of lace. So far, so good.

The nose is interesting, considering the style. To be specific, it's much more citrus fruity than it should be. The beer smells like caramel-soaked sweet orange sections. No wait, it's more buttered toffee than caramel. I think I'll throw the style guidelines out the window and score it on enjoyability. Don't let any monks get ahold of Ho Ho Ho or they're sure to heap a few metric tons of monk scorn on it.

The flavor is interesting. The caramel malt backbone imparts a sweet, brown ale-like flavor. I think I'll use the toasted brown bread analogy again because it fits. It almost segues into pumpernickel, but the cocoa flavor isn't quite that strong. Dates are the dominant fruit flavor by far.

Hops of uncertain origin provide plenty of flavor, even as their bitterness is more than countered by malty sweetness. I can't decide if a true Belgian yeast strain was used or not. The flavor profile is growing on me as I get deeper into the bottle. I keep finding new flavors with each successive sip, the mark of a quality beer.

There's nothing much wrong with the mouthfeel. It's sleek and is reasonably smooth, increasing drinkability if one likes the flavor. Sessionability is probably out of reach with an ABV of 7.5%.

Ho Ho Ho Magic Dubbel is a quirky, interesting (there's that word again) version of the classic Belgian style. It won't make anyone forget the world's best, and it isn't exactly magical, but I'm having a good time with the bomber. The wacky, colorful, cartoon label (a Buckeye Brewing Company trademark) may just be the most Belgian-like part of the entire beer.

Served in the 22 oz. bomber, into a goblet. The color is a dark amber with a slight ring of head. The smell is a very light malt. The taste is an apple-like malt sweetness and fairly yeasty, with no noticable alcohol. Mouthfeel is average. As for drinkability, this is one that wouldn't be too bad to have a few of.

Not a great dubbel, but I suppose we could chalk that up to growing pains (not that long since Ohio became more than a 6% state). Hopefully this can improve before next year, but I might have this one again.
