bomber from Chuck's, Chagrin Falls

a: deep amber brown in color with a tight, short lived head, served in a wide snifter

s: heavy on caramelized malt and dark brown sugars, the nose also features dark tree fruits, sweet citrus, heavy spice - clove and juniper, almond, sweet alcohol, lemon, mint, and grassy citrus hops...a complex, interesting blend of aromas

m: rich, sugar syrupy mouthfeel with a low level of carbonation

t: rich brown fruit and candi sugars, buttery after warming, wintery spice, sweet orange, nice alcohol, a touch toasty to finish, earthy dried grass hops - big bodied, alcoholic, sweet, and strong

o: nothing traditional about this one, rich and all over the map, but it works it’s way into an interesting beefed up belgian winter ale

I have had this bottle of Nighty Night sitting in my aging area for an unknown period of time - 6 months? A year? 18 Months? I don't think it was a year. Anyway, I'm cracking it open.

Man, it looks fantastic in the glass, but the glass was really dirty from a couple Dogfish Head 90's. That's make anything look great. But really, it is dark, and clear, and has a pretty little head.

The aroma is to die for. I had to up the rating. It is that good. Sweet and sweet and more sweet. Drinking out of the Dogfish Head IPA glass is almost too much. The aroma is that good.

The taste is dark and sweet, but time has definitely mellowed this beast. My bottle has no ABV listed. 11.5. Wow. It is feeling big, but the booze smell and taste are well under that sweet, slightly yeasty taste. It's dark and mellow.

I am very happy that I aged this and overjoyed at how good it is. Too bad there aren't three or four more xmonth old bottles in my basement. I will get it again if that is possible (ich bin ein Clevelander).

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2013 bottling. Pours slightly cloudy deep ruby red color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, pear, apple, banana, caramel, toast, biscuit, candi sugar, light chocolate, herbal, clove, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt/candi sugar and fruity/spicy yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, plum, pear, apple, light banana, caramel, toast, candi sugar, biscuit, light chocolate, herbal, light clove, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, pear, apple, light banana, caramel, toast, candi sugar, biscuit, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor balance, robustness, and complexity of malt/candi sugar and fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately slick and fairly smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good Belgian strong dark ale. All around good balance and complexity of malt/candi sugar and fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Received this bottle as a surprise from a trade with Stinger80OH -- thanks, Andrew! Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a snifter.

A - Pours a reddish- amber color that is quite hazy. About a half finger's worth of foam tops the beer for an instant, before fizzling away to a simple ring around the outside of the glass.

S - Lots of raisins, caramelized sugars, stewed prunes and a spicy clove character. Pretty complex, with sweet and spicy aromas mixing nicely.

T - Largely mirroring the nose, the taste has lots of sweet, dark fruits and sweet, caramelized malts. Mid-palate sees a shift to the spicier side, with flavors like those you would find in a spiced apple cider or some similar drink. The finish is quite boozy, with a warming quality that lasts.

M - Rather full on the mouthfeel, with very little carbonation. A slightly sticky remainder on the lips.

O - Nice in small quantities, but it gets a bit fatiguing for my palate after a while, especially with the 11.5% ABV. This style isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I found this tasty nonetheless.

Appearance- Pours a cloudy dark red color. No head atop this beer, mild carbonation bubbles float from the bottom.

Smell- Nothing overpowering, or extremely exciting. From the smell you would expect a high octane alcohol beer. Mostly malts and sweet is detected. There is a hint of floral.

Mouthfeel- Medium body beer presents much carbonation up front that quickly dissolves to a stable liquid on the palet. The alcohol bite lingers on the tongue.

Taste- The taste backs up the smell. Smooth malty taste is noted first. Not aggressive as some beers try to be, simple and straightforward. Undertones not as prevalent are sweet, some floral tones. Not much of an aftertaste. Not overly exciting, but definately not a letdown.

Overall- Not overly complex, not to simple to look over. Good middle of the road in regards to flavor. Seems to be a simple malt beer, the name fits it well in my opinion. Not overpowering in the malts which is nice. As I'm writing this review I can't put it down which doesn't happen often. Give it a try if you have the opportunity. You won't be blown away but you will enjoy it.

Pours a cloudy dark red hue with a bit of browning to the light. Only a slight bit of carbonation that creates a thin white head.
Nice dark Belgian malts and a bit of a sweet sugar taste.
Taste has good dark Belgian malts to it. A strong taste of alcohol that hits me right in the chest. A bit of sweet sugar makes it balance.
Mouthfeel has a nice thickness and very smooth.
Drinkability is very nice on this beer. A lot of alcohol taste, but some very good balance. This is much more of a Belgian beer combined with a winter warmer. Very good job by Garin Wright. Good man!

Thanks, Paul.

Appearance: Bomber into a Bruery tulip. Pours the color of peach skin, and looks rather turbid and cloudy once in the glass. A finger of froth rises up, but doesn't stick around long.

Smell: Smells pretty strange, oddly savory and meaty, somewhat soy sauce-like. Plenty of spiciness that seems to be coming from the yeast rather than actual spice additions. Smells pretty damn sweet, too, with plenty of dark candi sugar and ripe apricot esters.

Palate: Sweet - really, really sweet. Dark candi sugar, warming alcohol, overripe fruit esters and peppery phenols. A fair bit of bite from the 11.5% ABV, which grows increasingly more astringent as the beer warms. The body on this beer is enormous, and the substantial amount of residual sugar really bogs down the palate after a while. The finish is burning - from both sugar and boozy heat.

Overall: This'll certainly get you drunk, but I can't say it's particularly enjoyable. Considering giving the rest of the bottle to the homeless guy with tourettes down the street.

Poured from a bomber into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy reddish amber with a layer of off white head the disappears almost completely.

Smell: Sweet and full of spices. I'm getting lots of malt with some warm alcohol and dark fruit and brown sugar notes. Definitely a holiday beer.

Taste: This beer is a bit boozy and bitter in the finish. Sweet malt with some spices, but the alcohol and bitterness mute those flavors a bit.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a very mild tingle of carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This is a slightly below average winter warmer. A bit harsh on the palette, I wish they would have lightened it up or smoothes it out a bit.

Pours a hazy orange-ish to amber color with a light tan head.. In the aroma, coriander, cinnamon, and a small alcohol note. In the taste, cinnamon, coriander, caramel like roast and a small alcohol presence. A spice like bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry cinnamon and alcohol in the aftertaste. Nice spice and big coriander, with a small alcohol presence all the way through.
