Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber with two fingers of off white head that leave some lacing with a layer remaining.

Smell: Citrus hops with some mild malt and a hint of soap.

Taste: Soapy citrus hops with some fruity notes from the yeast and some grain sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a mildly dry finish.

Overall: This one was just ok. The soapy hop flavor wasn't my favorite.

22 oz

Pours a clear amber gold, quarter inch of eggshell head retains very well.

Smells of bready malts and potent dry piney hops.

Flavor of mild toasty malt, hint of toffee, and pronounced dry woody hops. Hops are very bitter but don't contribute much to the flavor.

Medium to full body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A very hoppy IPA with lots of bitter but little hop flavor. Seems the wort was heavily hopped early and not much later. Not to say that is good or bad, just that this is what it is. If you're looking for a hop bang, this is pretty good, but if you want some of that west coast influence, you will probably be disappointed. It's clear to me this isn't trying for any fruity or floral hop presence, so it is good for what it is.

A very well balanced take on an IPA. This is a Midwest style APA and Cleveland brewers just know how to make a good beer. The hops are there but not anywhere near the level of many IPA's out there, especially the West Coast varieties. This is actually closer to a true English IPA but with American skunky hops that give it that resiny, even creamy mouthfeel. The head was impressive from the fresh bomber I bought. I would certainly buy this again. Go Buckeye Brewing!

Cleveland doesn't have the most impressive skyline but it's something to be proud of. Same with Cleveland IPA; its head doesn't tower with arrogance but is well-built, aesthetic and enduring. The liquid - bright, fiery orange colour with a waterlogged murkiness - looks substantial too.

A good IPA should have hops with hops - a pungency that jumps out the glass and springboards into the far, back caverns of the nostrils where it erupts like fireworks with citrus or pine or flower petal flavours. This one, however, greets you with more of a moist, limp handshake.

And it's not a quality control issue, though there is an undesirable iodine-like alcohol note that turns the citrusness of the hops into a kind of dish-detergent-like soapiness and makes the piny resins taste like wood cleaner. Doesn't spoils things entirely but I could do without.

Toasty caramel malt shift in and out of the picture, providing a spongy toffeeness to soak up excess alpha acids and herbal pungency. Again, all is in order except for the alcohol which stands out like a swollen toe and beats up on the smaller, weaker floral hop and honeyed malt notes.

Cleveland IPA, to borrow from an old British beer commercial, is a pint that thinks it's a quart. This is a good or a bad quality depending on your end-game; hop-fiends looking for their fix are unlikely to be totally satisfied, but those that want to enjoy fruity, earthy flavours without having their palates accosted should be pleased. You know who you are - buy accordingly.
