According to Dann Paquette (the Brewer), this beer is a Porter, not an American Black Ale. It was brewed in London in 1855, so it is an English Porter.

22oz bottle into my mad Fox glass. Dark brown in color with a creamy, frothy, tan head to it. Nice head retention with good lacing on the glass as i drank it as well.
The aroma has a big herbal, juicy, citrusy hop presence to it. I get some of the darker, chocolaty malts to it as well adding some bitter roasty and sweet malty flavors.
The taste shows more of the roasty, bitter flavors with a little bit of coffee to it as well. I get some bitter-sweet baking chocolate flavors to it up front, while it turns more towards a sweeter, cocoa like chocolate in the finish. Throughout the flavor there is a pretty bold hoppiness coming through with more of the juicy, bitter citrus rind like flavors.
The mouthfeel is about average for the style with carbonation being a little above average. Overall it was a very flavorful and good beer. The hoppiness meshed pretty well with the roasty, chocolaty flavors, which is sometimes hard to pull off. A pretty nice beer overall.

The beer comes in a Coca Cola dark brown with a bit of reddish brown coming through in the light.
The aroma has a nutty toasty/roasty porter quality. Not huge of the aroma, but a familiar porter aroma.
The flavor follows with that gently roasted malt character, a bit of bready and caramel sweetness. However, the beer is quite vibrant hoppiness. It’s woody, herbal, and decently bitter. However, it’s not too overpowering. The beer is extremely drinkable with this good balancing of sweetness and bitterness.
A wonderful take on the style with its bitterness.
