I would give this place a B purely because its the only spot in town that has beers outside bud, coors, and miller (which they do serve here). However I won't because beer is becoming more popular and becoming more readily available at more chain restaurants.

When I first came when they opened, they seemed to specialize in having more german beers on tap, I was not a big fan of that but it was still cool they were trying to be unique. They had and still have a few taps of stone brewing which kept me coming in. But I kind of forgot about the place and when i started coming back recently it changed a lot.

They now have a few germans, and belgiums, and a lot of filler basic beers. Granted they get a few premium special kegs here and there.

What really bothers me is their waitresses, they would thrive if they just served food, however they don't know squat when it comes to beer. When I had tried to order a beer they did not know the name of the beer when i referenced the brewery they were still drawing a blank. When you have 4 handles of Firestone-Walker going and you dont know what that is, that's kind of sad.

The plus side of this joint, most of the locals order the very basic stuff. They are the quantity over quality type. So its a safe bet if you know they got some good beers in, it is going to take a while to have it finished off.

But with that said, dont go out of your way. If you have a decent watering whole near you, just stay put.

Good place for a "Das Boot" on a regular beer. Beer could be colder and happy hour is kind of tricky.

I gave the vibe a 5 because I like dive-y joints, to give you an idea.

This was Downey's first real place to get craft beer on a big scale. Although after being in the scene for a minute their selection does definitely lack. Too much Angel City IMO. No real knowledge with their staff. They just have a bunch of cute(?) girls that will just serve you what you order. No real interaction compared to other places. Food is not bad. A lot of bar food but their burger is pretty good.

Yes, they do have some good beers and it's in Downey. From their website, I got the impression that they were 1. a brewery and 2. they are very beer-centric. We were there on a Saturday night and it was not quite the experience I expected. First off, it's not a brewery as far as I know. Their house beers are made by Angel City, which isn't that great to begin with. We walked in and it was a club atmosphere....loud music, tons of young kids hanging in groups in total club attire. Ok, strange but we did get a booth and I had a Sculpin and a Dugana, nice. Our server knew practically nothing about what was being poured and from the looks of the clientele, I think most people were there to pick up and not drink craft beer...lots of Corona and large Bud mugs seen around. The establishment looks like an old diner and hasn't been touched since. Now I can't comment on how the atmosphere is any other day or time but on a Saturday night, it's a total meat market...maybe it's appealing for some, but unfortunately, not for me.

I had lunch here today, since I was in the area to do an in-person trade with a fellow BA. A day before, I went online to check out their food and beer menu. I saw a lunch special that included an elk sausage with homemade chips and house beer for $8. So, that's what I ordered.

The sausage was good, maybe just a wee bit dry. Most of the chips were tasty too, though I had several that were soggy. House beer was a choice of 4 different brews. They contract brew (don't remember exactly who). I had the Hoppy Foxy IPA. It was good.

I didn't exactly look closely at the beer menu, but it appeared half were BMC and the other half craft.

Service was good. My waitress made sure everything was fine with my order.

The one thing I didn't care for was the atmosphere. The large exterior sign was a bit faded. Inside, the booths seemed dated. Also, there were exposed audio and electrical wire everywhere connecting the numerous flat screens inside. It just didn't give off a professional vibe.

I'll probably re-visit and get another sausage lunch special if I'm in the area.

I have gone here several times since it opened last year and they have made a few upgrades. They now have 40 beers on tap with most being craft brews. They do have a few of their "own" brews which aren't bad. I like to stop by for a Stone Ruination and their great potato chips. The rest of the food is average. They do have about 8 flat screens if you're looking for a place to catch the game.

Not a place to go out of your way but if you're local it's a good place to visit. Especially in Downey (boring city).

Stopped by here for lunch after coming back from Los Angeles. In short, this is a decent resto-bar with a handful of craft beer, but if you want more detail, keep reading.

The inside was pretty drag when I came in, nothing glittering to look at. Old wooden acents around the bar, a few macro beer signs around the restaurant, two flat-screen TV's at the bar. The place was empty when I came in around 11:30am, but a handful of other guests started to come in as I sat at the bar.

At the bar, there sits two rows of draft and two sizes of glasses (16 ounce, 20 ounce) perched near the taps. Lots of common beer here with a small selection of micros (Lagunitas IPA, 3 Angel City taps, Hemp Ale). Downey Brewing did offer a house brew, a winter warmer, brewed by Angel City. Speaking of Angel City, I read somewhere they have ownership in this place, which may explain their strongish presence here. Two of the three drafts were special releases of that brewery, one of which I tried (a new Belgian IPA) and thought was good. $5 pints is what you can expect to pay.

Service was no-frills, but my food order come out quickly. I had a solid Philly Cheesesteak with all the trimmings. Maybe if the cooked steak didn't taste so obvious it was previous frozen I might have uped the food score.

If your a fan of Angel City or want to try a contract brewed beer by them, or happen to be close by, I would give this a look. Otherwise, save your resources because the selection in general is on the lower end of the beer geek scale.
