Style: Quadrupel (Quad)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Quadrupel is La Trappe’s heaviest ale with a stunning amber colour. Its warm and intense flavour is rich and finely balanced. Bought the bottle about a year ago. Been cellaring. Google'd the markings on the bottle and believe it was bottled in May 2014.
A: Bright mahogany color. Minimal head.
S: The smell isn't as present as the taste. Some of the bananas on the taste are there. A hint of booze and herbs.
T: Liquid bananas foster. Sweet, luxurious. Familiar Trappist "quad" taste. Booze well hidden. Not harsh at all at 10%.
F: It'd be more appropriate for me to be rating a fresher version of this, I think. Not sure it's held up the best over two years. At its ABV it should, but feel like it might've lost something with time.
O: Was excited to try "the one Durch Trappist brewery." Definitely something mysterious and wonderful with that moniker. This one of the most obvious "desert beers" I've ever encountered. Would be the perfect cap on a decadent meal.

Purchased at local coop grocery as a single bottle for 1.35 euros. Cloudy amber in glass with moderate head which dissipates quickly. Flavor is malty bananas and spice with mild alcohol and low carbonation. A very tasty brew that I would buy again.

Not my kind of beer. Yes, it has a nice spicy aroma with hints of vanilla, but the banana on the nose and palate is way too overpowering. Also, the super-sweet finish doesn't seem to go well with the high bitterness; it tastes almost like banana-flavored cough medicine.

Disclaimer: I don't like bananas.

33cl bottle poured into an Orval chalice.

L: Pours orange-red with very little head. Some lacing.
S: Banana, sweet malts; a faint floral smell too.
T: Banana, apple. Very sweet yet leaves a distinctly bitter aftertaste.
F: Medium carbonation, relatively full-bodied, but dry.
O: Far too sweet. I'm sure there's a lot of hidden complexity, but with all that sugar I'm not feeling it much.

Unique quadrupel. It's not up to style but has its own personality. It has nothing of the dark fruits you would expect from this style but it's all about banana, spices (nutmeg mostly, a bit of vanilla) and clove. Its hazy amber doesn't quite match to style but never mind. Definitely a sipper and even if it's become a bit more complex warming up I preferred it quite cold (8°C)

I absolutely love this Quad. In my opinion this is the best Quadrupel out there. And the reason is because unlike most other Quads (especially American Quads) which have the dark fruit overtones, this one has more of the banana, clove, vanilla and spice which I prefer. The abv is hidden very nicely as we'll. I actually horde these and age them in my basement and open for special occasions. Would recommend this anyone, and I've actually turned friends onto this beer and style. Cheers.

A - Pours a nice caramel amber bronze color with thick sticky off-white lacing with very little head retention across the top of the glass. One of the lightest colored Quads I've encountered.

S - Sweet roasted caramel toffee malt, banana, and cloves.

T - Sweet roasted caramel toffee malt with vanilla, banana, sweet white raisins, and alcohol warming in the back of the throat.

M - Some of the booziness on the first few sips permeates the sinuses, velvet rich, carbonation is assertive but dies down to a creamy texture.

O - This is a fine Quad but I'm missing the dark fruit and darker color that I'm used to seeing with this style.

Pours a very dark rusty golden orange almost appears brown in low light with a bit of haze and a thin layer of cream colored foam.

Plum, raisin, vanilla, yeasty spice, banana, and slight nuttiness.

Caramel and sweet raisins, clove, banana, spices, and vanilla sweetness.

Medium-full bodied, medium-high carbonation, creamy but fizzy.

Overall, another truly world class quad. Well done and needs a try.

This bubbly, strong beer has a rich, carmel color and a beautiful aroma. It tastes of fruit and rum raison. Me ale wifie has a frown on her face because this has glucose syrup in it ... too bad!

330 ml bottle pours into a tulip glass. Appearance; hazy amber with two finger tan head. Smell; like a teen spirit. I'm kidding. Smell; banana, clove and absolutely sweet caramel. Taste; despite of high abv %10, it is very balanced and one can feel malty sweet and banana aroma as well. As a result, I like this Trappist.

Pours dark amber, cloudy, with a creamy tan head. It has great retention with small sticky lacing. The aroma is mild but with light caramel and spice. The taste is spiced up front with the malt sweetness on the finish. The body is creamy and mostly smooth with just a hint of carbonation.

First impression: color is deceiving being so used to dark quads.

L: dark straw with lingering lacing.

S: pronounced alcohol and bubblegum, maybe some sweet citrus.

T: light, gummy, yeasty with some malt.

F: medium "quad" mouthfeel, slightly dense, foams nicely.

O: different, good, you can tell it's high abv.

11.2 ounce bottle poured into a La Trappe glass.

a: Amber body with dark orange edges when held to the light. Hazy with bits of suspended yeast. Fizzy half finger head that disapated quickly

s: Raisin, banana, fig and cloves. A hint of sweetness and alcohol.

t: Sweet malts up front along with a dark fruit, like figs and raisins, a bit of woodiness in the spicy, alcoholic finish.

m: Medium full body, smooth with a bitter finish. Slight alcohol sting.

: Very good, but not great. Light for the style and balanced aside from the alcohol is very up front.

Pours deep copper with a very wide white foam head. Smell is malty, fruity, lots of spices and alcohol. Tase is complex, lots of layers, malts, sweetness, fruit notes, spices, alcohol, medium bitterness, no hops. Medium body with low carbonation. Great beer.

Appearance: Cloudy dark amber, big head.

Smell: Sweet, raisin, dark fruit, cake.

Taste: Sweet, big raisin flavor, big caramel, cake, big mouthfeel, lush and luxurious.

Overall: Revisiting this beer probably 11 years after the last time I had it. Still very good, big sweetness without being cloying, just a beer you can sink into and enjoy over time.

This beer is a work of art. Absolutely beautiful. Sweet, malty, with hints of banana, or actually banana bread - nutty, vanilla. One of my all time favourites.

What an amazing beer.

The only negative (for me, personally) is the high ABV that goes with the beer style. I can smell the alcohol quite a lot and I don't like alcohol :)

Currently, my favorite beer of all time.

330 ml bottle (exp. 02/2016, drinking in 12/06/2015), in a Leffe tulip. Brown liquid, with lots of sediments, of all sizes. Very little foam. Spicy aroma (some floral and smoked notes on nose, too), which translates to mouth. Some bread and sweetness notes too. Medium body. Alcohol is present, but very balanced. When it gets warmer, alcohol starts to show too much. Low drinkability.

Pale Amber in color with minimal head and no lacing.

Aromas of banana, bubblegum, clove, raisins, booze

Taste is is malt, raisins, caramel, warm booze, and hops in the background / finish.

Mouthful is medium and somewhat creamy with moderate carbonation. Finish is sweet/bitter and semi dry.

A very balanced beer between malt, hops, and fruit. Simple and straight forward.

33cl bottle

Appearance: strong amber, orange and ruby. Builds a medium head with light carbonation that dissipates rather quickly.

Smell: caramel, sweet, alcohol, pretty much like La Trappe Dubbel. I didn't find much a difference between the two of them.

Taste: malty caramel, really sweet and leaves a pleasant bitter aftertaste. I was expecting a wider range of flavors, the same happened with La Trappe Dubbel. To me, this is one of the first beers I didn't feel like it was a beer. The sweetness and almost not feeling the booze made it like that.

Mouthfeel: pleasant, the carbonation is there and numbs the tongue a bit at first, but I didn't feel it like a beer at all. Creamy and smooth.

Overall: I was expecting more from this beer, it's 2 or 3 steps lower than the Rochefort 10, which is the best Quad I've tried so far. A good beer, but I don't see myself drinking this one regularly.

A - Pours a hazy brown with a white head that settles quickly.
S - Aroma is banana and raisins.
T - Flavor is somewhat sweet, caramel and raisins.
M - Medium high carbonation and full mouth feel.
O - This is a very nice, drinkable Quad. Great aroma and flavor. My first La Trappe and I will buy more!

Poured into snifter. The color appears bronze at first but when held up to the light it's a ruby red. The head and lacing are milk-white and quite thin. It's very aromatic with apple, raisin, banana, caramel, and malt. The taste begins with tart, sour apple and dark fruit with a nice spiciness (coriander and clove?) and finishing with a touch of caramel sweetness. This is a medium-bodied ale with significant carbonation, and it hides the 10% ABV very well. It's very easy to drink. There's no discernible alcohol burn but it sneaks up on you. Overall, this is a very flavorful and enjoyable quad. It's one of the best I've had.

12-2-15 - On tap at TRIA Taproom in Philly. Served in their talk stemmed "T" goblet. Very classy. Dark brown in color with just a bit of head. Kind of s sterile attitude to serve this quad, yet awesome none-the-less. As this may be the original quad, I look forward to trying again in a more authentic setting.
4-1-2016 - Enjoyed at home on April Fool's Day. Poured from a 750ml bottle into a chalice. Nice amber color and very tasty. I have a barrel aged version of this and can't wait to pop it open.
