Very Good
La Trappe Isid'orLa Trappe Isid'or
Notes: Named after brother Isidorus, Koningshoeven Abbey’s first brewer. Brewed to mark the occasion of the Trappist brewery’s 125th anniversary in 2009, Isid’or was so well received that it earned itself a permanent place in La Trappe’s line-up. Unfiltered, slightly sweet amber ale with a hint of caramel, which continues to ferment after bottling and has a rich, slightly bitter flavour, and a fruity aftertaste.

Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country, zero reviews below read (yet!)...
L- Very deep amber, heading into light brown. Minimal haze, most sediment left in bottle. Poured with an eager and large head (tool a while to decant!) that is now down to 1Cm of fine-bubble light tan foam. ps 15 mins later, holds up pretty well, forms minor lacing, good for a 7.5%ABV beer.
S- Belgian yeast notes, plus woody-timber.
T- It's quite deep (and somewhat rich) yet it has sufficient hops to bring a mild zing into the finish. I get the bouquet of Belgian yeasts again, they're quite prominent here.
F- It's somewhat rich but well away from any overt sweetness. It has some pungency and depth that makes this a slow-sipping beer for me, anyway it's too nice to rush.
O- Very pleasant, very easy to drink... which I'd happily do again. By the end of it I'm getting major Belgian yeast notes, yet what I also realise is that within the Taste+Feel I'm not getting a broader range of identifiable detail. Suggest people start this off quite chilled and let it warm and open up as you go. For me, I've taken it slowly and it's over-warmed a bit at the end and the richness risks becoming a bit OTT for my tastes...
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed!

Unfiltered, dark amber with a greamy, beige, head that leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

Nose: Belgian yeast, banana, dried fruit, caramel, syrup, bread and toffee. Amazing nose!
Taste: Caramel malt, sweet banana, toffee, brown sugar, dried fruit, herbs, Belgian yeast and nuts.
Mouth: Full body with a smooth carbonation.

I LOVE this beer!

Pours a murky opaque color with a medium top off white head that dissolves quickly.
Aroma is caramel, toffee, plums, raisins, dates, candied sugar and herbs.
The taste is sweet and fruity with notes of dark and dried fruits as well as some herbal notes. The background has malty caramel and bready notes. Slightly dry and bitter finish and a strong aftertaste. Creamy and rich mouthfeel with a medium carbonation and a medium body.
Nice and enjoyable, but not the best one of the La Trappes.

A 330ml bottle with a best before date of July 2020. Poured into a La Trappe goblet glass.

Appearance: A dark copper amber colour with a one finger beige head that had good retention and eventually settled to a nice thin replenishing layer while leaving lots of nice lacing.

Aroma: Dark fruit, prunes, plum, fig, raisin, Belgian yeast, caramel and a touch herbal.

Taste: Sweet, dark fruit, plum, prunes, fig, raisin, followed by banana, clove, toffee and caramel.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, medium bodied with soft to moderate carbonation.

Overall: Looks great and aroma was nice too. But it was sweet, too sweet for my liking. The sweetness was so strong that sipping it was the only way for me, and even that was too much at times.

Pours a roasted-walnut shade of brown with two fingers of dense light-khaki foam. Head retention is good. Notable sludge at the bottom of the glass. Aroma is light nutty, earthy, toasty, caramely malts with just a hint of spicy hops. Flavor profile is nutty, earthy, caramely, toasty, bready malts with a bit of dry spicy hop behind. It comes off as a rather slick slice of bread. Mouth feel is still with a medium-thin consistency. Overall, it feels and tastes a bit like a hearty loaf of rye or hearty-whole-grain bread.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 11.2oz bottle.

Easy drink Dubbel with good malt complexity.

Found at a bottle shop in Namibia of all places. Pours light brown with a nice tan head. Nose is bread, raisin, fig, wheat, grapes. Taste is slightly bitter upfront, with a nice toffee, raisin, and bread layered on top. This is super nice to sip.

33cl bottle, bb in 6m. Edit: had a comparison to a fresh bottle with over 2y left. A dramatic difference.

Slightly hazy paler shade of amber. Fluffy foam of notable longevity.

Nose is prunes, figs, spice ..I would guess grains of paradise... and some unrefined sugar wafting out of the cellar. Not particularly unique for the style, but pleasant.

For the aged sample: Taste matches in terms of initial impressions but there is no blooming. What was promised in the aroma stays mute, and a cloying sweetness takes over. The mouthfeel is too thin, the bitterness too narrowly herbal and short. As the beer warms it becomes ever more low-dimensional. For the fresh bottle: the sweetness is much better balanced and the overriding sensation is of spices: nutmeg, maybe grains of paradise.

The execution is not at fault, the design is. The brewer ran out of insipiration at the aroma. Edit after sampling a fresh bottle: either the seller of the aged sample is incompetent in storage skills (could be, as it is the Finnish national distributor notorious for lack of expertise) or the beer has too long a bb date. When fresh, this is a good, slightly spicier take on their dubbel. Changing my review points.

Bottle reads ‘K02613’

Pours a deep rust-dirt brown with vague ruby hues and over a finger of fluffy, bone white head; good retention and solid albeit inconsistent walls of lacing hold to the walls nicely, while a thicker ring of foam surround the surface; fair amount of speckled sediment rests on the bottom.

Aromas of dark fruits, candied sugar, plums, light fig, caramel, and underlying milk chocolate; dark fruits threaten to overwhelm throughout, but various background notes present themselves with more prominence to offset this and add balance to the bouquet.

Taste brings further dark fruit, figs, subdued chocolate, and bits of earthy, herbal bitterness on the finish; solid, but a bit one-dimensional and finishes rather quickly.

Mouthfeel shows a medium body with consistent, nuanced, prickly carbonation; malty softness sits comfortably on the palate and leaves light fatigue while imparting solid flavor.

Solid elements to build with, but occasionally lacks both consistency in some places (mouthfeel) and dynamism (flavor profile) in others. In spite of this, it proves to have a nice enough foundation to remaining enjoyably drinkable.

Look: Cloudy amber with a fluffy tan head.

Smell: Orange, some dark fruits, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mushroom/earthiness, some hops, caramel.

Taste: LOTS of spices, alcohol, a hint of banana, cherry, followed by a bitter aftertaste. The aftertaste is just a *little* to bitter for my personal tastes, but it's not bad at all. It's aftertaste and feel is similar to that of a strong IPA, which doesn't quite fit for me even though I like IPAs.

Feel: Medium body, normal carbonation, leaves a warm, dry mouthfeel after swallowing.

Overall: Excellent beer!

Had on tap. Heavy on the clove and belgian spices, there is some candi sugar, plum and yeasts that are for balance, but don't quite add up enough. Still enjoyable, but make this very bright, despite the fuller body. Diving below there surface flavors, there is some depth with some banana, some mushroom and general earthy flavors, wish that would be more at the forefront
