Named after brother Isidorus, Koningshoeven Abbey’s first brewer. Brewed to mark the occasion of the Trappist brewery’s 125th anniversary in 2009, Isid’or was so well received that it earned itself a permanent place in La Trappe’s line-up. Unfiltered, slightly sweet amber ale with a hint of caramel, which continues to ferment after bottling and has a rich, slightly bitter flavour, and a fruity aftertaste.

Look - 330ml bottle poured into a 250ml chalice. amber in color, hazy, with a large three-finger frothy head that leaves behind moderate lacing.

Smell - phenols and sweetness hits the nose first, followed by dried fruits, spices, and some malty fragrance. overall complex and interesting.

Taste - initial taste is fruit-forward, which quickly moves to the spices then becomes malt dominant. caramel and some more spices towards the finish.

Feel - medium bodied, above average carbonation, and appropriate in ABV for the style at 7.5%.

Overall - a solid Belgian amber that has a lot of complexity and slightly less boozy than some of its tripel or quadrupel counterparts. quite delicious.

Bottle, 7.5% ABV, RBNAG 2009 in Vatlandsvåg. Orange to amber colour, moderate white head. Nice aroma of Belgian yeast and spices, some woody notes to, hints of leather. OKish flavour, some fruity and spicy notes. Slightly acidic finish.

Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country, zero reviews below read (yet!)...
L- Very deep amber, heading into light brown. Minimal haze, most sediment left in bottle. Poured with an eager and large head (tool a while to decant!) that is now down to 1Cm of fine-bubble light tan foam. ps 15 mins later, holds up pretty well, forms minor lacing, good for a 7.5%ABV beer.
S- Belgian yeast notes, plus woody-timber.
T- It's quite deep (and somewhat rich) yet it has sufficient hops to bring a mild zing into the finish. I get the bouquet of Belgian yeasts again, they're quite prominent here.
F- It's somewhat rich but well away from any overt sweetness. It has some pungency and depth that makes this a slow-sipping beer for me, anyway it's too nice to rush.
O- Very pleasant, very easy to drink... which I'd happily do again. By the end of it I'm getting major Belgian yeast notes, yet what I also realise is that within the Taste+Feel I'm not getting a broader range of identifiable detail. Suggest people start this off quite chilled and let it warm and open up as you go. For me, I've taken it slowly and it's over-warmed a bit at the end and the richness risks becoming a bit OTT for my tastes...
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed!
