Named after brother Isidorus, Koningshoeven Abbey’s first brewer. Brewed to mark the occasion of the Trappist brewery’s 125th anniversary in 2009, Isid’or was so well received that it earned itself a permanent place in La Trappe’s line-up. Unfiltered, slightly sweet amber ale with a hint of caramel, which continues to ferment after bottling and has a rich, slightly bitter flavour, and a fruity aftertaste.

Isid'or pours a welcoming shade of golden brown, with a fizzy froth of vintage white sitting on top. The brew is somewhat murky, and more than adequately carbonated. From the nose, I am picking up lots of fruit esters, primarily plum... apple cinnamon, some phenols, and a bready malt character. The initial wave of flavor reveals a big molasses taste, with fig, moving onward to a very spicy, alcohol-laden ending, and a fair amount of sharp hops. The finish is smooth however, leaving a very wholesome grainy flavor on your tastebuds. Overall, very good, but could use some improvement in the balance department.

Pulling the cork releases a big burst of oak with stone fruit. This is a young bottle - older bottles have more sherry notes on the nose and palate.
It pours a hazy peach under a 3" under a bone white foam cap that is persistent and lacy.
The young bottle has apricot to peach fruit flavors joined with a dash of pineapple while in older versions it turns more to prune and sherry. Light biscuit lightly flavored by caramel shows up in the middle and it dries slightly by the finish with a suspicion of cider.
The body is medium for such a big beer and the very fine soft carbonation gives it an extraordinary creaminess.

A: opaque brown, with off-white foam, thick and lasting
S: belgian yeasty, yogurty, banana-cloves
T: fruity with banana, black pepper spicy, belgian phenol (bitter>), as my tongue got used to it i sense vanilla and oakiness very strongly
M: very spiritzy with carbonation (nice) and finishes dry

Overall, it's a nice sipper. i really like this oaky character.

330ml bottle into a goblet.

Pours a slightly hazy dark brown although I did let a bit of sediment slip into the glass. Solid one finger off-white head with very good head retention. Lacing was just so-so.

Aroma is extremely fruity, even more so than other BPA's I have had. There is almost a tropical character to it but quite a bit of cherry thrown in. Also some peach and peppery spice. Quite nice.

The flavor carries over the fruitiness from the aroma with peach and cherry along with quite a bit of pepper and coriander. Nice bready malt in the background that plays nicely with the fruit. Very dry mouthfeel with abundant prickly carbonation.

Overall, this is a very good BPA although it fall a bit short of being outstanding. I love the fruitiness but the malt could be turned up a bit. All in all, though, a good beer.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of June 2014. Purchased from a Belgian supermarket while on a trip quite a while back. The label states that this beer was brewed to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the brewery and is named after brother Isidorus, the first brewer.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep coppery-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Yields a decent head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a thin surface layer. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of sherry, oxidation, fruity yeast esters, mild brown sugar, a twinge of marzipan and faint stewed leaves. Slightly vinous in character. OK but probably a bit old.

Tastes of caramel malt with a sweet oxidised character and a lingering finish. Notes of fruity yeast esters, subtle apricot, mild sherry, a hint of marzipan, light brown sugar, caramel, faint earthiness and stewed leaves. A twinge of cardboard in the background, followed by a delicate bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with effervescent carbonation and good body. Faintly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of sweet sherry, caramel and yeast esters.

Not bad, though it's pretty obvious that I've held onto this bottle for too long. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are reminiscent of fruity yeast notes and sherry. Somewhat oxidised and with little bitterness. Body is OK. Goes down alright, but I reckon this is overly oxidised and not as the brewer intended. I may re-review in the future if I have the chance. Worth sampling if you come across it.

750 ml. corked bottle. Pours an amber orange colour, with a small head that does not take much time to fade, but leaves a good lace and and a tiny layer on the surface. Smell of caramel, plums, raisins, cloves, apple and sugar. Medium carbonation, medium body, crispy texture. Tasteof caramel, oranges, sugar, plums, raisins, sugar and some spices.

330 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 3/5/2013. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy orange copper color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of golden raisin, plum, pear, apple, light banana, clove, toast, brown bread, candi sugar, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of golden raisin, plum, pear, apple, light banana, clove, caramel, toast, brown bread, candi sugar, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness. Fair amount of earthy clove spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of golden raisin, plum, pear, apple, clove, caramel, toast, brown bread, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast and bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/yeast balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Belgian amber ale. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/earthy yeast and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Beer that tastes so nice while drinking, that I almost forgot how it has 7,5% alcohol. The taste, and the aftertaste are so good, that it can be drinked when ever and with every kind of food. I strongly recommend to try this beer without hesitation.

Solid Trappist beer overall. Belgium maltiness and fruit flavors up front, with great carbonation. Flavors are well balanced, making for a crisp and clean taste. Good introductory Trappist beer for beginners.

The price is right on this one as it was one of the cheaper Trappist beer selections but is not cheap on taste. Would certainly try this one again.

Random find at a liquor store on the way home from work. Stamp of “12:40 K24H12.” Cool little 11.2 oz bottle poured into an Achel Trappist glass. Served slightly chilled.

Appearance: Pours a huge off white head which quickly fizzles away. Eventually only some wisps and a ring remained. Reddish brown body with lots of carbonation action.

Aroma: Candi sugar, dried cherries, prunes and sweet caramel malts. A bit of carbonation ‘bite’.

Taste: Dried cherries and prunes up front followed by candi sugars. Ends on a very pleasant malty note not unlike a fresh loaf of bread. Floral alcohol throughout.

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel with lots of carbonation and rosy alcohol. Definitely a warming beer.

Overall: A very sweet beer with lots of dried cherry/fruit notes, toasty caramel and brown sugarish malts. Very carbonated and warming. Nothing to really go out of your way for but I wouldn’t mind trying the oak aged version of this.

Intense caramel malt & Belgian yeast aromas, orange hues, as well as biscuit, herbal, flowery & phenolic notes. Sweet mild toasted flavor & spiced touch at first sip. Medium to full body. Moderate to soft carbonation. Oily texture & kind warming & well integrated ABV. In the middle, fruity, delicate & low bitterness rounded by gentle notes of wood resolve in a very subtle citric zest astringency. Sweet/bitter finish. Fruity aftertaste & spicy hints. Refreshing, flavorful & suggested for a paused drink !!

Trappist beer lite. Suitable for introducing the style to someone you think might be scared off by the sturdier stuff. Works best if its served up room/cellar temperature instead of cold so that all the flavours and aromas have a chance to work.

Lots of caramel and sugar. Very sweet, but not tooth jarring. A bit of dark fruit. Lots of spice and yeast. Comes across as reminiscent of a weiss. Fairly easy drinking.

Has a very unattractive pond water brown color with a fizzy head of bigger bubbles that sounds away to some scuzzy foam trappings.

Semi-sweet apple aromas with a delectable juiciness that comes adorned with fleshy notes and assorted bruised fruits. Pear and fresh fig factor in, also, with appealing esters that don't come off as muddled or contrived. Vibrant with pale and dark fruits. Light toast character melds well with nectary Belgian malts and low phenol levels. Musty grape and slight perfume notes are other layers in the aroma. Complex.

Spicy start on the palate that is quite short of brutal, although a decent stack of alcohol gives you a good jolt. Massively fruity, still, showcasing more apple and pear and grape than anything else. Some apricot and hints of cherry also come out. It gets a little sweeter as it warms up, but the candi sugar notes are secondary. Yeast has become quite formidable, as I'm noticing a nutshell flavor stirred in with the sweetness of the caramel malt.

A good body with a wetness that fills out the mouthfeel without coming off as too oily or textured. Smooth, as there's a contained level of carbonation that doesn't seem to want to isolate itself. It does show up late, the most. Gas is ideal, in these ways.

A lot of heftiness and flavor coming at you, however, without being bold. A sturdy Belgian golden ale with a darker side.

11.2oz bottle poured into a La Trappe Chalice. Date stamp of 15:03 K05C13. Poured carefully to keep most of the sediment in the bottle, but a tiny bit came along with the pour.

Appearance: Hazy red-amber (auburn) beer with a thin off-white head. Some small strands of delicate persistent lacing. Held up to the light you can see the carbonation coming up.

Smell: Yeast mostly - a few fruity esters. With a swirl some green banana.

Taste: Candi sugar, some banana, some fruit notes, spiciness in the middle, and the finish is leafy herbal and mildly bitter. Complex would be a good way to describe it.

Mouthfeel: Well carbonated - scrubs the palate clean. An almost airy mouthfeel. Only towards the end of the glass is there some very slight stickiness noted, but even then it is still a light mouthfeel.

Overall / Drinkability: Definitely better as it warms up, as when first poured and cold I wasn't that impressed. That being said, I always feel like I'm missing something when I put a Trappist Ale in a chalice, that I'm not concentrating all the complex flavors properly and I'm missing something. However, this could be the point: the monks just want me to drink it and not obsess over it. It's just beer that they made for charitable activities. Or maybe it is more of a visual wow that they're looking for: Look at that glass! Now look at what is in it! So here's my conclusion. Great packaging, but the inside contents are just good, not great. I wouldn't mind having a bigger glass, but I'm okay with the fact that I just have a 11.2oz as well. So overall, I think above average, but not hugely so for a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. There are better examples out there.

Enjoyed out of a brown 330 mL brown bottle with the La Trappe embossing on the neck of the bottle. The only information to mark when this might have been bottled is a production code for which I do not have the decoder, so I have no idea how old this beer is. Given the style, it likely doesn't matter as long as it's under a couple years old. Poured into a large brandy snifter.

Appearance - This has to be the darkest looking Belgian Strong Pale Ale I've ever seen. Rather than tones of yellow, gold, orange and amber, this one is coppery, cinnamon-stick brown with some faint orange highlights where the light manages to penetrate the liquid and massive head. Speaking of which, atop the mostly brown/burnt umber body is a towering and effervescent looking head, about three-to-four fingers thick. Mostly microbubbles save for a few medium sized bubbles that begin to burst, giving the impression of swiss cheese. Head is the color of creme and leaves visible, but faint lacing as it slowly begins to dissipate.

Smell - As I wrote when I first took a whiff of this, it's almost a banana bomb. The fruity phenols dominate the aroma, but they are one note, giving the strong impression of banana and banana bread. A little bit buttery as well, which is odd considering this is not the oak-aged version of the beer. Some sweeter notes of caramel malt come through as well, but in a supplementary role to the phenols.

Taste - Not quite as heavy on the banana-like phenols, but they are still quite dominant. Luckily now there are some other fruit elements as well--but of the dried variety: dates, figs and perhaps prunes. A little bit of bakery spice and toasted caramel come through as well along with some faint esters from the high alcohol.

Mouthfeel - Creamy and medium-bodied, with ample carbonation and an effervescent feel, almost like if champagne had more heft to it. Aftertaste is mostly sweet.

Overall, an alright beer. Not one I'm likely to rush out to buy again, but I might have it again depending on the other options I had available to me. I can see this one being appealing to those who like Dubbels or other Belgian Dark Ales, as it seems to skirt the line between styles a little bit to me. Not as much on the dark fruits, but the overall profile is definitely different from many of the top-notch BSPAs I've sampled.

From the bottle stamped 14:19-K85C13. Sampled on October 14, 2013.

The pour is an attractive looking heady orange-amber with a faint cloudiness making it a tad opaque. Good carbonation.

The aroma is of Belgian pale malts, toasted biscuit, pear, yeast, and thin hops.

The body is medium and astringent.

The taste tends to have a higher bitterness than the aroma might suggest. There are upfront Belgian malts and pear or other fruit along with a moderate lingering after taste. It has its redeeming qualities.

A birthday beer for me! On tap at Brass Tap Gainesville. Pours a cloudy copper with small creamy head. Aroma of plums and figs, candy sugar, and a bit of yeast. Flavor is big plums, and more plums. Wow straight up fruit flavor here with some candy sugar sweetness. Easy drinking with medium mouthfeel. Excellent beer, but not quite as good as the barrel aged version.

Reddish-light brown in color with orange hues. Off-white two finger head with medium retention.

Rich, warm aromas of molasses, dark brown sugar, ginger bread cookies, christmas pudding and pumpernickel bread. Brett actually dries the sweet tones out slightly.

The richness continues on the palate with caramel, molasses, black bread, gingersnaps, wet animal fur and orange marmalade. Black fruit notes and allspice on the finish.

Medium+ body with a rich mouthfeel. Full bitterness on the mid-palate and finish balance the richness in the beer. Nice, long finish.

Served in a tulip.

Appearance- Small cream-colored head, body orange to copper, clear but not brilliant.

Aroma- Sweet malt, a nip of alcohol as it warms up. Very light floral.

Flavor- Raisins, some minerals, some phenolic character. Unique bitterness. Maybe that's an astringency that I can't place.

Mouthfeel- Medium creamy body, tastes somewhat sweet but Hmmm. Different. Kind of slick on the top of my mouth but I'd say the finish is somewhat dry.

Overall- This is nice. I'm not really familiar with the style, and it was a nice nightcap.

Bottle into a Chimay goblet at World of Beer - SMU.

Muddy copper, completely opaque, burnt orange at the edges. Thin, filmy head of off-white.

Good amount of maple, brown sugar, raisins in the nose. Sweet, dark, rich aroma. A hint of toasted bread.

Burnt raisin bread flavor. Less maple, hints of vanilla, green apple, strawberry. Smooth alcohol. Lingering burnt malt.

Medium body, highly carbonated. Big fizzy bubbles. Alcohol is fairly well hidden.

Need to let it warm to bring out sweetness. Good, could be more complex. A smooth drink, though.

A-Pours a rich, slightly hazy amber with a generous tan head.

S-Bready and sweet with a strong dose of candi sugar and hints of Belgian yeast.

T-Very fruity, like a fresh pears , with lots of juicy sweetness. A bready malt comes to the fore in the finish and then just a hint of sour twang.

M-Medium bodied with high carbonation

D-A very solid example of the style. Nicely sweet but not overdone.

La Trappe Isid'or, named for Isidorus, the first brewing monk in the history of the Konigshoeven brewery, was released several years ago (2009, I believe) for the brewery's 125th Anniversary. When it first came out, I went through about three kegs on tap at the Blue Nile, and took notes one night, but somehow lost them. Gone somewhere in the missing spaces in the internet.
I put it on again not too long ago, last year or the year before, and I kept meaning to re-review it, and never got around to it. Well, it's back, and the third time is the charm...I think...we'll see...doing it now, before I go home to take on the oak-aged version.

7.5 % ABV. Belgian-style pale ale, or strong pale ale?

The look: gorgeous burgundy, reddish-brown coloring, opaque, showing clearer at the foot of the glass, underneath a creamy off-white head of foam, a good 1/2 inch, long-lasting, looking great.

The aroma: I'm getting hops first, a particularly floral, herbal, fruity hop, grown at the monastery, called Perle. Apple and apricot with a caramel twist. Malt flavors linger here, too. Utterly pleasant and arrestingly simple in it's complexity.

The taste: Smooth plus rich. Totally even, completely cool, balance incarnate, but a wonderful blend of tingly, tangy hop sensations on the palate, with the herbal, fruity malt flavors. terrific mix. A maltier, bigger Belgian pale, close to a Belgian amber, but really a thing unto itself. This feels, to my memory, a bit different from when it was first released, but I could be completely wrong. Maybe I was expecting something bigger, thicker, boozier, perhaps, and was disappointed.

What this is, is excellent. If you're not chasing after trappist rainbows or Belgian unicorns, just relax and be happy, get lost and ....taste the silence. Yeah....

I like this beer a lot. you should have one.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance- The beer pours a lightly hazed orange amber color with a one finger just off white head. The head fades relatively quickly leaving a lighter level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of some lightly toasted Belgian malt with some aromas of tropical fruits as well as a decent citrus hit. Mixed with these sweeter fruit smells and malt smells are some notes of a hoppiness and a bit of a yeastiness. The hop brings a grassy and herbal smell while the yeast smells bring with them aromas of banana and some spice.

Taste –the taste begins with a drier fruit flavor of a mix of citrus and grape. It has almost a wine like flavor in the fruit, but it also has a nice amount of a Belgian grain upfront which balances out he fruit to produce a Belgian triple like flavor up front. A yeastiness soon comes to the tongue and brings with it lighter flavors of banana and a moderately stronger clove and coriander taste. These tastes are later complimented by hop flavors of a grassy and herbal nature that were detected in the nose, but also a little bit of an earthy like flavor. All in all, the flavors end up leaving a dry and balanced hop and malt flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that is just above normal. The two in combination crate a very crisp and clean feel on the tongue and fantastically match the flavor profile of the brew.

Overall- A rather nice, tasty, and drier Belgian strong with just the right level of hop to compliment the flavors of the brew. Rather easy drinking and a good brew to try.

A-Translucent orange/amber, two finger head

S-Some plums, clove banana, wheat and yeast.

T-Plums and other fruits, very fruity. Some bread and caramel as well.

M-Light, dry, slightly carbonated and crisp.

O- Better than the Oak Aged (might be due to differences in age) and one of the better offerings from this gang of monks.
