Served in a St. Bernardus chalice, it pours a murky, deep and dark orange.
It forms a two-finger head with low retention. No real lacing.

Bouquet is of apricot, overripe apple, brown pear, caramel, honey, spiciness, slight breadiness, grassy. Alluring.

Nice, expressive carbonation upfront. An onslaught of flavor follows.
Huge pepper and clove, tea-like sweetness, the same fruitiness as in the nose, lemon, caramel, vanilla, cinnamon. The note of honey is the most similar to actual honey that I've had encountered so far.
Unbalanced beer tilting towards sweetness all throughout, yet there is a constant subdued bitterness, which provides a counterweight and complexity.
This beer enters its finish with a very assertive herbal note, which is equally refreshing. Long aftertaste, which leaves a fruity ambient in your palate.
High and nice carbonation, medium to low body, slightly smooth.

Excellent, excellent beer.

Really really really good. Full on malt attack and yet bone dry aftertaste smells fruity and delicious. Almost no booziness which at 8% is mighty dangerous.

The beer comes in a medium amber color, very dark for a tripel.

The aroma hits of overly sweet banana, pear, clove, sweet citrus, biscuity sweet malt.

The flavor follows with sweet banana, hints of clove, a peppery spice, a a medium body with a prickly carbonation towards the end.

In addition to Chimay, Koningshoeven is the other Trappist brewery that offers a nice sampler with a glass (La Trappe's is an exquisitely shaped bowl-like glass that I've bought twice for both and probably would do so a third time.)

Looks like a strawberry blonde (a nice one, too.) Smells are malty, typical of the style; but La Trappe's seems more nutty than fruity. Taste is largely the same, but I noticed that the pepper seems highlighted more by La Trappe's yeast. (This I actually prefer to over-hopping a tripel.) Spicing continues a bit too long and a bit too dry for a good-food tripel, which was what I was looking for. (Next time, I just have this with cheeses.)

Nearly a classic in my book, La Trappe's Tripel is reviewed in Roger Protz' CAMRA classic "300 Beers To Try Before You Die!" And I'm glad I've tried -- and returned -- to it.

What a beer. Climbed it's way up into the top 3 tripels for me.
I love the taste and aroma. The aftertatse just leaves me wanting more and more. I have to pace myself on this strong beer.
I do wish that more bitterness came through, but it doesn't detract from this one. It would have simply added to it.
I am loving this brew right now.
