Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
La Trappe Tripel’s aroma is slightly malty and estery. Despite its full, rich flavour, this out-of-the-ordinary ale still has a light and dry aftertaste with a touch of bitter finesse.

A very loud pop of the cork, pours a nice amber body with a lovely thick white head. Very fruit aroma. Taste: fruity, slightly salty, some grain, banana, raisin & more fruitiness. Plenty of carbonation. An excellent tripel.

Freshly baked bread gives way to soft spicing and fruits. Pear and baked apple. Yeasty. Bone dry and highly effervescent. Warming boozy sensation. Medium bodied and softly chewy. One of the driest tripels I've come across, and perhaps more reserved.

Planning on brewing a tripel so I want to get a feel for the style again. I've been living off these nonstop GOAT San Diego IPAs so I've forgotten about the glories of Belgium. Time to bring them back.

Look: Beautiful. I poured it into a wide porter glass with Newcastle written on the side. A chalice would be better but even still the colors showed exquisitely. Dark amber in the center of the glass but fading rapidly to a golden glow at the edges. Hazy but not cloudy, which makes it seem like the light is coming from within. The only knock is the head, which although nearly perfect, deflated just a shade too quickly. It could have been my glass although I do take care not to have any surfactants contaminating it.

Smell: Idiosyncratic. Wine? Hops and flowers, malt/sugar, booze, and it changes as the beer warms in the glass. At the warmest temperatures it smells the most balanced, but loses many of the characteristics of each temperature phase. Not my favorite aroma but extremely interesting.

Taste: Too bitter at colder temperatures, and the nose is definitely more complex. But this is a well balanced beer that does not get boring.

Feel: Not quite effervescent enough. Missing that brightness that really sets apart Westmalle or Chimay, and gets just slightly leaden.

Would I buy this again? Only if other options aren't available. But it is an excellent beer, and a great change of pace.
