Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish tulip

L: Clear golden copper pour. Thick foamy off-white head. Great lacing.

S: Malts and grains. Citrus and pine.. thyme.

T/F: This one is kind of a malt bomb. Sweet grains and malts. The hop profile feels muted... notes of citrus... a bit of resin, but more sweet malts, honey, and alcohol. Cleans up a little at the finish, but overall lacking in bitterness and hop character. Medium to thick in body. Well carbonated.

O: Unbalanced in favor of malt and honey sweetness. Not bad per se, but not what I'm looking for in an IIPA. Another Sly Fox beer that doesn't stack up.

$ 2.31 (Including Beer Club discount and tax)/12 oz can ($ 0.193/oz) at State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD.
BB 05/21/17 (Can bottom) at 42 degrees served into a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – pine and citrus.
Head large (Maximum 6.4 cm, aggressive pour), off white, semi-dense, frothy, average retention, diminishing to an irregular tree to five mm frothy ring with drag marks and partial rings of lacing. Several small rocky islands make up the partial layer.
Lacing – fair. Some partial rings, drag marks, and small islands, all with tiny to medium bubbles.
Body – orange, very slight haze.
Flavor – begins moderately bitter with a hint of malt and an oily citrus aftertaste. No alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, oily, soft carbonation.

Not really liking this. Route 113 is a much better example of what Sly Fox can do with IPAs.

Appearance 4, Aroma 4, Flavor 3, Palate 3.25, Overall 3.

Good local beer for me. Seems underrated on the BA score.

Drank straight out of a can at a festival for the brewery so I gave it an average rating for appearance, just to err on the side of caution. Smells primarily sweet and malt forward: some caramel, honey, sweeter citrusy smells like pineapple, and something a tiny bit funky like hay. Taste is again more malty than hoppy, but there's certainly a decent bite of bitterness right at the finish. Lots of sweetness up front, with some grapefruit hops coming in midway, and a very dry, black tea like finish. Personally I thought the flavor of this was somewhat subdued...it's sweet, but not that sweet; it's bitter, but not that bitter. I found it to be a more drinkable IIPA than most I've had for that reason, but it's overall somewhat lacking in flavor.

Generous two finger head, frothy with a great many larger bubbles creating an uneven surface, the lacing is wispy but is spread all around the glass. The liquid is a darker amber orange, this aided by the large amount of particulate floating about, strong quantity of smaller bubbles aggressively pushing upwards. The nose at first features a peppery salinity as well as freshly mown grass, however, it moves over to honey, grapefruit reduction and danker tar, muddy earth and black tea leaf notes, a bit too tightly wound to offer anything but minimal pineapple, papaya, star fruit scents. Full-bodied, dry with a good deal of extract which glues it to the palate. Honey, molasses and caramel exert themselves to bring sweetness to the proceedings, cocoa and orange extract too. More of a core here to the apricot, nectarine, pineapple fruit. Very piney and peppery, with its high level of bitter herbaceousness it is likely trying to compensate for the malts. Anyway, for all that is going on it finishes on the short side, the carbonation having fluffed up the start but not able to assist by the end. It’s a solid, not spectacular, brew that goes for the sledgehammer approach.
