Sly Fox Brewing Co. "Hop Project No. 006 DIPA"
16 fl. oz. can, CANNED 03/06/18"

Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm quite surprised that no one has reviewed this, I guess it got lost in the shuffle. It's poured a cloudy orange body beneath a finger-thick head of yellowed off-white. Small particulate is visible is suspension. It looks a little bit like a hefeweizen except the head is darker and not as tall. OK, on to the aroma... it's floral and fruity, and some sweetish biscuity and lightly caramelish malt comes through as well. I expect that malt in a double IPA but it's not always there. I'm getting notes of apples, berries, peach, pine, and citrus that includes a orange, a drop of lemon, and just a hint of grapefruit. On to the flavor... well as expected, it follows the aroma. I'm getting more pine than I found in the nose, but that's about it. The malt is rich and sweetish but not sweet, and a solid bitterness keeps it in check and helps it to finish mainly dry - there is some residual malt but it fades readily. That's some pretty tasty stuff, and it's nicely balanced. I'm a little surprised in all honesty that the variation of hop flavors works so well together. With each new sip you might find a little more of one than the others but they all remain, and the bready, almost cake-like maltiness is a great support for them. In the mouth it's full bodied and creamy with a moderate, fine bubbled carbonation that leaves it velvety smooth. There's a suggestion of alcohol to it, you can sense it, but it doesn't jump right out at you and I expect that of a double IPA. I think without it you might feel like something was missing, and to a certain extent it's helping to dry it in the finish. How strong is this? Nothing on the can. Let me look it up... 9.1% abv, I wouldn't have expected that. Great. Their website also lists it as having 62 IBUs which seems right on to me, and it also lists the hops: Mosaic, Centennial, Calypso, Chinook, Citra, and Cascade. Let me think about it, am I finding all of those? Yes, definitely Mosaic, I wasn't sure where that berry note was coming from but now it's clear, and the pine is from the Chinook, the lemon and orange from the Citra, and I'm guessing the peach from the Calypso (I've only brewed with it once). So, overall, nicely done. The head has held up well, although it's now dropped to a collar, and there's some decent lacing left behind. I'm not sure how to rate it on haze but I'm going to guess it's OK. I wish I had another one!

Poured into small chalice: color is murky copper, quite dense looking and opaque, head is 1 finger thick and off white in color with fine to small bubbles.

Smell is limited and took some agitation to exude some aroma - light toasty malt, hint of caramel sweetness, then hop notes of lemon rind, sweet fruit and light pine. Nothing distinctive and a bit muddled.

Taste follows with bit more nuanced flavor than aroma depth - malt is forward but flavor is mix of light toasty malt and sweeter caramel like malt, hops follow with lemon rind, neutral sweet fruitiness, and light pine and earth. Again, a bit muddled but not bad. Beer alludes to this being a hop experiment and it appears that it tastes and smells that way, could be more focused or have less malt sweetness if hops were to shine a bit more.

Mouthfeel is lower carbonation, moderate bitterness, lighter sweetness.

Overall, this beer tastes like the experiment its described as on the can - needs a bit more focus to make the malt or hop presence shine.
