On tap (nitro) and poured into a shaker pint glass.

L---As black as the nuns used to say my soul was. Nice, off-white head with good retention and a little bit of lacing.

S---Roasty malts. A bit of cocoa.

T---More of the roasted malts than the cocoa. A touch bitter, but not in a bad way at all.

F---Thinner than expected. Coating.

O---A really nice Irish stout. Not in Guinness' league, but nothing else really is, either.

Pitch black pour with no lacing. Appearance is thin.

Aroma is light chocolate and smoke with very delicate char.

Taste is chocolate, light char and smoke with some lingering delicate chocolate and char.

Body is ultra thin.

A lot of flavor for a sub 4% stout but don't care for the mouthfeel, way too thin.

I tried this on nitro at The Standard Tap in Philadelphia. It poured an opaque dark with thin tan head which dissipated over time and did not leave any lace. The scent had hints of earth and roast. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with smooth carbonation. Overall its a decent beer.

Let me just start by saying this was the best *looking* beer I've ever tasted. For me, dry stouts are hit and miss, and this was definitely a hit. This was a NITRO pour at E. W. Beck's in Sykesville (MD) and it hit the glass looking as black and opaque as any beer I've seen. The nitro pour left a perfect 1/2 inch tan line of foam above it. No bubbles visible in the darkness. Seriously black. The smell was a hint of malt and smoke, but in my opinion, the flavor was stupendous. Dry, not sweet--well, perhaps a hint of sweetness, but easily balanced by the bitterness, with a soft carbonation underneath to pull it all together. It left a perfect bitter dryness in the mouth and this flavor profile, coupled with the reasonable ABV numbers, made this beer very easy to drink. I would make a trip back to Beck's just to have another. It was that good.
