My first-ever sample from Sly Fox Brewing Co. - a brewery that I have heard a lot of good things about, although I wasn't particularly blown away by their Quadrupel offering... Copped a 750 Ml bottle caged and corked from Gary's in Madison with the phrase "Abbey Style Quadrupel" on the dark-blue label... Pours a jet-black, opaque color with no head at all and minimal lacing... appearance certainly was average at best with some carbonation present... Smell was full of dehydrated dark-fruits, with a slight alcohol presence... taste was very malty, although not at all thick, more of a watery, dark cocoa flavor with brown candy sugars, phenols, and alcohol... Mouthfeel was light, not rich or thick as I was anticipating, somewhat bland... surprisingly, the 10% ABV isn't too apparent, and the sugar-laden, sweet, roasted malt flavor permeates the brew... an unusually darker version than most Quads I've sampled... a decent stab at the style, but certainly not the best I've come across...

A - Murky brownish orange, light near white head. Not much lace.

S - I get mostly Belgian yeast and not much more. A little juicy fruit and spice.

T - Lush fruit and malt, not quite quelled by hops.

M - Medium body, good carb, faults to the sweet.

D - Nice beer. High ABV and sweet nature not so sessionable.

Mahogany red-brown, but dark. Maybe chestnut. Looks rich. Has very little clarity. Mucky. Enough light passes through the narrow end of the goblet to show some sunken specks of yeast cake.

Distinctly emphasized by prune, black cherry, raisin, and browned pear. Clove-like phenols are pertinent. Has a mild kriek-like tartness. I wouldn't call it sour, but it's certainly a positive, thus far. Backing malts have that brown bread unctuousness. Light nuttiness, overpowered by a whole basket of dark fruits. Hints of red apple and grape. Very ripe for a quad. The booze note is actually pretty tame, and I don't know the actual levels yet, as the bottle label doesn't reveal the ABV%.

Pleasing tartness. It's very subtle, but it makes the whole experience refreshing and all the more approachable. Dark fruits stacked on top of one another. Prune, red grape, tart cherry, pomme fruits, raisin, and blackberry (maybe even pomegranate). Clove-y elements that are legit, not just the taste of something medicinal (except that there is something reminiscent of Ricola cough drops). Perhaps, I am getting a hint of eucalyptus. Somewhat vinous (port notes), a descriptor that I could have used for the nose, as well. Big bouts of maltiness and yeast, playing out like a true Belgian strong ale. Fusel alcohol has that floral note. Exceptional sweetness, but not too far gone. Rather addicting in the way that it's so delicious. Fruity, with a tobacco note that builds from the middle on. Finishes sweet and clove-y. Alcohol is so subdued, I can't wait to see where this one is at.

Feels nice and full and soppy (one of my favorite words to use). Carbonation is perfectly mild with that wee-bit crackle and pop in the back folds of the mouth. Still uses the body to drive the feel. Alcohol has a light spicy bite in the finish. So good.

I'm wondering how long this bottle has sat on the shelf. Amazing complexities built up here. On the sweet side, but hardly atrocious; done the right way! It just happens to have some leftover residual sugars. Wicked good. However, I might open an Abt 12 next...

The beer poured into the chalice clear dark brown with zilch for head, nada, none.

The aroma was fruity with a strong dark fruit impression of raisins and prunes. Chocolate also was present with a dark caramel character. No head and a somewhat low carbonation made the aromas more subdued.

The flavor was fruity with a cinnamon spice and a light peppery character. The flavor was somewhat sweet with a dark caramel and chocolate presence and a strong dark fruit character. The dark fruits, mainly prunes with some raisins, well represented.

The finish was lightly sweet but heading toward dry with a lasting dark fruit and dark caramel presence and chocolate fairly long and lingering into the aftertaste. The body was medium full and the carbonation was mostly nonexistent leaving a fairly still beer. The warming after consumption was very, very high and almost burning which made the beer just a bit difficult to consume. This one would be much better if properly carbonated for the style.

Aroma of sweet fruit, weakens but lasts entire bottle
Head enormous (eight cm, slow pour), very light tan, frothy, slooowy diminishing to very irregular frothy ring and heaped frothy Island
Lacing patchy at best – some small to medium islands of tiny to medium bubbles and some ring drag
Body dark amber, clear - lot of sediment in bottom but a careful decantation fixes that
Flavor starts very sweet, tasting of brown sugar, then morphs into dates and figs; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate full, syrupy, soft carbonation

Appearance 4.5, Aroma 4, Flavor 4, Palate 4, Overall 4

This was one of my first quads 'way back when. Revisiting it now that I know what a quad actually is, I found it surprisingly good.

After a tiring struggle with the cork, which would not budge no matter what force I applied to it, the thing finally gave way with a very wimpy "pop." Not "pop!!!" but "pop." Nice and polite. Kinda worries me.

Looks healthy enough on the pour, with a thick foamy head that snaps and crackles down to half-size slowly, sitting on top of an absolutely gorgeous dark rusty/ruby-shaded brown. The regal reddish hue turns this into quite the beautiful beer.

Aroma is clearly quite Belgian in character, especially in the yeast department, but the malts also give off a vinous quality that reminds of the best Belgian quads. Lots of grape, obviously, but also other mild fruits, mingling with the yeast in a most pleasing way. Not terribly complex, but quite nice all the same.

Here's one where taste and mouthfeel work significantly hand-in-hand. Flavor-wise this is grape-y, with a strong alcohol warmth that nobody could call "well-hidden", but with the velvet-smooth texture, the mildly funky yeast and the sweet dark fruit, it becomes more like a robust red wine or a sherry: a sweet concoction made exclusively for sipping. A beer that takes on new dimensions and certainly defies many people's idea of what beer is and can be. It doesn't hit you over the head, just pushes the limits in a different way than other big beers.

Tasty, soothing, rich, sweet, well-made and different. You better like grapes and red wine if you're gonna tackle this. The closest comparison I can make is Westvleteren 12, another vinous quad of fine quality. Not only in terms of flavor, but it looks similar, smells similar and has that same dry, sticky finish. I won't hold out for the opportunity to try them side by side, and I'm not saying it's "as good as", cuz it's not, but if you're jonesing for a Westy 12 and can't locate one, join the club and go for this instead.

a: Clear dark chestnut; pours with a thick fizzy head.

s: Lots of cherries, some kind of artificial sweetner, and flowery booze. Not very Quad like.

t: Very sweet overall but not all that malty. Raisins and cherries are there but kind of syrupy. That artificial from the smell is here too. Lots of sugar but lacks any Belgian yeat character.

m: Gentle fizzy carbonation and a syrupy body.

o: Too sweet and pretty far off-style.

Welcome to DC, Sly Fox!

Served in a "Game of Thrones" glass.

A: Poured a dark, dark, brown with a slight bit of translucence, possibly only detected by some serious astronomical tools.

S: PEZ dust, with figs, plums, and various dark fruit. Somewhat understated, yet still present.

T: Kinda strong on the sugar and Belgian yeast front. Totally overwhelming. The fruit was there, along with a bucket of brown sugar.

M: Decent carbonation bill, but this stuff is boozy as hell. Seriously, It's hard to take a gulp of it.

O: This one was fairly cheap, at only $8.99. If you're looking for some cheap social lubricant, go ahead. However, I'll pass on this in the future.

750ml bottle at 52 degrees.

Pours dark mahogany with a ruby hue when held to the light. Mostly clear in the body with a few fine particulates in suspension.
Barely a half-inch head developed and quickly dissapated to a placid surface with zero lacework.

Aromatics lead off with ripe malt, grape jam, rum-soaked raisins, cloves, and cotton candy.
Hints of cocoa, hard candies, and juicy fruits follow through.

Medium bodied with a sticky, tacky mouthfeel. A bit flatish and limp.

Red grapes, marmalade, dark rum, and plump malt start the palate. Hints of sweet apples, bubblegum, Jolly Ranchers, and cane sugar follow through.

Finishes with a building warmth, lingering sweetness, and chewy grape jam.

The nose is pretty deluxe on this one, but the low carbonation and high level of residuals detracts. Dry it up and increase the carbonation and this one would be a homerun.

750ml bottle, corked and caged. sampled jan 2/08.

really had to fight to pull the cork from this one, eventually resorting to a corkscrew. pours crystal clear red-brown with no trace of carbonation or head. beautiful ruby and garnet colours when held to the light.

aroma is nice. my first thought upon pulling the cork was merlot, but i got that less when it hit the glass. alcohol. hints of dark fruit - date ,fig, bit of raisin. white bread. toffee and caramel. dark chocolate. bit of vanilla.

taste is great. alcohol, slightly warming on the way down. nice dark fruit again, a little bigger in the flavour than the aroma. date, fig, raisin. white bread. dark chocolate. toffee and caramel. low bitterness level. bit of dried cranberry. bit of hazelnut. just a touch of yeasty spice. hint of sweetness, more as fruit/chocolate/caramel than raw sugar. even better as it warmed.

mouthfeel is good. medium body. just a hint of carbonation, not enough to really do it justice. it holds up very well, but i think it would really come alive with even a little carbonation.

drinkability is good. the lack of carbonation makes it come across more wine or port-like. great fruity and malty base balanced against the alcohol. holds up very well, even with the low carbonation. i had no trouble finishing off the full 750 by myself - until it was time to stand up!

A: Pours a very dark brown, in the glass it is a ruby red color against the light. Not a lot of head, but what is there is white.

S: Raisons, brown sugar, burnt caramel. Some strawberries in there as well. Slightly yesaty.. Definitely Sweet.

T: Now that is delicious. Raisons, caramel, fruit, and brown sugar. Definitely sweet, slightly yeasty, and a little booze.

M: Highly carbonated especially for something that has a bit of a syrup taste to it. Very nice.

D: Very good. A sweet treat that I would seek out again. Perhaps not as yeasty as I would expect from a belgian style, but all in all very good. Now I am going to grab some aged gouda from the fridge, cause it is going to be awesome with this.

Sensational brew. I’m not going to say this is on par with Westvleteren or Rochefort, but this is definately one of the better American examples I’ve tried. A little confused by it low score, perhaps it’s a newer, more improved batch. Yum, this is a great beer. The mouthfeel could definately be a bit creamier and more heavy and I wish the finish was a little more lasting, BUT this is still a great brew, worth seeking out.

I love the look of the Sly Fox pull corks, but damn if I didn't need a cockscrew to actually get it out of the bottle.

Pour initially looks black, then later purple as the beer goes down, but I'll say it is actually an extremely dark red, appropriate enough for "blood of the gods". Small off-white head quickly disipates into a collar at the glass and an oil slick on the surface.

Nose is full of dark fruits with a touch of candy. A very enjoyable sniff, full of promise.

Taste is all about the dark - plums and raisins and prunes and red grapes plus a slight undercurrent of apple. If dark was a taste, besides chocolate, this might be it. So fruity its a cosmic smoothie. Warming alcohol after the swallow.

Wonderfull full mouthfeel. Extremely low carbonation, it all seems it exit on the pour with a snake-like hiss.

Yes this is another beer that dear old "dangerously drinkable" applies to.

A wonderful nightcaper of a beer from Brian O'Reilly and the folks at Sly Fox. Seek it and savor it.

Not a lot of carbonation upon opening. Deep chestnut and mahogany color. Ok sized head on top. Very nice caramel and treacle like aroma. Deep raisen smell. Big malty flavor up front. Again, very raisen like flavor going on. Sugars give it a pleasant and complex sweetness. Mild port wine flavor in finish. Good body-the sweetness quietly fades to a pleasant dryness. No sense of the 10% abv. Very drinkable beer-almost dangerously so. Best Sly Fox beer I have had.
