2015 Adventure pack (bottled OCT-15)
Source: Sam's Club (warm)
Served in pub pint glass

---
Label: Session Black Wheat IPA
Pours a rich brown ... fat fast fading head and moderate lacing.
Strong aroma ... a delicious blend of dark malt and pungent hops (tropical and pine).
Light body ... dark malt lurks in the background ... clean finish ... hop-forward sans pucker.
Tasty ... low ABV makes it eminently sessionable.

A: Black in the glass, with a small amount of head that rapidly recedes.

S: Grapefruit, and a lot of citrus peel.

T: Hoppy, with a nice amount of hops coming across as grapefruit peel, and perhaps a touch of earthiness, a touch of coffee in the finish.

M: Medium in body, aggressive carbonation, and a bit of a bitter cling in the finish.

O: Overall a pretty tasty brew, packed with flavor, and low enough gravity to drink a few of em.

On tap at the venue during the rained out first day of Lockn'. Not as spicy as I had hoped, but very drinkable. Staff was all business, so we went back to the Blue Mountain Barrel House.

Now don't freak out, but I could best describe this as having the malty/roasty bitterness and body of DB's Schwartz Bier with the grapefruity hop punch of Lagunitas' A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale.
Oh, calm down!

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a glass.
Look: Deep cola color, nearly black. Lingering head and lacing.
Smell: Floral, a little grapefruity.
Taste: Initial grapefruity, floral, piney hop burst that settles down into a low bitterness. That's when the malty/roasted bitterness comes in, and it's hard to tell where the bitterness is coming from. But there it is on the back of the tongue... and for a while.
Mouthfeel: Light, with noticeable carbonation.
Overall: I'm not an IPA head, so a bit hoppy for me, but far from a hop bomb. An enjoyable, style-worthy brew nonetheless.

I got this one in a Devil's Backbone sampler twelve pack that included Spider Bite, Schwartz Bier, and Stringduster. All of those beers including this one are scarcely reviewed so I intend to review each one.

Look: Deep dark ebony with thin and clear chestnut brown edges in the light. The head was luscious and frothy, light tan in color, and leaves loose lacing.

Smell: It has a strong aroma of coffee and pine with undertones of brown sugar, black pepper, tobacco, and grass.

Taste: Toasted malt, coffee, and dark chocolate with a solid backing of classic piney hop bitterness. It has robust flavors but still has balance. It is like a stout and an IPA, but it is primarily malted with wheat and is of "session" strength so it is very unique.

Feel: The body is on the heavy side of light, but not medium. It is somehow crisp and smooth upfront but with a quick semi-dry finish that has a charcoal linger. Very drinkable but it makes you want to enjoy it slowly. It opens up as it warms.

Overall: This is a very unique beer. I have had wheat beers, session IPAs, and black IPAs but never all those combined. It is persistently surprising and surprisingly delicious. Very good quality and also a member of their "Rare Series" so I'm glad I got to try it.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a deep, dark, brown coloring with a low profile, clingy, foamy, off-white head. Aromas of toasted grains forward, with a resinous follow of pine and dankness. The nose has a coffee-like backbone, too. Pretty dynamic. Flavors are bitter roasted forward, with hints of char, followed immediately by piney and resinous hops notes, vegetal and bitter. The beer is light bodied and smooth, with a bitter aftertaste from both hops profiles and roasted characteristics. Notes of coffee, pine, grass, and subtle citrus notes. The finish is smooth and light, with the bitter roasted notes lingering through. Interesting brew.

Look - dark brown color, dense one finger head that lasts a while, leaving lacing
Smell - Strong hoppy, grassy scent
Taste - Immediate and intense hops bitterness. Tastes very green - grass, pine needles
Feel - high carbonation, medium mouthfeel
Overall - It looks good but the taste is overwhelmingly bitter to me.

Black as a Porter. Very smooth with dry finish with a subtle, almost sweet hoppy bite at the end. Devils Backbone never disappoints.

This is a difficult one for me. It had a nice hop aroma and looked beautiful. For some reason the hop taste I got did not mix well with the dark malts. I usually like black IPA's. This one did not do it for me as well as others

When they call it a black ale, it is definitely black. There is no light getting through it unless you look at it from the top to the bottom. The head is a very light tan, with some retention. The aroma is strongly IPA, with big pine dominating. The taste is much the same, with just a little bit of dark malts coming through at the finish. The body is a little lighter with carbonation throughout but has a nice hops bite to it.
