-Belgian inspired ipa served in a spiegelau vessel.

A: Bright orange coloring, with a good clarity, has a soft, and slow rise of effervesce, medium density. A solid, foamy capping is firm in its stance, lacing is minimal.

S: Sweet and spicy hops combine with a small Belgian yeast funk. Some wet lemons, finished off by some funky, green melon fruit. Light to medium range intensity, quickly dissolving stamina.

T: Musky flowery hops, touch of tart lemon and toasted grain for flavor. Muksy citrus, dry catty flowery hops, with the biggest moment arriving shortly after the swallow. Better late then never. Nice toasted malting, belgian influence is soft, yeastiness is restrained, some musky nature.

M: Body seemed a bit thin at the start, water, with a carbonation factor that really doesn't come through or add texture or life. Frothy and washy feel. One of the low points of this drink.

O: Aptly named with some musky and catty flavors, offers only a small introduction into the world of Belgian ipa and hardly stands among the most notable. Biggest sense of hop flavors come on the dry finish of the swallow. Mouthful I felt was a weak point lacking body and crispness.

Poured from a bottle into a glass.

Clear and golden. Citrus and grassy hop aroma. Nice hop bitterness that is significantly lower and more palatable than a typical IPA. Some fruity notes. A malty finish. Slightly sticky.

Devils Backbone Brewing Co. "Catty Wompus"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BONED 08:54 03.15.17 85"
$2.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Interesting label. Catty Wompus? I guess that makes sense as a Belgian-style IPA is kind of skewed. Brewed in Lexington... not sure what the difference between locations is. Maybe that's their production facility. OK, let's see.. almost fingerprint-through-the-glass clarity in its golden body. Creamy bright white head. The aroma is chalky and malty with just a bit of fruit (banana, orange, plum, apple). The flavor brings in more pine, earth, herbs, and spice (black pepper, clove, something else) as well as a bit of pear, white grape, "citrus", and peach. It's not as bold or direct as I might be making it out to be, but those flavors are all there. The malt is fairly basic, perhaps a bit honeyish, bready & toasty - a bit biscuity. It's nicely balanced, not too bitter, nor too hoppy to the point that it overrides the Belgian yeast character - surprisingly nice in that's it's somewhat restrained; it allows for its full complexity to come through. Looking back, both the head retention and lacing could have been better. Medium bodied with a fine-bubbled, gently crisp carbonation. Some peppery spiciness lingers in the dry finish. Surprisingly drinkable, and possibly a little bit dangerous at 7.5% ABV ~ I'll probably want to have another but that would be a bad move. Two thumbs up!

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a speiglau IPA glass.

Look is a light golden with a thin head.

Aroma is light Belgian esters.

Taste is more Belgian pale ale than IPA and the alcohol disappears between light malt.

Smells and tastes like old canned peaches. Not very hoppy or yeasty, just a cloyingly blah peach flavor and then a half assed bitter hop kick. Not a kick. More of a mild tap. You know the hops are there, but there are not enough of them for you to care. It is neither a good Belgian nor a good ipa. Even the color is somewhat dissapointing, looking more like muscadine wine then a beer. I was really excited to try this after reading reviews on here, but have since concluded that everyone just copied the flavor profile written by the company and pretended to like it. Most dissapointing beer I've had in awhile, and last week I accidentally drank a natty boh at a smelly college bar because my brother in law takes me to dumb places.

Being new to the whole beer review thing I'm not sure what I can add that hasn't already been said. I'm a fan of Belgian IPAs and this one certainly is one of the better ones I've had. Medium to light golden with hints of citrus or banana in smell that lingers in the taste. Crisp and smooth. Very refreshing.
