Collaboration with Sun King Brewery. Double Dank Cream Ale. Pale in color and loaded with Simcoe and Columbus hops, this beer is an unlikely marriage of a cream ale and a double IPA.

12iz bottle poured into a tulip

A- bright clear golden, nice frothy white head that retains nicely

S- toasted grains, floral/grassy/spicy hops, light vanilla, toasted bread

T- sugary sweet up front with some herbal/grassy hops, vanilla cream mid-palate, granulated sugar on the finish, reminds me of the dipping stick from a pack of fun dip

M- medium body and carbonation, creamy mouthfeel and a silky finish, high drinkability

O- a nice change up to a typical simple/mundane style

This beer was a revelation. Cream ale is a hot day beer for me. Beyond that, I never touch the stuff. So I wasn't expecting much from this. Wow was I pleasantly surprised. It's light colored and crystal clear, just like a traditional Cream Ale, but with so much more flavor and alcoholic zip. Very tasty. Too bad it's a limited release collaboration because I would drink this year round.

Pours clear, a medium light gold, with a thin smear of white head. It still manages to leave smaller amounts of sticky lacing. The aroma is lighter but has some citrus and pine. The taste is much the same. The body is lighter, steadily carbonated, with a slightly crisp finish.

To me it was an attempt to blend two styles that just missed the mark.

A dank cream ale that combines the hop forward flavor of an IPA with the smooth clarity of a cream ale. A great idea that pays off in a very drinkable, flavorful beer that takes the best of both styles.

Looks just the way a cream ale ought to look - crystal clear and pale, dull gold.

Smell is just great - dank and resinous. It's like breathing in a hop vineyard. Pine trees, hints of grapefruit peel, mild malty backbone.

The taste is totally there too - mildly sweet on the front end, but it quickly gives way to floral, grassy, piney hops. They set out to make a hoppy cream ale and they nailed it. The finish is bitter, but not too much so, and it hangs out gently on the tongue with a thick, oily, creamy texture long after the head has faded.

Also, goes really well with the tortilla chips I'm eating now.

Although called a cream ale, I kept thinking IPA. It's said to be a blend of the two styles, which I get intellectually, but drinking it, I kept experiencing it as an IPA. Color is basically straw to a bit darker. Minimal pale head. The nose was hoppy and a bit fruity; it made me anticipate IPA flavors, and that's a lot of what I got on tasting it. There is a "cream" aspect which is not found in every typical IPA... but the IPA impact is mainly what I got from this one. The floral and somewhat fruity nose was probably the highlight for me here. An almost sudsy mouthfeel emerges after a moment. There's a bit of aftertaste that's not to my taste but might be fine for IPA enthusiasts.

My bottle was bottled ("boned") on 21 Jan 2016, consumed on 7 Apr 2016.

someone boned this beer on 12/10/15.

A: slight haze on a straw, blonde hue. some bubbles form a small white head. not much to it lacing or retention wise.

S: smells sticky. dank even.... piney, citrus, woody, and some earthiness. in conclusion, really hoppy aroma but not like your usual citrus bombs this days. inviting.

T: flavor starts off all hops. woody for sure. some green tea hop flavor. some mild grain bite towards the finish, nicely balanced. bitter finish. resinous and lingering.

M: moderate body with moderate carb. standard.

D: pretty good brew, definitely rich in hop character. not getting a ton of Cream Ale qualities as this is mostly hoppy, but there is some semblance of malt and hop balance so I am not going to argue with it.

3.47/5: A nice combination of old-school hoppiness and well restrained adjuncts make this a decent beer

This one is another collaboration brew by Devil’s Backbone and Sun King Breweries. This beer has 6.8% ABV and 68 IBUs. It is a Double Dank Cream Ale style.

Look-It pours a brilliant and very light yellow golden color. The head although fleeting is very white and foamy and silky. The lacing is drooping and wet.

Smell-It smells grainy, like corn and wheat, as well as grassy and piney.

Taste-It starts out with a blast of carbonation and then I get a wave of floral components like lilac, clover, and dandelion. I then get some mild bitters from the hops and some grassy/earthy hops and some very mild citrus like clementine and tangerine. It has a medium-body at most and significant carbonation.

Overall-This is a very refreshing beer. It is crisp, moist, and refreshing as well as unique and versatile.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.

Pale golden in color, perfect clarity with some bubbles. Thin lacing but it stays. Big hop nose, same on the palate. Catty and grapefruit rind, more hops than anything else here but that must have been the point. Perfect crispness, very easy to drink. Estery with some dry graininess in the back. Lots of fun to drink and I most certainly received my hop fix with this one.
