Notes: The thing about bucks is, they’re big, strong, and they make their presence felt. That notion sorta inspired us to brew Eight Point IPA, the first beer we ever brewed at Devils Backbone. It’s got a nice hoppy presence but is approachable. It’s gold, medium-bodied, and made with four malts, plus brash American hop varieties like Simcoe, Centennial, Comet, Amarillo, and Citrus.

We don’t have any proof that a buck would like it, but we’re pretty sure they’d respect it.

Malts: Pilsner, Vienna, CaraStan, Torrified Wheat, Black Malt, Dextrose
Hops: Simcoe, Centennial, Comet, Amarillo, Citra

I live in VA. Have had their lager multiple times. Awful. Had the IPA on tap few months ago and thought it was pretty good. Decided to give these folks another chance and bought a 12pc on sale. Drinkable but not great. Pine, resinous aftertaste. Weird. Still can't figure how this brewery does so well. Then again I don't know why there is an Applebee's in every town either....

From the bottle this was not my favorite IPA. The smell and initial flavor is pretty thick and malty but also very bitter, hops were present but were a bit hidden in the flavor of this beer. To me it had no standout flavor, but I know plenty of people that like it and will give it a second try at some point.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A real gorgeous truly crystal clear body of orange and bronze pale amber with slow rising tiny carbonation, and no cola bubbles sticking to the sides of the glass. Three finger deep off white head, totally uniform with pin head size, huge retention and not going anywhere. This beer is nearly perfect. Heck I'd score it 5 if I was in the right mood.

Nose is a soft toasty sweet malt, with mild hop pine. Incredibly toasty sugar action on this, giving a very malt toast presence with a simple hop if subdued hop presence.

Taste seems turned down. Even the malt action on this seems subdued from the nose, but it's still a nice toast aroma of sweetend toasty burnt brown sugar. Hop angle comes towards finish with a tiny pine action. Mouthfeel is simple and really subtle but strangely doesn't add much to the brews taste.

Overall it's a good tasting beer, but not a hop seekers IPA. It gives me the impression this brewery is about malt than hops, I would like to really try their Vienna Lager after this having had Gold Leaf.

This beer is a very pale amber with a foamy white head.

The smell is piney, dampness and cat piss. Sounds terrible but it's not bad.

The taste is piney, sweet citrus and bitter. Really coats your tongue with hops and lasts in your mouth a while.

The body is medium with medium carbonation.

Overall a pretty good ipa, I enjoyed this, was a little different.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a small Troegs Mad Elf snifter. Was a recent extra in a trade and could not find a freshness date.

A: Just a slight tinge of orange of what would be otherwise straw colored.

S: Literally no nose at all, maybe a slight hop freshness if I really buried myself in it.

T: Slightly hoppy with a bit of a cheap perfume taste.

M: Fine for the style.

O: Not real good, not offensive but certainly nothing I would buy myself.

It is a clear golden color with a full white head. It has citrus aromas. It has flavors of citrus, pine, and floral notes. It is moderately bitter on the palate.

12oz bottle poured into my Terrapin glass. It poured golden amber in color with two full inches of frothy head covering the top. Very good lacing on the glass as I drank it.

The aroma seems to have a pretty nice range variety of hop flavors to it. Earthy, herbal hop flavors come together with some juicy, citrusy ones. I get a little grapefruit, pine and orange to it. Moderately bready with a little caramel sweetness to it. Pretty good aroma overall.

The taste shows a little more of the caramel flavors, giving it a bit of a candied orange like flavor when it mixes with the hoppiness. Pine, grapefruit and a bit of a herbal quality all come out in the hoppiness. It's definitely got a pretty noticeable, but good malty base to it as well. Some bitter citrus rind lingers into the finish.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being moderate. Overall it's a pretty good tasting and easy drinking beer, but it just doesn't really stand out in the style for me. I have really enjoyed a lot of DB's beers on my trips down to the brewpub, this one though I just don't think stands out among it's direct 6 pack IPA competitors in this market.
