Everything about this beer is good and within "style" for the most part. Nice color, smell, mouthfeel (mostly), etc. Taste, however, is a different story. Not a whole lot of malt character, nor any presence of late hops, American or otherwise. Only a harsh bitterness, much of which tastes like it comes from improper mashing/sparging. Once again, a
disappointing beer from the "award winning" Devil's Backbone.

Good for a local brew - sold cheap in MD stores.

Light golden pour with white head. Lemon grassy hop aroma. Taste: plenty of citrus bitter, sweet honey malt. Piney finish.

Third and last bottle from the variety pack; bottling date is March 6th, 2015.

Pours a light golden/yellow color, much nicer gold once it's in the glass. Very clear, with lots of little bubbles rising up and a pretty significant head of fluffy just-barely-off-white foam, which gradually shrinks away into a coating on top and a ring around the edges of the glass, which hangs around for quite a while. Looks pretty nice!

Smell is not especially strong (especially as IPAs go) -- it's a bit faint actually. But what is there is definitely leaning more toward the hoppy side, a bit of a leafy and piney sort of thing.

Taste is similar to the smell, but noticeably stronger. There's some piney hops, a bit of a grain/bready (maybe almost cracker-like?) malt flavor, and a noticeable bit of leafy/bordering-on-spicy hop flavor and bitterness on the end. A bit of a fruity sort of flavor as well, coming out more in burps than when drinking, though it's present when drinking too (just definitely takes a backseat to the piney/leafy/bitter aspects.) Could be better, but what's there is not bad at all.

Mouthfeel is very nice. Possibly the most repeat-drinkable IPA I've tried so far, including some "session" IPAs -- the first time I had this beer I went ahead and had two, actually, which is a bit of a change for me since with IPAs I usually stop at just one! I'm having a hard time describing exactly what's so nice here, but I'm definitely liking it -- it's lighter than a lot of other IPAs but at the same time doesn't feel watery at all, with a bit of a pleasant fizziness, and nothing about it comes across as harsh even if I take a bigger gulp than usual. Mouthfeel is probably my favorite feature of this beer.

Overall, pretty good -- taste and especially smell could be improved upon (the smell is definitely the weakest feature, just doesn't smell as noticeably "hoppy" as I'd expect an IPA to) but what's there isn't bad... the look is nice, and the mouthfeel might just be my favorite of an IPA so far. It's a bit different from other IPAs in that area, I suppose the lower ABV (a lot seem to be 6-7% with some reaching even higher, while this one is 5.9%) might have something to do with that. And it's ridiculously easy to find in this area, both bottled and on tap, and usually for a decent price -- so I'll most likely end up having many more of them in the future!

The beer has a nice appearance. The head has a nice look with white small bubbles covering the surface as it clings to the glass. The beer itself is a clear medium gold.

The beers smell is a bit simple and very hoppy with very little malt sweetness. The hop is kinda of a musty, floral, and earthy hop. The malt also comes out as a bread note.

The taste is the same as the smell. The hop is a floral and musty note but the malt is a bit sweeter. There also apparently is a metallic note in the aftertaste from the water, which isn't bad.

The mouthfeel is a bit light for the beer type. While the feel is smooth, the beer has a slightly watery feel to it. However, it is still a bit refreshing.

Overall, a decent IPA and worth getting. The overall experience is nice at a very good price with excellent availability in Virginia.
