Review from BeerAdvocate magazine issue #109 (FEB 2016)

Robust, Molasses, Roasty, Clean
Devil’s Backbone stays true to style and brews this hefty porter with a lager yeast. Roastiness ranges from mild charcoal to espresso, dark chocolate to burnt toast. Warming but very clean. A lot more character than anticipated and that’s saying something coming from a style that calls for a big flavor profile. Smooth and drinkable even for a big, semi-brash, dark brew. [Jason]

20oz stout glass. Pours heavy brown oil-like.. with little lacing, and a head that dies very quick to nothing at all.
Smells lightly of chocolate, with a nice roasted coffee backbone. Tastes virtually the same, some sweetness..with a hint of some dry bite on the back end. MF was a little thick and creamy... not bad at all.

Overall, I liked this beer. It was pretty good, but didn't wow me. The alcohol did not present itself, which I rather appreciated. I would gladly have another.

Pours dark, black, opaque with no head at all. Faintly sweet, malty, bready aroma. Tastes malty, with chocolate & coffee flavors, and slightly charred or burnt notes. These are bold flavors. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy, smooth, a little fizzy. Overall a tasty, strong beer. I have had several Devils Backbone beers, and have enjoyed them all. This is another good one.

Bottled on 12/15/15.Poured one and a half bottles into a half liter stein a deep dark chocolate brown with a full one finger deep beige head atop.Char and alcohol soaked dark fruit in the nose, some mild smoke/wood is detected as well. The feel is just slightly thin in the back end wich takes a little richness away from the palate.Nice flavors of caramel and roast mixed with dark fruit and hint of molasses, some coffee lingers in the finish. To me this is real close to being world class, just that light feel takes away from a fantastic beer...in my opinion.

Pours clear, dark brown in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is raisin,, fig, smokiness, and toasted malt. Tastes like a quad/baltic porter mix. Medium heavy bodied and sweet. Interesting beer. Could do a couple.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass.

Minimal head just covers the top of the opaque body and quickly reduces to a thin edge.

Very nice aroma with hints of chocolate, coffee and dark roasted grains. Flavor follows. Very good balance. Well hidden alcohol.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a pretty, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a half of a finger of chocolate/caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a few wispy clouds of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic, with lots of earthy aromas. Roasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked dark bread, dark chocolate, dark molasses, caramel, a touch of licorice, a touch of smoke and lots of brown sugar. Very nice!

Taste: Delicious! Lots of roasted malt and brown sugar up front, imparting notes of freshly baked dark bread, dark molasses, cinnamon-sugar, a touch of butter, a touch of licorice, and finally, a touch of floral hops at the finish. Really, a delicious porter!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy and creamy, as there is no carbonation, what-so-ever. With an ABV of 8.0%, I’m surprised at how little alcohol is on the palate, like none.

Overall: This is a damn good Baltic Porter! Devils Backbone, my favorite Virginia Brewery, does it again! Another great beer! Recommended!

DATE: January 18, 2018... OCCASION: enjoying Will and Grace after a good day... GLASSWARE: Victory Hop Devil nonick... pours a midnight black body with a staunch, two-finger brown head that looks creamy and ... heavy peat bog starts the aroma, with toasted malts and earthy vegetable... nothing really stands out as catching... sips swiftly, easily and without debate--smooth and creamy.... a hardened finish leaves a brackish, thick, lingering mouthfeel.... wish this had more impact or texture, but it reads rather straight-forward and thin... light chocolate, large vegetable, some peat, and toasted malts... an apologetic Baltic, if there is such a thing... sweet, comforting as a winter companion, and definitely worth the $7.99 grunt price tag at Liquor Factory... still, the ABV is disguised well enough to encourage a rapid succession of sips... more than the sum of its parts, but not one that needs to be sought out...a nice picture of the style...

12oz bottle, red wine glass, bottles 11/18/17.

Super dark, black with no head after the first few moments.

So clearly lager yeast fermented this brew. Raisins, smoke, char, dark chocolate, tart cherry.

Oaked malt, dried cherries, charcoal, brown malt. It’s a smokey but thin charred, dark malt experience. Smokey dark caramel poured over a drift wood fire.

As I’ve mentioned, it’s thin. The aroma isn’t the only aspect that mimics lagers.

Porters are one of my favorite styles and whole Baltic Porter’s differ, this example is thin on not just body, but flavor and aroma.

This hits the style just right on the drinkable side. Smooth cocoa and caramel roll in, followed by a semi-bitter dark chocolate and a pop of black roast like an almost burnt cookie. It doesn't have the richness and thickness of the style leaders, but you can have another beer or two after a Danzig

Poured from the tap at the Distillery in Savannah, Georgia. The appearance is a clear midnight black color with a small tan colored head. The aroma is full on roasted malt. The taste matches the nose plus some molasses and licorice in the background.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown, almost black. Small khaki head. Thin collar.

Smell - Nutty malts. Roasted dark chocolate. Schwartzbier-like aroma.

Taste - Chocolate. Nutty malts. Bready malts. Hoppy and earthy finish. NIce.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Clean finish. Medium carbonation.

Overall - This suffered from being so late in the tasting, but it's a very clean and flavorful beer.

On tap @ the brewpub. Pours black with a thin mocha head. This mostly retains with some light ringing, leaving back just a smattering of lace down the sides. The aroma smells rich with chocolate, tangy toffee, roasted coffee, ripe citric hops and just a smidge of dark fruit. The taste is very similar to the nose, with a flavorful mix of chocolate, toffee, some light coffee, just a little dark fruit and a tingle of green citric hops down the middle. The feel is fuller with a lively and sharp feel on the tongue but then more of a smooth and creamy feel along the back. The alcohol is handled well. This ended up being a pretty smooth and flavorful take on a Baltic Porter with my only complaint being that it seemed to take forever for those rich flavors to finally emerge and take hold of my palate (not too surprising I guess considered it’s lagered). At any rate, this is an overall fine beer. Just let it breath for a while.
