Draft at Rustico Ballston. Served in a tulip. Pours near black with a short off-white head and a spot or two of lacing and a thin collar. Nose has some roasted malt plus a very light acidity. Flavor has some roast and dryness plus a touch of acidity in the background. Light and refreshing, though could have used a bit more acidity. I thought the roast/berliner ratio was a bit heavy toward the former, but otherwise this was a pretty enjoyable beer.

Had on tap at the brewery in a goblet beer glass. They serve it with flavored syrups, but this review is sans syrup. The color is dark brown like a light coffee, which is odd considering that this is Berliner Weisse style and Weisse means "white." The tan head settled quickly and didn't leave much lace.
The aroma is complex. There is a sweetness of plum and blackberry, but some funk that my wife and I think smells like bile. There is also a bready quality to the nose.
There is definitely some sour in the taste, but not as strong as most Berliner Weisse beers. The dark fruits come through mainly as a tart blackberry. A roasted quality comes end toward the end that is a little nutty. It presents quite a contrast from the mildly sour attack when you first taste the beer.
The mouthfeel is mellow, mild carbonation, and sweet-tart. The beer's low alcohol makes this fairly refreshing considering the color.

DB Black Berliner techno Weiss: Had this on tap at Devils Backbone on July 17th, 2012.
The beer pours a dark dark brown with a ring of tannish head. Not really any lacing. The smell has some nice barley notes and just the slightest flutter of a sour mash, Berliner style. Very big cereal presence in the aroma, some chocolate notes too, wish it had more tart bite.
The taste follows the smell and highlights dry chocolate chips and toast with a slight tartness at the end, like a citrus of some kind, crisp and pretty nice but more or less forgettable. I wish it was tarter (not really very tart just slightly). Some peanut overtones to the flavor as well or almond butter, sort of run of the mill.
The feel is light and bubbly, but still has nice body too especially for 3.4%.
Overall interesting, and a good idea but not a winner unless they could brew it with more of a tartness to it. I know the brewers are great, but I was expecting this to be better. I think it's a good idea to make a black berliner, I just think they should try and tweak this one a little.

From tap to tulip at Rustico Arlington on 6/8/12
*From notes
A: Dark violet in hue. A minimal head and a reasonably creamy top the beer.
S: Tart blackberry mash, light toast and a slight funk make for a unique nose.
M: Mild yet very tasty. There's a low key, easy going funk to the beer, but it's extremely soft and in no way intrusive. As it moves back, I get some roasted peanuts and and bit of vine fruit. It's quite easy to put back, and packs plenty of flavor for a low ABV brew.
M: Bubbly, yet it's also crisp and bold. The texture is just right, and the light to medium body aides in it's drinkability.
O: I've had quite a few Berliners, and though this isn't to the traditional style, I really love DB and Bluejacket's ingenuity with this. Certainly something different, and one I'd like to see again next summer. I can easily recommend this one.

Beer is sort of brownish black with a thin lazy head of small white bubbles, decent retention, no lacing, low carbonation.
Aroma is roasty, a little sweet, not much in the way of lactic acid.
Not a very sour Berliner in my opinion, there is a mild sourness, a mild roast, a little bit of a dry finish, not as effervescent as I was hoping, not as refreshing as I was hoping but not a bad beer for the ABV.

Collaboration with DC's Bluejacket. On tap at Rustico Ballston. Served in a tulip.
Pours a flat, dark and clear near black with a quickly fading light tan head. Head fades to a thin broken ring of bubbles and no lace. Strong roast and ashy nose blends with mild tart and lemon notes. Flavor is more yeasty and traditional Berliner in the front with a light lemon tartness before a thin watery finish. The roast flavor builds in the aftertaste and clashes with the fruit flavors. Light bodied with soft carbonation. At no point did I enjoy drinking this beer but I strongly considered ordering a second glass just because of the uniqueness of the beer so....
