THE place to go in town if you’re looking for those big/special/rare beers on-tap that you can’t find it bottles or don’t want to spend $20+ on just to try. When I was there they had all the BA Funky Buddha offerings, plenty of other vintages from around the country, like 2008 Bigfoot and a 2012 Southern Tier if I remember correctly.

Really cool inside. The bar and interior are something to see. Though kind of a dark space. Food was good. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries which was massive and overflowing. Most things on the menu sounded good. The 6oz pours are a tad small; I had Bourbon County BW. The server didn’t seem to know much about the beer. Just parroted things from the bartender. It was an early Thursday afternoon so it was quiet but I imagine it gets busy at night. A good location in Riverside, too.

Don't come here for the food. It's not bad...but inconsistent. Crazy big selection from peanut butter and jelly to steaks.
Outside patio is dog friendly and heated in the colder months. In a great spot with other place to eat and drink within a block or two, just in case you run out of choice for beer (ha, ha). Crazy number of beers on tap, and many others in bottle or can. You could come here every night and never catch them all. The place is just cool. One side is wall covered in pennies, and the other in beer taps and bottles. Wait staff varies from good to weird, and sometimes not the most engaged, but it will not keep me away. I don't go here often on my own, but it is a great place to take out-of -towners.

The decor is absolutely fascinating. Wonderfully enticing and mysterious bar.

Well over 100 taps, and an incredible list. More authentic German and Belgian taps than you will find at a specialty restaurant; American craft classics; rarities; aged options.

On my second visit, I went with a very high ABV pour: Prairie Bomb! Surprisingly, this came in a 6 oz pour. As this is one of my favorite beers, I went along with it. I was shocked when I got the check: $4.95. This beer hits my wallet to the tune of $10 per bottle at Total Wine; getting half the beer for half the price on tap? A very pleasant surprise (not that $5 for a 6 oz pour is cheap by any means). They could easily have gotten away with charging another $1-3 with very few complaints, given what I normally see Bomb! go for on tap and in stores.

Huge food menu, ambitious even; I wonder how they offer this kind of food selection while maintaining quality. Reading some of the older reviews, it seems that the answer is .... they don't. We'll see.

On two visits now, I have gone with a stuffed burger and fries, and a classic Cuban sandwich with fried onion petals. The Cuban was very good; the burger was excellent; the fries were quite poor; and the onion fries, while nothing special, were adequate.

Certainly, the food is nothing terrible; whatever this place used to offer, they're a step up from that. That said, from what I've sampled, it isn't great, either. Better than a dive bar, and more variety than normal pub fare. I may stick with the burgers from here on out.

One of the most impress overall tap lists I've ever seen, and when combined with the decor, just a phenomenal bar. I would live here if I could.

In town for a business trip, visited here on a Sunday night. The beer selection is insane, over 200 beers on tap. Some great stuff on tap, was surprised to find Morning Wood, Wide Awake It's Morning, and Last Buffalo in the Park on tap. Food menu is huge and it's just ok, but came here for the beer and wasn't disappointed. Live music made for a great vibe. Visited another place that is highly rated just around the corner and it was totally disappointing, wish we would have stayed at Kickbacks.

My first visit was this year and was very disappointed after all my buddies hyped the place up. I had heard that ownership changed hands and since it has gone down hill. They have a great tap selection and I hear bottle selection but would have no idea since there is no way to find out. Let me elaborate, the tap selection is on a menu but every time I asked for something on the menu the response was "oh we don't have that anymore." What in the heck is the point of the menu, they tout having 180+ on tap but they have no idea what they have on tap, the servers have no clue about beer, beer style, or what is there. There is no bottle list, if you go to the website they talk about this huge cellar they have in the basement, well they have no list of what is in there, the servers haven't the slightest clue of what is in there, nothing is posted on the website and the app is a waist of your phones memory and space. The app is useless has no menu, the only thing its good for is pulling up the phone number. I am all for being creative and dressing yourself is your prerogative, however I have no idea what ownership is thinking, the servers and hostess, looked filthy un-bathed, unsanitary, one look and your thought is there is no way I want this person serving me food. I hate to be so harsh and I normally don't write reviews but this place was such a huge disappointment. I hate to say that I would return only for a drink for some of those hard to get limited brews on tap if I hear by word of mouth that its on tap. When it came to the food I thought there were some fantastic dishes and some that were not so good but for the most part good food I just wont order again, for aforementioned reasons. I wish management would wake up, this place has so much potential.

Great beer, great food, and always a great time. If you are stopping by Jacksonville or are anywhere close, you need to stop by here and give it a try.

The food was incredible; the beer selection was very good and best of all the staff was very knowledgeable. Our waiter was nothing short of phenomenal in terms of his beer knowledge and desire to make our experience fantastic. I ha to knock down the food and selection categories as they were short on some of the food items we ordered.

Great atmosphere, cool vibe, lots of old tap handles... everywhere. While the quality of beer available was ok, the selection was not good at all. Being around the corner from some great Jax breweries and being able to pull in some CCB, they had ZERO FL beers on tap. How is that possible? The kicker, it was Jacksonville Craft Week. Maybe they didn't get the memo. I went down to World of Beer and had a Bold City Duke's Cold Nose and Cigar City Homemade Apple Pie. The bartender was a very nice guy though.

Place has gone down hill since last visit. Major renovation can't fix poor service. Un attentive bar tender. 100 plus beers on tap and you can't even sample one . Doubt I'm gonna buy a 6-7 dollar pint just not to like it. Pilsner served in wrong glass ....poor form for a place that wants to be known for its variety and quality of beers on draft.

I had been to kickbacks about 4 years ago and had a great experience. Previously the beer selection was vast and my server was knowledgable and helpful.

The second time around my experience was the complete opposite. They place felt dirty. The atmosphere was not good. The beer selection was abysmal. Instead of 60 some odd beers on tap it was more like 10-15 and not even good beers. I chose a Oskar blues Christmas ale my girlfriend had a bells IPA. My Christmas ale was the very bottom of the keg. It was flat and tasteless. Both beers were poured with WAY too much head. We ordered a burger and a panini sandwich to eat. The food came in time and tasted okay but as it cooled quickly the chicken in the panini became very dry. I tried to order a barley wine in a bottle. My waiter went to look, came back to the table and told me they were out. He didn't recommend any other beers or give me an alternative. He just walked off. A few minutes later he came back and I asked if they had ANY barley wines. Once again none. I tried one more time and asked for the Weyerhaeuser fifteen. This time they had the beer BUT it had not been in the cooler. I was told the beer could be ready in 8 min. Really?? How is a beer going to go from room temp to ready to drink in 8 min?

I politely said no thank you and asked for the check.

My impression is that this place is running in the negative and the owner/manager is putting no money into inventory.

I can't imagine this place staying in business. If they do they need to change their identity away from a high end craft beer restaurant and just be the local dive they have become.

Had dinner here while in town for work. They were under construction at the time of my visit, so their normally extensive tap list was down to about 21 or so...still very good. Terrapin WNB and Hopzilla, Hoppin Frog Boris Oatmeal, McChouffe, Bells Two Hearted, Souther Tier Oaked Backburner and Pumking?...Sixpoint Apollo, Orkney Skull Splitter, Schneider Sommer, Lost Coast Tangerine Wheat, Hoegaarden, and some others I don't remember. The bottle list was quite huge...they had a page of wilds and sours that looked god - and all reasonably priced. But on the 2 bottles I asked for, they were out of stock on maybe its not that big...
Also, you can download their App for a tap list.
The atmosphere is weird - a hodgepodge of random décor and furniture, tons of glassware and tap handles on the ceiling, all dusty and grimy, crumbs on the stained cushioned bar stools, and weird peeps loitering at the front door. It was fairly empty at 5:00 on a Monday.
Quality is a hard one - while the selection was very good, I did notice a the bartender taking a lot of simply rinsing dusty and dirty glasses from the bar top to quickly serve in instead of just cleaning all the glasses... (actually served a dirty glass to the person sitting next to me)...also , I hate when they use a second cup to collect the foam, then pour it into the beer you order to top just seems wrong - and there is likely some beer science on how that affects the flavor also.
The service was great - super nice bartender and food runners, chatty but not annoying and very attentive.
The food was pretty tasty. I had a tempeh burger; while it would probably not be many peoples first choice, it was pretty good for what it is - and I think it was "local" to Gainesville.
Prices were pretty good overall...about $5 on average for a draft during happy hour - while some others were closer to $9 like the BORIS Destroyer Oatmeal and the McChouffe.
Overall, while grimy and somewhat go back if im ever back in JAX...especially after their "expansion" is complete.

I stopped by here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon, early. The place was already starting to get filled up and by the time I left, it was half full. They are doing some remodelling or expansion so unfortunately, they only had like 10 or 15 drafts instead of the normal 60. The drafts they did have seemed to be pretty stellar. For some reason, they still had Pumpking? Others included Southern Tier and some others.

One complaint I do have is the bar area. When you first walk in, there is a bar directly in front of you. The problem with this bar is that the tap line or draft tower is directly at ey level and is about 1 foot in height. So, in order to converse with the bartender, one has to either stand up in ones stool or become the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Very annoying and something like that shouldnt happen at a nice bar. The rest of the place seemed pretty cool. Dark and dungeon like but no dwarves or wraiths or anything.

The food was delcious. I ordered the smothered chicken and it was some sort of Italian based dish with feta and tomato sauce and red peppers and dried tomatoes and it was delicious. If there werent some brown lettuce leaves and "clear" cucumbers in the salad, I would have given the food a 5. Edit: After reading some of the reviews, I find it hard to believe not many people have had good food here. Mine was delicious, FWIW.

I didnt require much service, just the food and water. If they do something about that draft tower, this place would be alot better. WIth that behemoth in the way, I wouldnt come back. Even though the food was great, I cant deal with the no-eye-contact thing.

Atmosphere - Grungy beer pub. Very close tables, crowded with late 20's, early 30's clientele. Cool beer menu on the wall, ceiling covered with old beer taps, very neat idea.

Quality - pretty good, over all. Beers served in appropriate glasses according to style.

Service - Lacking a little but could have been because of how crowded. Was seated very quickly (we got there before a big rush I suppose). Ordered two appetizers (chips & salsa and cocktail shrimp) that took nearly 30 minutes to arrive. Beer service was fast, we would order with the waitress and shortly someone else would bring the beer. Food service was again time intensive. It took about 45 minutes to get our dinner after ordering, but that could have been because it was crowded.

Selection - Beer selection was great. Nearly 100 beers on tap, more in bottles I believe. Food selection is varied as well. Everything from sandwiches, to pastas, to pizzas, to dinner entres, and dessert.

Food - Some good, some not so good. Chips and Salsa were terrible. I got the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin with Smashed Potatoes and Macaroni and Cheese. It was excellent, especially with the Lectio Devina Saison (rosemary aged). The other food looked so-so, french dip didn't look so good, pastas looked ok, ribs were good from what I was told.

Value - The beers are a bit expensive, but not outrageous. $5-$8 for GOOD beers, so I wasn't disappointed. I hate spending $5-$8 for Bud or Miller so I was happy to be getting good craft beer for that price. The food was a good value I think. I believe my tenderloins were $16, sandwiches were $8-$10. I was happy with the prices for the quality of the food and drink.

I forgot to mention they have an iPhone app with their master beer list that makes selection MUCH easier to read and ordering a snap. The app is pretty terrible, but it does the job.

This place puts beer above all. It serves 84 beers on tap, and is opening up another 100 when they build their addition next door. The shrimp poppers are to die for! Their master list of beers is a bit disorganized but it makes it fun. The beers are fairly priced compared to competitors. The atmosphere is very artsy, you'll feel out of place if you don't have some tattoos when you originally go in, but the staff friendliness changes that. The pizza is excellent and the sandwiches are also delicious. Don't let the location fool you, it's worth stopping in.

A trendy place, hipsters to bikers. A friendly place, with opportunities to strike up conversations with tables tightly spaced. With all the taps, you still have locals comment that there may not be one beer on to have that day. On a main street and in a growing craft beer neighbourhood in the heart of JA.. I had a few good stouts, and Brian caught up to his Narwhal. Good service.Prices reasonable.

Hit this place up for the first time this past weekend. Went with my girlfriend and another couple.

The atmosphere was cool with taps hanging from the ceiling all over the place and beer-related items everywhere you looked. The waitress told us to go download the app to get their beer list. We did and were impressed with the number and variety of beers available. I had a Two Hearted Ale on draft and it was delicious. Glassware was from different bars and breweries from around the country.

Food was good and reasonably priced. Service was adequate however the tables were so close together that we had trouble getting into and out of our seats.

I will definitely go back to Kickbacks in the future.

I've been here a couple of times, and it was never anything special. Went with a group on Halloween, it wasn't crowded at all - which is nice. But it took over 90 minutes After my friend got her check to get her food! It was boiled shrimp, not breaded or anything "fancy" - just boiled shrimp that came over 1hr 30 min after the freaking check. They refused to discount it. Another friend had a hard time ordering beer, because the waiter would hardly ever come by and when he did, quickly walk away without taking and orders. It was more expensive by about $1.50-$3 to get the same beers at another bar.

I've been to Kickbacks quite a few times and I like it more with each visit. The staff is extremely friendly and very casual both in appearance and attitude. The food is excellent and the variety is extensive, which is great for pairing with the 600 bottles or 80+ tap selections. There's never a shortage of good stuff to try, and each time I've gone back, they've added a few more local (particularly Jacksonville) beers. I usually take my time to dig through the menu for something wierd, vintage or rare at least once each visit, and the staff always takes the time to dig through the shelves to find what I ask for. They will also chill your selection down if it is at cellar temp.

A few things I would recommend if you're planning to visit (and haven't been before), and I'm sure others may agree on these:
1. download the app that has the bottle and draft lists. They have it available on iphone and android. They have binders in the restaurant, but when it gets busy, its really tough to get a hold of one and other people get really antsy when they see you're perusing it and they want a look.
2. If it is busy, be prepared to wait, I've been there on busy thurs, fri and Sat nights and it gets slammed. And as far as I know, they haven't started taking reservations.
3. If you're like me, and you are looking deep in the bottle list, think about getting them to find your toughest request first, cause they will probably have to dig for it, and it most likely wont be at serving temp. But they'll gladly chill it for you while you sip on something that's already cold.

Overall I love the selection of both the brews and the food. The atmosphere is great and I always end up in a good conversation with the other patrons, and have received some great recommendations.

Great service and atmosphere. I did not order food although my friends did and were very satisfied with the quality. The waiter was very nice and patient. He provided me with several beer samples with no problem and treated me and my accompaniments like family.

With around 80 beers on tap and 600 bottled beers in house, the selection is endless. When provided with the bottled list, you will be amazed at what looks to be an encyclopedia. This is a place that I could spend a lot of money at very easily but for all of the right reasons. Kickback's Gastropub is a great place to stop for whatever beer cravings you desire to fulfill.

I went here for the first time during a visit to my old hometown. I thought Jacksonville was lacking in bars serving microbrews, but my friend took me to this spot and it was awesome! People are friendly, it was a Friday and lots of college-age folks out.

I was impressed with the tap selection and the waitress was very friendly and willing to explain all of their beer. I would prefer a larger bar sitting area but for Jax-- this is a pretty kool sit-down place. great addition to the Riverside area!

I went here for the first time on my visit to Jacksonville. I was floored. The place was packed with locals, had 100s of beers on tap and in bottles, including a great selection of older and rare beers. I had a four year old 2008 Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale. I was apparently their last one! They also had plenty of the hard to find Bell's Hopslam. The service and the bartenders were great. My ONLY complaint is that the bar where you sit is lined with the taps instead of being behind the bar on the wall. I couldn't look the bartender in the eye like I would like to. I loved how they had their rare and older bottles on hooks along the wall. It was a unique way of letting me know what I could ask for.

This is where the locals go. I met so many friendly people that loved to call this their place to come. It was paced until 3:00 in the morning, on a THURSDAY! A definite must for people visiting the city. I will definitely return!

Terrific beer selection. Good service from people who seem to like being there. Fair food: for a place with great beer, it was fine; without great beer it would be pretty forgettable. Music was annoying, mainly due to a tinny system although the choice during my experience there was too metallic for me. I had a nice Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale and a couple Cigar City Brewing Jai Alai’s. Very nice selection although I was disappointed that the Stone Ruination had kicked by the time I got there. Overall, I had some good beer with good service (thanks Sam), but I'll try somewhere else next time I'm in Jacksonville.

The crowd is certainly very mixed and variable. The selection is incredible. I usually go and have had a third of the 84 beers that are on tap. Few other compare. Of those on draft the genres and selections are excellent and broad. There is no place else in Jacksonville that comes even close to te number of taps and broad range of breweries covered. The prices are reasonable but some of these beers are pricey to get ahold of therefore that cost makes some expensive. The food is actually a lot better than I expected. They have a nice selection. Overall you won't be disappointed if you are looking fr new beers to try and the food is good enough to go for more than just beer

Where to even start? I was in Jacksonville at a conference with some friends and colleagues. Through a thread here on BA I was able to get into contact with the owner, Steve, who actually drove over to the hotel to pick 4 of us up, with a table already reserved for us in his beer-nerdiest-employee's section, and took us to the restaurant (with an undisclosed stop on the way...sorry i won't divulge, but again- thanks so much, steve!).

We had a chance to try fantastic brews while hanging out with even more fantastic folks, highlights included the well-aged humidor cedar jai alai, the mo'kah, the birrificio del ducato chimera, the twenty faithful, the barley ryne, and that one that i won't tell you (again, thanks so much, steve!). The food was great, well priced, and the beer list - both draft and bottle - is world-class. I'll have to go back when they open the belgian cellar.

If I lived in the jacksonville area, I'd probably be here once a week. maybe twice. It's refreshing to be someplace where they are as giddy about good beer as we were - there were no pretensions or snobby staff, just nice beer nerds who really want to create something special. I'm so glad I went.
