Appearance: it pours an amber color and presents with a tannish or amber color head.

Smell: smells sweet with no hints of citrus or pine. Notes of cherry and caramel with medicinal qualities.

Taste: hops upfront but it has a medicinal quality. Taste the bitter rind of grapefruit and some cherries. This beer takes more after a strong ale than an IPA.

Mouthfeel: medium-bodied

Overall: this beer is okay. I find it taste more like a strong-ale with added hops. It does not present pine or tropical fruit hop qualities I find in others.

Balanced in the aroma and initially on the tongue, then big roll through for a bitter finish. Reminds me of Victory Hop Devil and other aggressive East Coast IPAs. The aroma's actually malty with fresh bread and caramel. The toasty, toffee malts pop, but are quickly overwhelmed by big grapefruit and pine. This is a fun change of pace from all the dry, blonde IPAs I'm drinking (and enjoying) so often. Only knock is I want more hops to match the malts in the aroma.

L: Dark copper amber color, quite dark colored for a regular IPA. Pours a small white head that dissipates quickly with little lacing on the glass.

S: Lots of pine and evergreen trees, some caramel malt. Aroma is a little one dimensional for an IPA.

T: Lots of pine and evergreen as in the nose and quite a bit of bitterness. A little bit of fruit and floral hops, but no very much. Once again a little one dimensional for an IPA.

F: Medium Carbonation and medium body

O: Compared to a lot of IPAs out there these days, this one is quite one dimensional.

12 oz. can poured into Spiegelau IPA glass.

A- Amber-chestnut in color. Light tan head, keeps well and leaves good lacing.

S- Evergreen, woodsy, with juicy citrus.

T- Piney and evergreen. Citrus is faint and pithy.

M- Medium. Dull bitterness with a dry finish.

O- Not bad. The aroma is nice. Other qualities are lacking a bit.

Reddish copper, with a large beige head, and minimal lacing.

Aromas of caramel, lager, light pine, and hint of peach or orange. As it warms there's even some roasty, nutty and coffee notes as well.

Caramel, pine, and grapefruit flavors.

Carbonated, dry, crisp and astringently bitter.

This is like a hoppy red ale, more on the red side than the hoppy side too. It's even more drastic when compared to its Imperial brother.

From notes taken yesterday:

Nice clear deep copper, though packed with small flakes in suspension. Head of sandy tan, very fluffy, somewhat creamy, retention excellent, fair lacing. Aromas of resin, light pine, caramel, a little grassy/grainy character. Starts out mildly bitter, tons of caramel in the background, works its way toward pine, orange, rind, dankness, spices, and peppercorn by the finish. Medium-bodied, nice thickness to it, still great for refreshment, carbonation is mild, nice and smooth beer.

12 oz can as part of Denver mix6 pk.
BB date Mar 17/16...The age of this can is surprising, given it's local popularity. But should still be good....

Pours a surprising red color. Very good inch of creamy, off-white head on the pour, but not long lasting,

First taste: malty sweetness.
This is very malt-forward.
No hop aroma, no hop taste. A hint of bittering hops. Not very resiny Sooo...."Patagonian hops" !?! What the hell is that ?!?

Not heavy or filling, not boozy. Easier to drink than the 7.2% abv might suggest.

So...like lie the recently-reviewed Odell Runoff Red IPA, this is really an Amber Ale....and Runoff Red is the better of the two.

If you're a PNW-style, IPA hophead, this is not your beer.
