11.2oz undated bottle poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 13.49% ABV per label. The beer pours impenetrable black with light brown head on a soft pour because I assume this beer is 8 or 9 years old. The head recedes to a thin ring and little else. The aroma is mild with notes of coffee, molasses and earthy hops. The taste is semisweet roasted malt, moderate cardboard and coffee. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is oily, sticky full bodied with less than medium carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, oddly unique. My first 8-9 year old 13+% black IPA with coffee. I'll finish the glass, which is more than I expected today when I bought it at room temperature...

Sample on tap at What’s Brewing Beer Festival, Stavanger. Black colour, dark brown in the highlights, low head. Aroma of malts, molasses and oak, hints of coffee. Very sweet flavour, molasses galore, malt sugar, sweetened coffee, fortified wine.

2014 bottle but tasted in 2021. Poured from fridge temp. Pours motor oil black with no head. The nose is an intense Russian imperial stout. Wood, licorice, molasses, leather, fire pit, tobacco, and some blackberries. Not getting much coffee on the nose. The taste is really surprising. This is aged, so I have no idea if this flavor is similar to what it was fresh. It's sweet. Maple syrup sweet. Still getting the black licorice and charred wood, but the sweetness eliminates the intensity of the bitter notes. The coffee has completely faded, maybe leading to a slight green pepper taste. That said, this isn't a bad thing at all. Old leather chair comes through after a while. The mouthfeel is thick and creamy with a long aftertaste. Super fun to try.

-Stout/porter glass.

A: Dark hersey chocolate bar pour has a faint whisp of tan colored head. This shows a lot of carbonation bubbles clinging to the vessel walls as well an ample supply of macro-bran colored floaties suspended within.

S: Boozy chocolate roast on nose. Dark licorice, dried dark fruit of plums, figs and cocoa powder. Some rich milk chocolate notes, and a promising scent of alcohol for a nice touch without being overpowering, a surprise for its 13.9% nature.

T: The flavor was a thick slurry of chocolate roast coffee. Bittering, but smooth and very refined in flavor with lots of dark fruit, burnt hop leaves, milky roast coffee and dark fruit of sugar raisins, figs, and plums. Spicy dose of alcohol adds warmth along with a smooth, silty minerality, some dried bourbon and alcohol spiciness of nutmeg and cinnamon.

M: Thick syrupy mouthful, heavy feel, silty campfire minerality that warms the tongue and cheeks. Heavy weight.

O: The flavor shows a lot of depth, complexity, and dark roastiness, rich in chocolate and coffee notes and a spicy alcohol touch. Big syrupy thick mouthful, you get a lot of bang for your buck at 11$ a 12oz bottle still worth it. Outstanding flavor.

11.2oz bottle served cold in a snifter. No bottling date to be found

Appearance: true to style it is a black ale. Nice creamy tan head in the begining but I'm looking at a small grouping of bubbles after 5 minutes. Some sediment in the glass.

Nose: tons of sweet caramel, coffee, cream, chocolate, toffee, dark fruits and complexity. No signs of oxidation.

Taste: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, green tea, coffee creamer, creamy mouthfeel, warming but not boozy, caramel, toffee, dark fruits.

Overall: this was a random bottle pick up and I'm very impressed. I know Surly is excellent and Lervig is knows for making some strong beers. I was impressed with the mouthfeel the most; super creamy especially for the 13.49% ABV.

N: chocolate and coffee. Tons of sweet caramel as well.

T: really sweet, tons of malt, chocolate, licorice coffee and caramel round out the beer.

If you like sweeter beers, this is for you. There's a touch of hops and a good bit of rye but again, very sweet.
