It's a black beer with little to no head. It smells of alcohol and medicine. I get coffee at first the a little dark fruit juices, the straight up alcohol and medicine. Terrible.

11.2 ounce bottle, no date on it that I can find. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like dark fruit, roasted/charred malt, coffee, and some light pine/citrusy hops. I like the flavor even more, it tastes like dark fruit, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, woody earthiness and some pine/citrusy hops. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's syrupy and slick with moderate carbonation. I thought this was good, I certainly wouldn't mind trying this again in the future! $8.75 a bottle.

1349 Black Ale

Poura jet-black, essentially entirely opaque, with a decently persistent, brownish-white head. On the nose, it's a big hit of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and liquorice, and rich black-bread maltiness, with a touch of pepper and only the barest whiff of alcohol. The first sip is surprisingly sweet, with liquorice and chocolate quickly followed by coffee, black-strap molasses, and a touch of pepper. On the mid-palate, the flavors recycle themselves: more chocolate, more liquorice, but drier, with coffee and pepper flavors more pronounced,z and a ghost of citric hop bitterness. Finish is medium-dry and more bitter. Coffee is more prominent still, along with the pepper, with chocolate and liquorice still battling it out for first place, while new flavors emerge in the background (toffee, hints of Brazil nuts, black walnuts, and hazelnuts, and a vague herbal flavor). At this point, a more pronounced citrus flavor and bitterness emerges as the hops, faded after some time in the bottle but still a force, make their presence more known, yet the malts and coffee still dominate. The body is nicely rich and thick, with an appropriately understated, yet creamy, carbonation. "American black ale," my arse; this is a balls-out, palate-bruising, yet cultured, hoppy American-style Imperial Stout. Far better than expected, and a very delicious surprise indeed from a favorite brewery and a favorite band. Also: so METAL!  \m/

-Stout/porter glass.

A: Dark hersey chocolate bar pour has a faint whisp of tan colored head. This shows a lot of carbonation bubbles clinging to the vessel walls as well an ample supply of macro-bran colored floaties suspended within.

S: Boozy chocolate roast on nose. Dark licorice, dried dark fruit of plums, figs and cocoa powder. Some rich milk chocolate notes, and a promising scent of alcohol for a nice touch without being overpowering, a surprise for its 13.9% nature.

T: The flavor was a thick slurry of chocolate roast coffee. Bittering, but smooth and very refined in flavor with lots of dark fruit, burnt hop leaves, milky roast coffee and dark fruit of sugar raisins, figs, and plums. Spicy dose of alcohol adds warmth along with a smooth, silty minerality, some dried bourbon and alcohol spiciness of nutmeg and cinnamon.

M: Thick syrupy mouthful, heavy feel, silty campfire minerality that warms the tongue and cheeks. Heavy weight.

O: The flavor shows a lot of depth, complexity, and dark roastiness, rich in chocolate and coffee notes and a spicy alcohol touch. Big syrupy thick mouthful, you get a lot of bang for your buck at 11$ a 12oz bottle still worth it. Outstanding flavor.

11.2oz bottle served cold in a snifter. No bottling date to be found

Appearance: true to style it is a black ale. Nice creamy tan head in the begining but I'm looking at a small grouping of bubbles after 5 minutes. Some sediment in the glass.

Nose: tons of sweet caramel, coffee, cream, chocolate, toffee, dark fruits and complexity. No signs of oxidation.

Taste: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, green tea, coffee creamer, creamy mouthfeel, warming but not boozy, caramel, toffee, dark fruits.

Overall: this was a random bottle pick up and I'm very impressed. I know Surly is excellent and Lervig is knows for making some strong beers. I was impressed with the mouthfeel the most; super creamy especially for the 13.49% ABV.

Has the requisite "Product of Norway" on the label.

33cl brown glass bottle served into a tulip at Kaisla in Helsinki. 13.49% ABV.

HEAD: Great complexion. Shining mocha colour with superb creaminess and froth. Recedes within a minute or so, true to its high ABV. Leaves a ring of light lacing as it recedes.

BODY: Opaque solid black. Not an ink-black, but dark. True to the style, no yeast or sediment is visible within.

It's a nice looking coffee ale; I'm excited to try it.

AROMA: Has a heavy schwarz malt and dark malt presence accompanied by pleasant hints of subtle roasted barley. The malty sweetness is tamed not by the coffee bitterness I expected, but rather by an unexpectedly potent herbal hop profile. Hints of milk sugar and oats lend still more complexity, but the coffee comes off shallow and reticent, lending only a hint of roast on the back end.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE: The herbal hops are surprisingly forward in the flavour profile, quelling (even usurping) the sweet malt backbone. For a beer so dark (i.e. comprised of dark and schwarz malts) it's surprisingly approachable, lacking the harshness you might anticipate in the form of rough roasted barley or coffee bitterness. The ABV is well disguised, and I find no yeasty notes.

I'd like a deeper coffee presence; this lacks the expressiveness of superior beers with the coffee ale moniker. Flavour duration and intensity are average. The milk sugars and oats do more for the texture than the taste, but they do lend needed intricacy to this surprisingly straightforward brew. Still, it balances a lot of notes, and its cohesion is impressive - even isn't quite a gestalt build.

TEXTURE: Smooth and wet, uniquely so for the style (probably on account of the oats). Moderately heavy on the palate, with a thick, slightly syrupy feel. A biteen sticky. Full-bodied, definitely. Its weight on the palate is apt for the style, but the taste lacks the level of complexity this mouthfeel is best suited to support.

OVERALL: Surprisingly drinkable for its high ABV. But it never delivers on its premise in that the coffee character is shallow and minor in the grand scheme of the flavour profile. It's not the impeccable brew you might hope for given the brewers involved, but it's worth trying if you can find it at a fair price. I'll be giving Lervig a keener eye going forward.
