Look: Pours pitch black with visible viscosity, forms body of the same with mocha lacing.

Smell: Sweet and spicy with lots of vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and cardamom notes. Faint alcohol on the back.

Taste: Sweet with warming spice, toffee, raisin, cinnamon, cardamom, and clove.

Feel: Surprisingly light between the spice and medium carbonation. Still a full-bodied stout with light syrup on the tongue.

Overall: An excellent stout for the winter, or any time you want something that's both warming and filling.

Poured from the 330mL bottle into a tulip glass at Buddies Beer in Jinqiao, Shanghai, China.

A: The beer is a pure black color with no light shining through. Head was tan with little retention after building up to 2 fingers.

S: Strong vanilla smell along with dark chocolate and spices. Slight rum note and a boozy character.

T: Strong spicy taste of cinnamon and especially of ginger and clove. This is like eating a Christmas cookie. Really nice baked cookie note. Brown sugar. Good sweet malty character.

F: Smooth with moderate carbonation.

Overall, a really tasty beer but not one that I can drink often. Very sweet. I would love this on Christmas or in the middle of a dark Norwegian winter.

Pours an oily, pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, marzipan, slight perfume and a certain herbal/spicy note reminiscent of cinnamon, nutmeg and even woodruff, which I'm sure comes from the tonka bean. Taste is similarily complex, being dominated by roasted, caramel malt, vanilla and dark, bitter chocolate, with hints of coffee, licorice, marzipan and that sligthly herbal/spicy note reminiscent of cinnamon / nutmeg / woodruff. Marvelous balance, with a slight bitterness and just a tiny hint of booze coming through in the aftertaste. Thick, creamy, almost oily mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation. The very high ABV is almost undetectable, except maybe for a very slight warming sensation in the aftertaste. This is my first tonka bean stout and I have to say it's just fascinating. I'm just wondering if it's not even a bit too complex for it's own good, but I certainly thoroughly enjoyed it.

L - Pitch black with a small mocha head

S - you've got some cinnamon (but I think it's actually tonka), molasse, vanilla, chocolate, booze soaked raisins

T - Same tonka presence, quite nice, vanilla, a bit of cocoa, a bit of heat which seems kind of odd as it doesn't seem to have chili in the adjunct bill but it's enjoyable anyway. A good balance, a nice complexity. Some sweetness but not much, some roasty bitterness.

F - lightly carbonated, smooth, some astringency, oak-like astingency. A certain bite.

O - This is a great and original imperial stout. The 13% ABV is almost unnoticeable. The closest beer this one reminds me of is Oro Negro from Jackie O's, which is a good compliment!

From Zombier. In Teku glass. Playing Bioshock Infinite. Rich, thick, sticky, creamy, original and complex. Sweet, with coffee, cinnamon and vanilla notes and a well hidden abv. Low on foam

Pours jet black with just a hint of chocolate colored foam.

Smell is roasty, with big notes of dark chocolate, coffee, a little bit of almond and licorice.

Taste is big and complex. Dark chocolate anchors the taste, and is layered with coffee, licorice and a hint of almost tartness. Finish is a little bit boozy and long.

Mouthfeel is medium to thick, well carbonated.

Overall, a unique stout, very tasty and flavors evolve well.

330 ml bottle Beer Merchants, Manchester - Pours jet black with minimal tanned foamy heady which quickly disappears. Medium carbonation. Aroma - Spicy notes - cinnamon, vanilla, hints of chocolate at the back. Taste - Spicy forefront again - cinnamon, vanilla, sweet, creamy, chocolate overtones, nutty notes, light bitter finish with nice non overpowering alcoholic warmth. If you like cinnamon rolls then this is for you. Like Omnipollo a real dessert beer. Interesting ingredient tonka beans which you may wish to check out. A complete one off and all the better for it.

L: Opaque black oily liquour with little brown lacing
S: Definitely coumarine-like volatiles from tonka beans, some cocoa is also present, pretty overwhelming
T: Tough stout indeed, but even more like whisky/cherry-perfume liquid
F: Alcohol is not obfuscated at all, whole volume turned on
O: Distinctive and potent brew; on the other hand not eager to repeat it; a letdown

On tap at Underdog, Dublin.
Viscous ebony under tan rim. 4
Cocoa, cloves, leather and cinnamon drops. 4
Fig + licorice; then winter spices, dark chocolate, a roasty cut, pepper, and treacle. 4.25
Full, round, and chewy. 4

13%, so it’s got a lot of room to work, but still staggering chocolate sauce, spice + umami. Christmas pud, said someone, and they’re not wrong. Cinnamon raisin bun, too. Not sure what the tonka brings, or if there’s a good base stout in there. But mighty. 4.25

My 2500th written review.

Almost pitch black color with fizzy mocha head. Aroma has liquor filled chocolate pralines, coconut, cacao, marzipan and sweet coffee. Taste is sweet with coffee, tonka, marzipan, rum and cacao liquor. Medium body, soft carbonation. Really sticky and desserty with a balancing coffee bitterness.

Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet black with almost no carbonation. Nose is heavy on vanilla, although the tonka beans are doing something here. Almost a Mexican spice. The cocoa really smooths things out. Getting a subtle cherry note as well. Taste is crazy! Getting lots of licorice, cinnamon spice, nutmeg, vanilla, chocolate, and some bitterness. Honestly one of the more unique beers that I have tried. I'm a big fan. Mouthfeel is very thick and creamy, as expected from a 13% beer.

Got this one at Plan B in Rotterdam a while back.

From a bottle into a snifter
Stout brewed with tonka beans, vanilla and cacao nibs.
Best Before 26 February 2021

APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy dark tan head with great retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Slowly fades to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass. Swirly wisp remains leaving some decent lacing down the glass. Good looking.

SMELL: The adjuncts are definitely there, with the tonka beans in the forefront, and notes of vanilla beans, cacao and sweet cream. The tonka can be described as a mix of licorice and ginger, perhaps. Definitely aromatic but the bean is very dominant.

TASTE: Tonka beans, licorice, vanilla and sweet cream up front. The tonka is definitely the star of the show here. More sweetness at the swallow with a bold and lingering finish of sweet tonka, licorice, ginger, vanilla and light cacao as well. This is certainly flavorful but becomes old really, really quickly. Tough to stomach after a few sips.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy and smooth on the palate, enough weight, goes down with a touch of a scratch and finishes mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: This was too overwhelming. As much as I like tonka beans, this was all tonka all the time. The sweetness, licorice and ginger character was just too much to stomach for a whole bottle, and half way though I had to call it quits. Despite it being one sided, iif you’re looking to tonka-it-up with your stout beer, this will certainly deliver. Worth trying, even if you’re just semi-interested in the bean. Be sure to share it with a friend though, as it might end up being rough going.
