A great RIS, in a classic style, with thick, smooth body, dominated by coffee, chocolate and cocoa notes. Medium acidity, dry aftertaste, with some dried herbs notes. Really good and well executed!

330ml Can from Morrisons supermarket (£4.50):
Jet black with a bubbly, tan brown head just over 1cm tall then halving in size & turning patchy in the middle. Not as strong as expected on the nose but opens with coffee, dark malts & dark chocolate with sugars & subtle vanilla notes to finish. The taste is dark as well with earthy malts, coffee & chocolate which are all a bit stronger than the nose. It's a little sweeter too; vanilla, oak & some dark fruits seeing things out. It's a medium to full bodied beer, moderate carbonation & a lingering earthy bitterness too. Definitely not as strong as anticipated but its well balanced & smooth.

look: one finger brown head which quickly dissipates to a scattering of small bubbles, this beer is jet black in the glass, no light bleeding through at all.

smell: a fair bit going on, roasted smokey malt, sweet dark fruits, fair bit of fig, cherry, it’s nutty, almond and walnut, whiskey, sherry, treacle, vinous quality to it, light coffee and chocolate aromas, quite inviting.

taste: far more malt forward in the flavour, super malty, big meaty roasted smokey malt flavour, lot of nutty flavours too, lots of walnut, some hazelnut, not as sweet as it is on the nose although some of those dark fruit flavours do poke their heads in, dark chocolate, molasses, quite a big wallop of bitterness on the finish, with some of the sweeter flavours lingering on, a good imperial stout, perhaps lacking in balance.

feel: medium to full bodied, light to medium carbonation, really sticky, dense but not too dense, perhaps a little thin in parts, it’s alcohol is very well hidden, but of course there’s still some warming of the back of the throat, and it’s certainly a sipper.

overall: quite a nice stout here, certainly full of flavour, just not as impactful as a beer of this strength oughta be.

Wow. So smooth for how rich. Packing a punch!

Can at Coriasso's. Pours a black colour, small head with no retention, tiny lace. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, licorice, dried fruits, petroleum. Full body, viscous texture, normal carbonation. Sweet coffee finish. Taste of chocolate, licorice, dried fruits, caramel, coffee. Some oranges. Really good dessert beer.

an impressive specimen, a huge oatmeal stout that has no doubt benefited some from some time in the cellar, a couple of years anyway. the pour is dense black, short tan head, and some solids i see coming from the bottle into the glass. i am amazed at the sediment when i get to the bottom of the glass, its congealed jelly-like globs sunken down, likely coagulated proteins from all the oats in here, this feels and tastes really oat heavy, that might be a product of age, its yucky looking and slimy feeling, but it doesnt reduce our enjoyment of this exceptional stout. there is a heavy black malt character to it, char, minerals, volcanic soil, and smooth starchy oats. a hint of smoke, booze soaked raisin, and licorice too. mellow though, not intense, in flavor or in alcohol strength coming though, it is very well refined in that way. earthy and roasty, spent coffee grains and coal soot, lots of body, but also lots of glide going down and just enough carbonation to it. overall a really good stout, i like how much i can taste and feel the oats in here, a pale grain in a dark sea, but it makes a big impact on this one. unique too, for how many of these i have had in my life now, this one stands out not just for its quality but in the flavor too, something about the ale yeast maybe. mature and delicious, i wish more beers from lervig came around...
