I just found my notes from my visit here back in the winter. We made the trek through the snow just to find this place based on some old reviews. I’m writing this review because there are only two others currently on BA.

First, it’s not that easy to find in the dark. Once inside, we were the only Americans in the place – nice. Instead of the standard Milano Happy Hour custom of an expensive first drink and open buffet, BQ is all about the birre. They do have good food and small plates are put out for you or you can order something larger.

When we visited, the five beer engines were all Italian and most of the taps were as well. Of course Belgium was well represented along with Flying Dog. After our second glass was delivered, Paolo Polli, the owner, sat down with us and did his best to talk with us and asked us why we were there. I guess not too many Americans visit in the off-season. He then broke out a bottle he brewed called Baüscia Ambaradan and was kind enough to let us have a taste – I begged him to sell me a bottle – no dice.
The Italian craft beer scene is confusing to me but for the most part I’ve been very pleased. The stuff that BQ serves is first rate and I will be back the next time I’m in Milano.

A gem in a city with an appetite for good beer but a dearth of good beer places.

I have read there is a craft beer movement afoot in Italy. This is not surprising, as my Italian colleagues and many of the people I saw at the restaurants in which I ate drank beer, not wine. There is obviously an appetite for beer, and where there is an appetite, there will be those looking for quality goods. BQ would be a quality establishment in any city. The atmosphere is that of a street side espresso bar. Large doors open to the outside where there is covered seating. I stopped in on at 2 pm on a Friday afternoon. I was the only one there (too early for Milanese beer drinks?). Grabbed something to eat (choices were between 4.5 and 6 Euro) and had a few beers. The sandwich (their Chinook - bean pate and cheese) was reasonably size and very tasty. Beer selection was all I hoped for. Three beer engines, 20 or so additional taps, and lots of Italian beer. The bottle selection was impressive, including a number of US beers that I can't get at home (Jolly Pumpkin, AleSmith, Lost Abbey, and Southern Tier to name a few). Prices were 6 to 8 Euro for the Italian beers I got. A bit pricey for 33 and 37.5 cl bottle, but who knows when or if I'll get a second chance. The service was more than I had hoped, since I don't speak Italian and the beer tender spoke little English (but was very helpful when I was choosing bottles).

Would I return? This is the type of place you keep coming back to. Great atmosphere and great beer, what else could you want. Next time I'm in Milan I hope to try one of their other locations.

Pub on a quiet side street with a heated enclosed marquee outside. Inside are bench tables, beer hall style, a row of taps, a chalkboard menu and a wall bottles - decor is beer and just beer!

Selection is 20 taps including BrewDog, Flying Dog, La Chouffe (iirc) and a load of artisan domestics, plus four casks - I didn't even know Italian crafts came in casks! Menu includes a staggering collection of bottles, including some aged.

Room is dimly lit and mellow. Staff were young, friendly and managed around any language gaps. e3 for a glass of any tap beer.

Crowd seemed young and grungy - impressed that the cool kids are looking for craft in Milan.

Even knowing about the health of the Italian craft scene, this place far surpassed any expectations. A beer selection across nationalities that would be anyone's envy and a pretension-free spot in a too-trendy city.
