Served as part of a sampler tray at their brewery. Poured a pitch black with small tints of brown. The body is light and watery. The aroma has hints of roasted grains with a touch of anise or licorice. Theres some burnt caramel in the flavor. On the whole, the beer is somewhat flavorful, but lacking in substance.

Black with lots of delicate lattice lace gently coming off a thin espresso-colored head that I blame on a bad pour than anything - supposedly it was a nitro-pour but I felt and saw no evidence of it. All other aspects were attractive though.
Smelled of a sweet dark malt, a strong bitter chocolate scent, and some soft oats notes with time. Had an excellent display of big roasty notes: great barbecue wood sort of roasted tone, warm and inviting.
Tasted of a hearty malt, serious chocolate flavors, and quite some bitter darkly so and close to black coffee in type, it was a grainy bitter but just short of harsh. Toward the finish the bitterness gave way to more of a overly-toasted bread consistency, as green and fresh-tasting hop flavors added to the finish which was mostly chewy and dry. Unfortunately a moderate-to-thin body, which was good enough, but needed a little more of the oat-induced softness to it.
Very drinkable and a very tasty stout, this is an excellent session stout, a bitter chocolate stout.

Despite the name, no Belgian ingredients are used in this beer. It was named "abbey" by the owner despite objections from the brewer. Abbey must be the name of a family relative. Anyway... It pours a very dark brown, but not quite black, with clear ruby and crimson highlights. It's got a standard carbonation (not nitrogenated) and brings up a short cap of light tan foam that holds fairly well. The aroma is limited but offers some light bittersweet chocolate and a dull roastiness. The body is medium/light with a fine carbonation that leaves it gently crisp in the mouth. The flavor expresses some light chocolate, a soft fruitiness (raisins), a mild roastiness and balancing bitterness as well as an interesting licorice note in the finish. Very nicely balanced with a high level of drinkability. The only problem I had with this beer was the chilled glass it was served in... I asked for my second one in the same glass!
