Yet another beer courtesy of the creator of the canquest, woodychandler. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a cola color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is off coffee, a bit roasty. Taste is coffee, a light bitterness, some roasted malts, a faint hint of chocolate. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

Here is another CAN that had been held in abeyance awaiting picture approval, but now I am ready to add it to The CANQuest (TM)!

From the CAN: "Forging Better Beer"; "We strive to honor personal craftsmanship. Our handcrafted beer is made in small batches to ensure quality and peak freshness. Brewed and CANned by Old Forge Brewing Company, Danville, PA."; "Plowshare Porter is a cutting edge Ameri[CAN] Porter with plenty of chocolate malt and a shovel full of hops. Plow right in."

I got excited by the loud Crack! and I started out with an inverted Glug until I realized that it was coming out of a tallboy CAN and the glass was filling too rapidly for my liking. I backed off just in time as a pseudo-cascade was forming two fingers of dense, light-tan head with good retention. Color was a deep, dark-brown with ruby highlights (SRM = > 27, < 34) and NE-quality clarity. Nose had a smoky, roasty chocolatiness like a dark chocolate bar. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was very much of dark chocolate. They may have used a shovelful of hops, but it was the malt that was the star in this one. Good lacing began to form in my glass as I drank through it. Finish was semi-sweet, very chocolaty, sort of bitter and smoky. Not bad as an alternative to all of the recent AIPAs, but not really my bag. If you are a fan of chocolate Porters, however, YMMV.

LOOK: Dark brown color with a soapy white head. Looks very good, with some lacing and bubbly head that has some staying power.

SMELL: Hoppy aroma but kind of stale, perhaps. Really little to no roasted malt to speak of. There is a small hint of smoke.

TASTE: Hop bitterness and mineral aspects show up first with a slight roasted malt flavor in the finish. On the lighter side of the porter style for sure. Slight smoke, fair amount of bitterness, and toast.

FEEL: Light bodied and lively carbonation makes for a crisp, rather effortless drinking experience.

OVERALL: A few shades above average for the style and on the light side, but perfectly fine for a session porter. Nothing amazing but would be perfect with some corned beef sandwiches and chips.

I don't typically like porters, but this one was quality.

Poured into a standard pint glass: color is dark brown, amber edges, head is tan, 1/4 inch thick with some light lacing on the glass.

Smell is a very nice blend of sweeter chocolate malt, light roast and hints of pale malt; some lighter earthy hops finish it well. This scent is great from a porter, great presence.

Taste is similar to the nose, nice chocolate malt flavor, light roast and subtle toast; hops are drying, earthy, not overpowering but provide nice complimentary bitterness. Flavor is just what you want from a porter nice sweet and hop balance without overpowering flavors.

Mouthfeel is also great, good bitter balance to a sweeter porter, not too carbonated, great lingering flavors.

Overall, a great brew in a pounder can, great porter style adherence with great drinkability.

Pounder can into a snifter. Thanks to ClockworkOrange for sharing. The brew appears brown with clarity around the edges. A tan cap rests atop with spotty lace.

The smell is roasty almost nutty with a little citrus, earth and hints of something along the lines of chocolate.

The taste is roasted with a nutty aspect and a little bitterness and citrus with fruity and floral hops and slight touch of alcohol.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is an interesting brew and easy drinking for what it is. Nothing wrong or off about it, just easy drinking and simple.
