On nitro-tap @ the Old Forge Brewing Company (Danville, PA) on 4/30/11. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a pitch black in the glass, with a stiff finger of mocha colored head. This remains thick and creamy, throwing up a cascade that settles into some heavy lacing. The aroma smells of green citrus and acrid smoky coffee character. Chocolate and caramel round out the back, mixing with the hop profile here to give off a deep earthy twang in the nose

The taste is roasted up front, which then gives way to an assertive green citric bitterness. Sweet notes of caramel and cocoa hang on the sides to offer up some balance but this mostly finishes dry and roasty with an earthy and fruity bitterness that comes out a bit strong in the end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a prickly carbonation up front but then a smooth creaminess from the nitro kicks in at the end and keeps this generally easy feeling.

This was an overall decent Stout but once again, there was a raw and earthy (almost vegetal at times) element to the hop profile here that would take me out of this once in a while. Based on the reviews for this from some of my buddies, I’d be willing to give this another shot. Maybe it was something going on with this batch.

Pours deep dark mahogany bordering black with a tan head.

Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee.

Taste was roasted malt with caramel notes, bitter chocolate and coffee, followed by hints of plumb. A very nice nitro offering.

A-Deep, dark brown with lighter, ruby tinted highlights. A dense, medium, light tan head retains well and leaves a nice amount of lace.

S-Notes of roasted malts with hints of espresso and bitter chocolate.

T-Super roasted malt flavour kicks thing off. After this subsides a bit notes of bitter chocolate and coffee come through. A hint of dank, earthy, bitter hop bite in the finish.

M-For such a "light" stout this has plenty of richness and is very smooth and creamy. Plenty of rich roasted flavour lingers.

D-Without question the best brew OFBC has made to date. My new session stout! This one has all the flavour you could ask in a 4.5% package....wonderful stuff. I hope it stays in the regular line up.

One of the standout beers of a two day, eight stop central PA beer tour.

Pours an opaque black with a generous tan head and good lacing. Both the nose and the tasty are very nicely roasty with great coffee notes and a bit of sweetness.

The mouthfeel on this beer is just outstanding. Creamy, as you would expect from a nitro pour, but amazingly rich for a moderate ABV oatmeal stout.

This beer was a pleasure to drink and I would love to have had another, but other stops were awaiting. Don't miss this one if you are in or near Danville.

I had this on draught (nitro) at the brew pub. Pint pour. It pours a deep mahogany with cola hues when held to the light, and two full fingers of dense, creamy tan head and lacing. It's a very attractive pour. The nose features roasted malt, black coffee, dark chocolate, and a whiff of oatmeal. It tastes as expected: oatmeal, burnt coffee grounds, baker's chocolate, nuts, and earthy char. It's actually more bitter than I anticipated. It has a creamy, pillowy mouth feel. Because it was served on nitro so there was very little carbonation. The 5.2% ABV is barely noticeable. Overall, it's an easy drinking, nicely-crafted, solid Oatmeal Stout.

On tap at the brewpub. Served way too cold in a pint glass. Appears a rich dark brown color with barely half an inch of your usual creamy, "born from nitro" head. Smells and tastes of deeply roasted grains, milk chocolate, bitter chocolate, mocha, touch of roasted coffee. A really rich, full roasted flavor here, very nice. Creamy and quite full bodied for such a low ABV stout (the chalkboard staes 5.5%ABV BTW, not the 4.5% claimed here. I could drink this stuff all day. My favorite offering from OFBC thus far.

On nitro-tap at the brewpub. Pours brown with a thick creamy tan head. Aroma of burnt malt, pretzels, and light hops. Flavor also has lots of burnt/charred malt with a decent palate. I am not really a fan of the malt flavors in this one, but it was ok.

On nitro-tap at Old Forge on 3/14/09.

A - Poured a dark brown body with a deep reddish tint around the edges and one finger of creamy tan cap that retained quite exceptionally and deposited lots of thick lace around the glass.

S - Lots of dark roast, chocolate and coffee notes with faint traces of black licorice in the back. Some sweet lactic notes also emerged. Hops are pretty well hidden in the nose.

T - Opens with a nice roasty, malty character with subtle hints of coffee and chocolate. However, the chocolate flavor really opened up as the liquid warmed. Some subtle earthy hops emerged in the finish to give this stout an extremely well-rounded flavor profile.

M - Solid medium body that was very smooth, creamy and not as thin as some other nitro stouts I've had in the past. Bit of earthy bitterness and a faint dryness in the finish with sweet notes on the tongue.

D - Excellent straight-up stout that was a pleasure to drink. Slack Tub featured a nice hop presence, and the nitro pour really enhanced its overall flavor and feel. Clearly the best offering from Old Forge thus far. Great job!
