16oz can received via the generosity of MacMalt as part of NBS BIF #5. No freshness date on the can.

Poured into a Jones Radiator mug, this was a dark amber color, slightly chill-hazed. Good sized, beige head that took time to drop and left lots of lace on the sides of the mug.

Grapefruity and piney hops greeted the workers at my olfactory, along with a subordinate but still substantial bready malt backbone.

Hop flavor is higher in the mix in the taste than I expected from the nose, but not in a really big way. Like a lot of eastern IPAs before the super fruity NE IPA, or whatever you want to call that particular sub-style, the balance of hops and malts taste closer than they would in a cliched example of a West coast IPA. That's not to say the malts run the show. The hops, while clearly the dominant partner, are simply on a somewhat shorter leash than what I am used to. Still, this is a tasty, flavorful beer that I would not shy away from if I encountered it at a local bar. Finish is dry, yet more sweet than I am used to as well.

Medium bodied, with a coating, resiny mouthfeel.

Like I said above re: the flavor, this is different than most local IPAs, but not hugely so. While I doubt it would be my absolute local favorite if brewed here, it would still be a pretty solid choice when craving an IPA. Never heard of it or Old Forge before, but based on this encounter I would definitely drink this again and give something else from this brewery a shot. Thanks, MacMalt.

Poured from 16 oz. can into IPA glass. No date on can. It pours a lovely honey-amber color with two fingers of ecru-colored head and serious foamy lacing with great retention. It smells of biscuit malt, lemon peel, grapefruit, and floral hops. This is a malt-forward IPA with a blast of bitter hops at the finish. When I tried this on draught I tasted the citrus more than out of the can but I cannot discern the canning date. So this is a hybrid review of Overbite on draught and from the can. The tastes are nicely balanced. Neither the can nor the website is specific about the hop profile, referring instead to "Pacific Northwest hops." Regardless, the hops bite at the end. This IPA is medium-bodied, moderately carbonated, and the 7.5% ABV gives it a nice pop. Overall, I think I liked it better on draught but, again, I can't tell the age of the can. The can is a little less fruity but that may be due to age. This IPA is worth considering and I'm contemplated a visit to the brewery.

Poured from a tallboy can into a tulip.

L: Pours a dark amber.. slightly hazy with 1.5 fingers of creamy white head. Great lacing.

S: Malty sweetness and citrus... piney.

T/F: Strong malt backbone... almost made me think I was drinking an Imperial IPA. That sets up a very nice floral and citrus hop profile... biscuity, and you get the sensation of mild sweetness up front before the hops kick in on the back end. Nice and resinous... generous carbonation.

O: Overall a very pleasing IPA and the best beer I've had so far from Old Forge. Great stuff, and I'd drink this any time.

On draft, in a tall glass

Clear copper in color. Thin head. Pine hop flavors in the aroma. Taste is fairly bitter on top of slightly biscuity malt. Dry lingering finish. Thin to medium bodied.

Overall too much bitterness without hop flavor.
