Appearance is a copper color beer that is slightly fizzy. There was a half finger of head that dissipated rather quickly but left some nice lacing behind. The nose is only mildly hoppy. The dominant flavor is an almost bubble gum sweetness that is desperately odd. There was also a quick shot of spiciness which is even odder. To top it off, the hoppiness on the finish was almost non-existent.

I’d say this is definitely misclassified as an IPA but I have no idea what it category it belongs in.

16 oz can.

Pours a a clear dark copper amber with a frothy pale cream head. Fades to a thick collar, trace lace. Stale malt nose, bread, floral, and biscuit. More hop bitterness throughout flavor than expected, citrus and grassy, with a strong caramel malt body. Medium fully body, strong carbonation, bready, bitter finish. I assume this is an older can, and despite the nose being horrible, I suspect this is actually a nice resiny IPA.

Enjoying Old Forge out of a 16 oz can...

A: Pours a mid amber raising a thick, medium lasting 2 finger head. No real lacing and ghosts of floaty, chill haze.

S: Hop front aroma well balanced by the caramel/malty aromas. Grapefruit & pine. Winter forest.

T: Follows the smell, with great balance - hops slight dominant. There's underlayer of tea-like sweet maltiness offset by bittering hops. Dry hoppy finish.

M: Good weight with medium body. well carbonated and balanced.

D: 100% American IPA. Like their APA, not a stunner, but a solid beer I would order again.

"A must for fans of IPAs with a lot of cascade flavor." agree with this reviewer.

Poured into a standard pint glass, color is copper, transparent, great off white to light tan head that is dense and thick, head laces well along the outside of the glass.

Smell is subdued, mostly toasted malt flavors upfront; as it warms the hops come through, earthy bitterness, some pine and lighter citrus.

Taste is pretty solid, nice light toasted malt, clean sweetness, nice hop flavor, bursts of pine and citrus, lemon prominent, light earthiness. great flavor balance from a stronger ipa.

Mouthfeel is very well balanced, hop bitterness presents upfront with a lingering sweetness and bitterness that work well, good carbonation but it doesnt overpower.

Overall, this is a great brew, easy drinking, almost a strong pale ale with its solid malt backbone, but a good, simple hop palate that is strong enough to back up the ipa moniker. another great brew from Old Forge.

16 oz. can poured into a bulbed pint glass. Liquid itself comes out a nice slightly pale amber color. The clarity on the liquid is outstanding. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder in this scenario and some like a hazy beer, others like it clear, but it's tough not to respect the clarity here with a hearty color, impressive. Nice orange cream colored head that's crazy big on an aggressive pour, mostly small bubbles to make it look frothy, but there's some slightly larger bubbles as well. Pretty good lacing after each sip as well. Overall a really impressive looking beer.

Smell is pretty good, like any IPA its hoppy, no exception here, not a hop bomb, but that's what comes out strongest. There's a nice grassy tone, but a good blend of citrus (primarily grapefruit and light tangerine), and a touch of pine.

Not really a whole lot different in the taste area than as the smell. Hoppy but well balanced overall. Probably not quite as grassy as it is cutrusy, maybe a little bit more of the citrus peel at the end for a touch more of bitterness. Don't get me wrong though, this isn't a palate wrecker, starts out a nice sweet bready tone.

Nice mouthfeel, flavor lingers, a hard medium body. Great carbonation level and completely clean and fresh feel. As stated before it's well balanced and it starts sweet with a nice dry bitter finish at the end with a touch of grit. Really drinkable IPA, could easily be a nice crowd pleaser.
