Style: English Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer style was created in the mid-1750's. A dark full-flavoured beer but smoother and less bitter than stout. Made with softened water, Propeller London Porter is a blend of pale, roasted and chocolate malts, hopped with English and North American varieties.

Porter was the drink of the masses long before lagers or modern ales were fashionable. The name Porter originated because this strong, nourishing drink was reputed to be the favourite beverage of the hard working porters of London's Covent Gardens.

On tap at the brewery.
Near black body is opaque with dark ruby highlights. The tan head is creamy and durable.
Chocolate and coffee in the nose both reappear in the flavor but with faint coffee and lots of dark roasted grains.
Smooth, full body.

Overall; not quite up with Fullers but admirably close.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown. Good looking brew. Smells is roasty but also sweet. Dark malt meets a dark sugary sweetness. Flavor is roasty, chocolatey and quite sweet. The sweetness dries out during the finish, which is preferred. Has more body than what you'd expect from a beer at 5%. A simple Porter.

Poured from a 341 mL bottle

A- Pours an extremely dark hue with a slight ruby tint topped by a deep tan 2 finger head; this sight is the definition of beauty in terms of a porter.

S- Roasty, toasty, etc., etc. Very intense and inviting.

T- The taste follows much of what the aroma has to offer. Robust, roasty, creamy... everything a great porter should offer.

M- Medium body with low to medium carbonation. Feels nice on the palate and finishes slightly dry.

O- Overall, I have to say that this is a great beer. No, it certainly isn't the best Porter i've ever tasted but it definitely deserves a taste. If you haven't had a brew from Propeller, I highly recommend their entire selection. I've yet to taste a bad brew from them. A++

Bottle from the brewery
Pours a solid dark brown with ruby highlights and a smallish off white head that dissipates rather quickly. Aromas of roasted grain, toffee, caramel and hints of earthy. The flavor follows the aroma quite well. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Decent porter, I prefer them a bit more robust, but this one is tasty.

Propeller Brewery 'London Style Porter' @ 5.0% , served from a 650 ml bottle purchased for $5

A-pour is cola brown from the bottle to near black in the glass with some ruby red peeking out along the glass edge with a medium size tan head leaving a spotty lace along the pint

S-smells boozey , robust , and some roasted malts

T-nice porter , definate creamy start on the swallow that has a bit of dryness at the end

MF-ok/good carbonation , feels full bodied

Ov-good beer , I've walked by this brew so much , never trying or buying , glad I finally did buy & try , I will definately drink more in the future

On tap at the Henry House in downtown Halifax, on a crisp early fall afternoon. Doesn't get much better than this in terms of setting.

Poured into a Propeller nonic glass. Dark, chestnut brown, nearly black, with a thick creamy head which survives throughout the pint. Sheets of creamy lacing. Great looking porter.

Nose is dark fruit, dark coffee, dark chocolate, cream, caramel. Good malt profile.

An excellent, well-crafted porter which has some lovely roasted grain, caramel, dark coffee and cream notes to it. Dry finish.

Medium-thin bodied, watery, but with a pleasant creaminess.

Holds up well a few years after I last had it, and with it being on draught a few blocks from where it was brewed, it certainly was at its very freshest, which made it taste all the better.
