Propeller Kristall WeizenPropeller Kristall Weizen

Brewed by:
Propeller Brewery
Nova Scotia, Canada

Style: Kristalweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.30%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
Literally "crystal wheat." A Kristall Weizen is a filtered pale Weissbier. It pours "crystal"-clear rather than yeast-hazey. Propeller Kristall Weizen is made with special Weizen yeast, German Noble hops and equal amounts of barley and wheat malts. Like its Hefeweizen counterpart, Kristall Weizen develops a richly-textured, firm, white head in the glass. Very light, spritzy-effervescent and refreshing on the palate, with creamy texture and gentle, lightly fruity character, it finishes with a touch of dryness. Propeller Kristall Weizen pairs well with summer heat and good times... Prost.

bottle poured into pint glass oct2 2010

A golden yellow with a couple bubbles floating up to a nice two finger head that great retention but left no lace

S some dry cereal with mild spice and banana

T not far from the smell but with some faint bubble gum

M light and well carbonated, fluffs up a little in your mouth

D easy enough too drink, not amazing but not lacking either, may have scored higher if I was sitting under a hot sun

I only saw this once while in Halifax so I'm glad I picked it up when I had the chance, worth trying but I wouldn't go searching for it

Crystal clear golden pour (as it shoould be), with a soapy white head that left a few slippery lace spots. Light banana and clove notes play against a background of cereal in the nose. Really frsh and clean krstalweizen flavour, with a soft wheat body, mild banana presence and light orchard notes. Soft mouthfeel suits this beer nicely, and makes it eminently drinkable.

A nice drinker.

Bottle brought back from the brewery by a friend of mine. Shared as part of a beer tasting evening.

Poured into a festival-sized sampler glass. Clear and bright, pale golden/straw, with a thin, yet persistent head and some nice lacing.

Nose is hefe, which is precisely what I was hoping for. The wheat is pretty hard to detect, allowing honey, grape, banana, citrus and (strong) notes of clove to make their appearance.

Light, refreshing, this is a great kristalweizen. The sweetness of the brew is cut by the bitterness of clove and the tartness of lemon zest. The finish is bitter and crisp. Light bodied, tart carbonation.

Haven't had a good kristal before, so this was a great true introduction to the style. Though I still much prefer hefeweizens to their clearer cousins, I can certainly see the appeal to this brew. Good stuff.

Dated: July 4th week
From: Premier Wine & Spirits

A: Clear golden body boasting three fingers of white bubbly head. Retention is poor, and leaves decent lacing.

S: Nice front of hops, wheat with a subtle mixture of cloves and banana.

T: Very pleasant mixture of hops & wheat with a touch of banana and clove.

M: Light bodied and high carbonation. Very refreshing and leaves a mild malt finish and is quite crisp.

D: Very good brew here. I much prefer the hefe, but this is a great alternative. Tastes like their Pilsner, but with some more complexity.

Beautiful day, so picked up a growler.

Pours a light amber/gold color with a finger of head. Very little visible carbonation after the initial pour, but retention is ok. Nice amount of lacing left on the glass.

Scent is pretty close to their hefe (as expected). Some light wheat and banana scents. Maybe a bit of clove.

Taste is more wheat and clove, with a minor banana taste. Slightly sweet honeyish malt flavoring in the back. More crisp than the hefe, with a dry finish.

Very good solid beer. Excellent for summer days. Not quite as good as the unfiltered hefeweizen though.

Bottle a bottle at Bishops Cellar

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear golden colour with a bone white head which quickly dissolves to a ring. Not much lacing.

Aroma: Light aroma of banana, wheat obviously, mildly hopped.

Taste: Very light. Very slight sourness from the wheat, mild hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light and crisp.

Final Statement: This is my first taste of this style, I can see it being quite nice if drinking several outside on a hot day. I think I prefer it over Propeller's Hefe, but I'm still not a wheat beer kind of guy.
