Might as well try this while I’m in Edinburgh. Pint from cask at Athletic Arms, a bit of a walk out past the sights and sounds of the old town. A very plain IPA, light on booze but also flavor and body. Drinks well enough but nothing to seek out or try again.

April 2006: 500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal, Stavanger. Golden to amber colour, decent lasting head. Pleasant hoppy aroma with fruity notes (citrus, pineapple). Flavour is moderately hoppy and refreshing, grapefruity in the finish. Not quite as good as the the cask version, but even from a pasteurised bottle it is a pleasant session beer without any obvious flaws.

A murky dark yellow hue, head that dissipates quickly leaving plenty of lacing Fresh fruity aroma. Good so far. Medium bitter taste like well a bitter in fact, it tastes quite astringent and has a medicinal taste. Didn't taste like an IPA to me and I found it to be a confused drink that I did not especially enjoy. A former CAMRA Champion Supreme Beer but then I do sometimes wonder if CAMRA hand out awards by throwing darts at a map.

L- Mid chestnut, pours with thin white head reducing quite swiftly. Very little rising CO2.
S- Toasted grains and malts, pleasant.
T- Crisp and fresh, into toasty grain.
M- A clean tasting beer on the palette.
O- Waitrose must have decided to clear this beer pronto, perhaps to stock something with better sales and margin. It's easy-drinking, there is nothing wrong with it, just nothing really note-worthy at all. Ie. zero reason I'd look out for this beer again. Maybe that's Waitrose's thinking too...
500ml bottle. Bought from Waitrose London, reduced from £1.80 to 99p. BB 31/1/19.

Deep amber color with a thick two finger head with good retention and leaving laces.
Aroma with notes of English earthy and tangy hops, herbal towards medicine and a bit of musk.
Flavor with notes of flowers, mild orange-grapefruit citrusy, English earthy and tangy hops, tea leaves, lime peel, tamed malt sweetness, a bit of sulfur and same herbal note that is bordering medicine. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Light bordering medium body with appropriate carbonation.
Spicy, earthy and almost medicinal English IPA with a character of its own. A bit enigmatic. Very well attenuated and undeniable faithful to style.

Poured into an English pint glass, the appearance was a stiff golden color with a glistening finger's worth of white dissipating head. Boy, that didn't last at all. Not much lace, just seemed to slide into the beer very quickly.
The aroma had some earthy to herbal hops up front and then melding into a smooth cracker/somewhat toffee maltiness.
The flavor was moderately sweet and pulling the hops to the malts cleanly. Fairly nice malty aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, as an English IPA, it works. I really don't see much wrong with this but am hoping more people will learn the difference between an English IPA and an American one as they're pretty different in their make ups.
