Bought on the train from Aberdeen to Inverness. At best, a party beer: mass produced with all the industrial smells from the popped can opening, soda-like carbonation popping out the top like a coke. In a plastic cup, the yellow liquid is limp and sad as the carbonation fizzes out, leaving little head--or flavor--behind. I'm happy the company was good: oil riggers back on dry land after two weeks in the North Sea. Order something else if you can.

Good Scottish ale although this one bought in Scotland may have a lower ABV at 4.5. Caramel malt, color, aroma all as they should be for the style. Drank this at room temp so a bit cooler might have helped it.

Pours a slightly cloudy, dark amber coloration with a small, fluffy head. Smells vaguely of grainy, caramel malt and floral hops, with hints of dark fruit and red berries. Taste is a decent balance of grainy, caramel malt and floral, grassy hops, as well as hints of dark fruit and red berries also coming through, with notes of fig, plum and red currant, while there is a certain mineral note to this as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grainy malt, floral hops and certain mineral note lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

I didn't find this one particularly enjoyable, to be honest. While there's a decent overall balance of malt sweetness and hop bitterness to this, the malts seem too grainy and indistinct, while the hops feel overly floral, almost soapy, with that certain meineral note being quite unpleasant in the aftertaste. Those dark fruits and red berries add a bit of depth to this, but seem vague and don't really stand out much, getting lost in that grainy, mineral flavor profile here. This also somehow manages to taste kinda boozy for it's low ABV, which really isn't a good thing either.

it's all fine and well sampling the most exquisite and interesting and complex beers there is in the world, and building this ritual around beer. but when it comes to just drinking some tinnies outside I will always choose McEwan's Export. no grapefruit guava lychee IPA, limited edition milk stout, piss-reminiscent lager or whatever. just a humble can of Redex. it tastes good and its cheap. I enjoy drinking it. molto bene.

Nothing like the original McEwans Export since being brewed in Wolverhampton. So disappointed one of my favourite drinks has now changed. No toasted malt flavour, now soapy bubblegum taste. I have been drinking McEwans (60/-, 70/-,80/- ) for nearly 40 years and this product is nothing like these old grand ales.

Despite being brewed by midlands based Marston’s, not Caledonian as said in the heading, it retains its Scottish/ North Eastern English character. It’s not too gassy even when drunk straight from the can, clean, dry-ish, balanced but slightly favouring malt over hops in both flavour and aroma.

£ 1.45/500 mL can at SPAR, Kyle of Lochalsh, Scotland.
Can dated “31/03/19” on bottom. Served at room temperature in an imperial pint glass.
Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Amber, clear.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.7 cm, controlled side pour), off white, creamy, excellent retention, slooowly diminishing to an irregular five mm ring and complete layer. Gobs of lacing remain after head retraction.
Lacing – Very good – thick, wide rings of predominantly tiny bubbles.
First pour – Amber, hazy.
Aroma – 4 – Caramel and malt.
Flavor – 3.75 - Begins with caramel maltiness, slightly sweet. Ends with a bit of malt bitterness. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.5 – A very pleasing appearance and a good nose starts this Scottish Ale off correctly. The flavor is somewhat better than many run-of-the-mill brews, with the bitterness under control and not over-balancing the sweetness. The mouth-feel is the same as every other Scottish Ale. Overall, above average for a mass-manufactured ale.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2018. Purchased recently from Home Bargains. A classic Scottish brew with 150 years of history.

A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep coppery-brown hue with good clarity and plentiful carbonation. Forms an enormous head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a persistent surface layer. Slight lacing.

S: Aroma of caramel malt with hints of ale yeast, stewed hops, mild barley sugar, faint wet cardboard and a sulphurous twinge in the background. Decent enough for a mass-produced ale.

T: Tastes of caramel malt with notes of stewed hops, ale yeast, subtle barley sugar, a hint of grain and a touch of harshness in the background. Slightly sweet, with a restrained leafy bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with prickly carbonation and good body for the strength. A bit too carbonated, at least initially. Aftertaste of mild caramel malt, stewed hops and ale yeast.

O: Pretty good - a cut above many ales with similar production volumes. An attractive looking pint, while the aroma and flavour possess a satisfying mix of caramel malt, ale yeast and subtle hops. Body is OK, just a bit too lively. Drinkable - a subtle classic. Worth sampling.

Copper color with a one finger thin head with short retention.
Aroma of caramels, spices, earthy hops, butterscotch and red fruits.
English flavor with notes of caramels, slightly toasted malts, soap, floral and earthy hops, ginger, tea leaves, nuts and red fruit citrusy. Dry aftertaste with a low to medium bitterness.
Light towards medium body with appropriate carbonation.
Mild Scottish ale and very easy to drink. Nothing exceptional though.

Bottled
rich brown body body with good coverage of white head
toffee & carbolic soap aroma
That soap goes through to the flavour in a very traditional beer taste with nice malty wheat and mid strength bitter finish
good mouthfeel, nice carbonation
decent stuff

Rich deep copper colour. Slight frothy head.
Hoppy aroma.
Light bitterness with earthy notes. Some distant malt.
Insubstantial mouthful.
Nowhere near what I remember from years ago which was a much richer Scotch Ale.

Dark brown tea colour with no carbonation, filtered and topped with 2 fingers of creamy beige head.

Dried grass, tea, caramel, very light.

Tea, caramel, grass.

Smooth, creamy light body, little carbonation.

Really smooth brew. Got in Chiang Mai, drank May 20th, 2014. Really creamy thought there is no strong flavor, just a light delicious feel to a hint of caramel malty goodness.
