I had this lovely brown ale back in the 1980's many years prior to Heineken/Inbev scooping it up. I drank it on draft in London, England and have had large and small bottles of it in the USA. Lighter in color and with a fairly thin creamy head, it has a slightly toasty sweet thin taste with a soft mouthfeel. It is lightly bitter and has a medium-fast finish. A very easy drinking and tangible tasting beer. It is very good in it's style.

Surprised that in my over 600 beers, I have never previously reviewed this one . Also surprised that a mere 9 people have previously reviewed this on on BA.
LOOK: Pours a crystal clear amber color with a full finger tan head that slowly fades. Retention is better than average and a small head stays throughout along with a decent amount of side glass lace.
AROMA: Roasted and burnt malts, a scent of cocoa beans.
TASTE: Lots of malt, a bit thin. Hops absent and also needed.

From notes 2/8/13: Pours a clear cola brown producing only a single finger of off-white, flimsy, soap bubble, rapidly diminishing head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is weak and thin with toasted and caramel malts, roasted nuts and as expected little detectable hop profile. Taste is only a slightly more robust version of the nose with a little bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. Some bottles have a hint of butter after mid-sip and it is not uncommon to get a hint of skunk. Mouthfeel is light to medium with moderate carbonation.

Catch up rating from notes, 2012: Bottle picked up at Ramstein's Brit Shop. Pours out a medium brown, still clear, foamy head dissipates. Aroma is classic brown, sweet, brown bread, toasty, some nutty scents. Taste is more of the light roast malts, nutty character a bit fuller in the taste. Seems thin, and flat, but not uncommon for the Brits. 2018: While this a classic gateway beer to darker styles, this beer that spotlighted the style, now is a afterthought. Still worth trying....

Look: Very dark brown, with just enough clarity for light to shine through. Practically no head after a second or two.

Smell: Nutty and strongly malty.

Taste: Bitter, toasty malt. Notes of brown bread. Almost no hops.

Mouthfeel: Thick and almost no carbonation, like a stout.

Overall: Toasty, easily drinkable, a little too bitter.

Dark copper, extremely clear. Light tannish head of weaker retention. Strong, but light roast/toast aroma. A bit bready-sweet and a bit nutty. Faint banana and pear esters as well. Tastes like a decent beer, but not so much a brown ale. Very malty, but not the 'darker,' more robust flavor qualities one should expect from the style. In short, more comparable to a number of under-hopped macro lagers (Miller Fortune comes to mind, more so than say, a Budweiser), than to any ale. There is a very light, basic, hop bitterness to the finish. Feels about medium in body, maybe a bit too thin. Its plenty smooth though, and neither too prickly nor too sudsy when it comes to its moderate level of carbonation. Fairly dry finish, leaving a stickiness on the teeth.

A beer in disguise, quality is lacking and tastes cheap. A bad brown ale

Newcastle Brown Ale - The Caledonian Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a glass, this beer's head is 0 fingers thick, with no lacing, and a clear dark brown body.

Smells like roasted, caramelized malts. Not much going on with hops in this beer.

I taste mostly malt with notes a caramel note throughout. Nothing really here in the hop territory.

The mouthfeel here is smooth and clean.

Overall, I'll give Newcastle Brown Ale - The Caledonian Brewing Company a 4.25
