Freetail Rye Wit pours a hazy yellow-orange with some frothy head.

smells strongly of tart apple and spices. bready, wheaty, and strong.
good mix of rye and wheat flavors. strong coriander and spiciness. the rye adds to this, rounding it out. slightly tart with what could be considered citrus peel. finishes slightly dry, easy drinking, and delicious. ends well, with lingering bready, yeasty, and coriander tastes.

a very exceptional Tejas wit

Taste and mouthfeel was more like a heffe than a wit to me.

Thanks to slasher007 for sharing this growler.

Pours golden yellow with a white head. The aroma is lots of coriander and orange peel. The flavor is similar to the aroma with lots of orange peel and coriander as well as some spiciness from the rye which comes in during the aftertaste. A very juicy mouthfeel and medium carbonation. For a witbier, this one has tons of flavor.

On tap at the brewpub in the outskirts of San Antonio.
Hazy light yellowgold with a semi-durable white head that leaves a little bit of lacing.

Complex arom is lemony, spicy and bready.

Flavor: more hoppy than suggested by the aroma. Lemon, banana, light malts and a good bit of spicy rye. Well balanced and somewhat layered.

Feel: light body and medium carbonation. .

O: a spicy and intersting wit beer. Recommended.

On-tap at the brewpub.

Pours an opaque lemon-yellow color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of bready wheat with good amounts of light citrus aromas. Also present are mild amounts of coriander.

Tastes good. Wheat flavors with a nice twang kick things off with mildly tart citrus flavors. Midway through the sip light amounts of bread enter into things along with a mild spiciness from the rye. The spiciness carries through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I had no problem finishing my glass and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was a nice take on a witbier, although I may be biased as rye is probably my favorite adjunct. Well worth a shot.

Growler pour into my Carlsberg pilsner glass. A flume of champagne head, with lace just like it's namesake. Though it's all atop a dusty pale straw body.

Smell is a touch doughy, accompanied by a little pepper. A subtle apple tone with a grassy touch. Even warm, it barely makes a showing.

Flavor is dominated(I use that word hesitantly) by crusty bread, minoring with an illusive rub of citrus rind, & an itch of yeast. A pleasant toasted, iron-y taste draws out the finish. Coriander didn't show up in mine. In total, very much in reserve, & even watered down in some aspects. Just not enough flavor for such an interesting recipe.

Carbonation is somewhat spritzy, but overall a little low(probably because I didn't pounce on the growler the moment we met). Dusty.

Way too subtle & cautious I felt. Let the rye be free. Because of its tip-toeing, I can't help but think of it as an underachiever. A great idea that just needs some heavy tweaking(psst... more rye).

Served on tap at Freetail Brewing Co. on 01/09/2009.

Appearance: light straw, cloudy, the almost "white" appearance the style is named after.

Smell: Cirus and spice dominate. As noted previously, apparently they use grapefruit peel as opposed to orange - the difference is subtle but noticable if you are seeking it. One of the subtle changes in this beer from a traditional wit. Overall though, a wonderful smelling beer.

Taste: Refreshing citrus balanced by the corriander spiceness. A tad more dominated by the spice. Plesant, soft mouthfell. Rye adds a subtle grainy element to the mouthfeel.

Overall impression: A wonderful wit. I was told brewer Jason Davis was a former employee at the Celis Brewery, which would explain such a good wit right out of the gate. Probably one of the best of the style I've ever had.

I got a growler of this for a BA, which he ended up sharing. The pour was still carbonated very well. Golden cloudy witbier with a tart nose. They sour mashed this overnite, which gave the beer a delicate tartness. Not too much, but just enough to keep you going back for more and more. I extremely drinkable witbier. Texas has proven itself that we can brew great Heffs and witbiers!

Pours an extremely cloudy pale yellow color with a thin layer of creamy white foam. Fades at a normal clip and leaves a nice 3D sheen on top, just a touch of lacing is evident.

Oddly enough, I get some banana aroma in here with some of the traditional coriander, orange peel and perhaps some cloves. The rye adds a spicy note, but does not impact the nose all that much.

Ah, that is tasty! The rye pepperiness really makes it into the flavor with some lemony citrus notes and of course some coriander. A bit of hop bitterness along with the citric acidity cleans up the palate on the finish with the quickness. Some, but not much yeasty flavors, just about right. This is an easy drinking wit with plenty of flava. When visiting Freetail, this one is a good bet.

Poured from the growler into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: Beer pours a clear very light golden color with a quarter finger of white head. The head fades to a ring around the pour.

Smell: Light malt and yeasty. The overall smell is very light.

Taste: Light malt with a ton of yeast. The overall flavor is bread like with the rye spice showing up in the finish. Very light overall.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with fluffy carbonation and a finish that is a touch dry.

Overall: Good enough, but I thought it was a bit boring. Easy to drink.
