$2.50 a pint during Tuesday special, 4.19.11.

One finger white head, quick dissipation with good lacing. Light amber body, several sporadic rising trails of carbonation. Not much going on in the nose, perhaps because the beer was served too cold. Taste is dominated by caramel and crystal malts which threw some cherry-ish esters on back end, not a lot of hops, a bit floral, definitely malt forward. Mouthfeel is medium, decent effervescence leading to a fairly dry finish. Pretty sessionable, a good beer to start the evening, though the lack of hop presence in the taste was a bit detracting.

Sampled at the Freetail and Real Ale barrel-aged festival.

The beer pours an amber color with a white head. The aroma is strong on the toffee malts. The flavor is a little bit different. I get notes of piney and grassy hops along with some toffee malt. The hop bitterness and malty sweetness is very well balanced in this beer. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On tap at the brewpub in the outskirts of San Antonio.

Clear deep amber color with a durable off-white head that leaves fine lacing.

Aroma: sweet and simple.

Flavor: loaded with caramel and roasted grains, it also has a surprising chocolate tone.

Feel: light-medium body and near medium carbonation. .

O: modestly above average for style.

Tasting notes from 3/31 visit to brewery. Matte copper color. Foamy clingy. Bready caramel nose. Soft open, high toffee taste. Breads. Light pine bitter. Good balance.

Served in a pint glass a somewhat hazy medium copper color with the beer filled nearly to the brim (argh), so pretty much foamless.

Clean, nutty and slightly burnt toast aroma with a noticeable amount of sweetness in there...almost like pancake batter.

Toasty malts and a fair amount of hops make this a decently bitter brew with a biscuity and brazil nut feel to it. Not an overly huge fan of toasty amber ales, but this one is stylistically well brewed. It is nice and creamy feeling with a good malt/hop balance. Not bad at all, I think this is their flagship beer, and one of their more sessionable beers.

a: light amber. pours about a qtr finger bubbly white head. nice ring forms around the rim. some nice beer ring lacing.

s: butterscotch and baked bread.

t: a little bitter and pungent combination with a nice flavor of freshly baked Italian bread.
