Brown and ruddy in appearance, super thin 1/7" tan head. Great aroma, dark fruit, charred malt, coffee from the malt and toffee notes. Complex.

Taste, a good amount of acetic acid, vinegar like aspect pairing with darker malt. Full on carbonation, alcohol noticeable, dark cherry and dark fruit bitterness as well as tartness.

An interesting and unique enough beer. Closes up drying. Would bang again at the right price. Wouldn't chase.

22oz. bomber into Torst stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a .5 finger frothy cream colored head with poor retention. Beer is a dark, almost opaque brown-mahogany. Lacing is spotty, stringy and sparse with minimal stick. Pretty average overall.

Nose is tart plum, prunes and ascetic acid. A slight oakiness in the background with a sprinkle of burnt malt. Rather clean with great aromaticity. I like it.

Opens sweet and tart plum and prunes. Good acidity in the middle with more dark fruit, oak, leather, some farmhouse funk, and a mild sweetness. End is some burnt malt and tartness. Aftertaste of dark fruit and ascetic acid. Pretty simple but very good.

Light bodied with high carbonation. Prickly and lively in the mouth and goes down aggressive, carbonated, and messy. Finishes pretty mellow with a light, lingering, dry aftertaste. Really enhances the flavor.

A very solid but simple beer overall. Light, aggressive mouthfeel accentuates the tart, acidic fruit flavor. Definitely worth a try. One of the better dark sours I've had.

Served from a wax sealed bomber into a Hill Farmstead stemmed tulip. Served just below cellar temps.

Appearance- Dark tawny/brown color with one finger of off-white bubbly head sticking around the top of the beer. Very dark, can't see through it at all.

Smell- Definantly port grapes up front. They're sweet grapes, with very little acidic aromas. Closely following the grape, is cherries and oak. Mild lemon/vinager at the end.

Taste- This is a very layered beer. First I get some mildly tart cherries, but they're followed quickly by sweet and tart (at the same time) grapes. Finish has tons of port flavors. I taste the boozy sweet port, but I get no booze heat. Finishes sweet, smooth, and extremely clean with no harsh acidity.

Mouthfeel- Very full mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Good viscosity and relatively easy drinkability.

Overall- I thought that this was a nice barrel aged wild ale that had various layers in both aroma and smell, but I wanted the body to be a bit more bubbly and light. Maybe the 7.2% had to do with the heavier body. All the same, this was a nice treat from Texas.

Had at a recent Philly 'burbs bottle share.

Ruby-brown pour, with a small, sturdy cap of off-white foam; moderate retention and lacing. Berry aroma, lactic and slight acetic notes. On the palate, vinous notes, cherry and cranberry, tart and acetic, but manageable, earth and mineral, with some of the caramel malts coming through in a minor way. Medium body, moderate (maybe slightly high) carbonation. Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid and enjoyable wild ale overall.

My first Freetail sour....

Pours a dark, weak coffee brown with a fine sheet of light tan foam. Smells like tart, dark grape juices, some currant, a little oak, some leather and balsamico. Lovely nose. Nice and sour with cherry, grape, and raisin. Some oak, some sugar, a little bit of tobacco leaf. Light bodied balanced well with the slight sweetness and medium carb with a watering finish. I really, really enjoyed this beer. Would love to have more.

Big thanks goes out to BeerBuddy2122 for sending me this one as part of a past trade! Shared this one at one of our Random Sunday Tastings! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a deep ruby red brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, wood, fruit, sour, dark fruit, earth, and funk. The flavor was of sweet malt, funk, fruit, tart, sour, dark chocolate, earth, and wood. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. I went into this one not really knowing what to expect. However, what I found was actually not too bad. There was a nice touch of balance going on with the earthy/roasty notes along with the tart and funky notes. The barrel definitely also made its presence known throughout each sip with the nice notes of wood and fruit. A really well done brew that I would definitely enjoy having again in the future.

So...something along the lines of "Port Cock"... Okay. This stuff pours a deep mahogany topped by a finger of glowing off-cream foam. The nose comprises tart black grapes (couldn't tell you if they were Porto grapes or not), red wine (something akin to a Malbec), and some musty oak in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a hint of cranberry. Everything is decidedly tart here, though somehow not enough to cause intestinal issues in the morning for a lesser man. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry, sticky finish. Overall, a tasty sour, one that seems like a one-note song, but one that doesn't grow quite as tiresome as such musical entrees.

Poured into snifter. Appearance is dark brown with reddish hue. Small amount of head that is short lived. Nose is heavy with cherries, grape skin, fruit juice, a touch of oak, and a slight acidic kick. Taste is is tart up front but not really entering the territory of vinegar. Nice amount of depth and interplay between sweet and sour. The sweet comes on a bit stronger than the tartness. Mouthfeel is a bit heavy with medium carbonation. Overall, a nice beer with lots of character.

Bomber into a snifter. The brew appears an amber color with red hints around the edges and tab cap that retains decent. A swirl brings about a finger back to the surface.

The smell is vinous and tangy with a bit of vinegar. Mildly fruity alcohol inclusion. Some minerals and funky cheese round out the nose.

The taste is vinegar with fruit and herbal hops. A modest inclusion of alcohol is noted. Almost a salty to savory aftertaste with a hint of soy sauce oxidation lingers in the mouth.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is unique and overall fairly easy drinking. Unique and worth a try but nothing terribly exciting.

22oz bottle, from the 2012 release, into a tulip.

A: Pours a dark brownish-red with a decent light tan head. The color of the body is like that of a very dark red wine.

S: Strong horsey and pineapple-like brett pushes forward in the nose, along with light vinous tannins and a bit of sweet caramel malt.

T: More horseblanket and light acetic acidity from the brett, a bit of lactic and lemony tartness, and a moderately charry note of roasted grain in the finish. Very light port and oak tannins mid-palate. Relatively dry.

M: Medium-bodied with light carbonation. Dry, puckering feel.

O: Although this seems to be the most complex of the Freetail wilds I've had (especially in terms of bugs), it's a bit rough around the edges. The brett is pretty extreme, and the roasted note on the end is a bit too strong. Like the other Freetail sours I've had, this is tasty enough, but the program has a ways to go if it wants to be on the same level of quality as Russian River, Cascade, Lost Abbey, Allagash, etc...

Appearance: Pours a chocolate brown color with ruby port highlights; an inch of tan foam stacks on top of the liquid, leaving a smattering of dots and dashes around the tulip glass

Smell: Lactic sourness complements the berry, cherry and grape notes

Taste: Blackberries, cherries and grapes dominate the opening, with the lactic sourness building through the middle; underneath the tart flavors is a subtle undertone of fortified port, though the sweetness really doesn't come through in a meaningful way; in the finish, the oak joins the profile though there is quite a bit of puckering sourness in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: Unlike a lot of dark sours, this beer doesn't overwhelm with caramel malt flavors (which often fail to work well with the sour flavors); I am really impressed by the way the flavors complement each other, with the port barrel adding a distinctly different tone

A - Pours a brown with a fizzy one inch light brown head that fades slowly.

S - Oaky, acidic, and wine-like.

T - Tart, woody acid, port wine.

D - Decent carbonation and a medium body.

O - Fizzy and tart with lots of barrel characteristics and som port residue. I enjoyed it.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

Appearance: The beer pours a reddish brown/dark amber color with a ring of off white head that goes away.

Smell: There is a dark sour funk that reminds me a bit of red berries. I'm also getting a sweet component that reminds me of brown sugar.

Taste: This one is quite tart up front with a good amount of sweet brown sugar malt to balance things out. There is some vinegar and a red berry like tartness. The finish is tart.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with just a hint of tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: Dark sours aren't my favorite, but I thought this one was pretty good. I'd have more if someone offered.

The beer is reddish amber hued with an inch of foamy beige head. The aroma offers red wine, tannins, oak, acetic yeast, port, currants. Smells nice. The flavor follows suit, offering nice complexity and balance. A nice tart finish with alcohol content well disguised. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A delightful beer to sip and savor.

Bottle: Poured a deep red/dark burgundy color ale with a average size foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of oak and vinous notes with light acidic notes. Taste is a nice mix between some port notes with light woody notes and some vinous notes. Acidity level is quite balanced with a nice level of tart notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice sour ale with good overall balance.

22 oz bomber pours a dark brown color with a frothy cap of tan head. Retention is average but the lacing is wall-ish and superb.

Nose is tart and lacto-esque with some sweet hints of dark berries and blackened sugar. Maybe a light port wine character, but not as influential as I would have thought...probably would not notice it if you didn’t know it was there.

Mmm, very smooth lacto tartness on this one, if that makes any sense. Rolls just fine from berry-sour to cocoa-grainy malt and finishes with a sharp twang and bubbly carbonation. Damn, this is really tasty, I wish I had bought a few more now. Usually not a big fan of the darker sours, but this one has less roast and overall malt heft than most. The port barrel treatment seems to have complimented the lacto extremely well in this case. Very, very good beer. Kinda flies under the radar (no bat-pun intended), but damn, I am digging the shit out of this one.

Pours murky dark red/mahogany with a decent sized tan head leaving some retention and lacing.

Lots of bold cherry aroma. Dark fruits and some nice sourness. Vinous oaky port notes as well with a bit of vinegar.

This is delectable. Big dark fruit flavors along with an intense sourness that features more vinegar than the nose although at a good level. Big port notes complement the base. Very acidic and all flavors go well together.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation. Tartness and oak linger on the palate.

One of my more pleasant beer surprises recently. Great tartness along with port characteristics. Not incredibly complex, but what is there melds perfectly. Very glad to have tried this one.

s - nice tart smell. some cherry...don't get any port.

t - really tasty. brown ale with cherry and a nice barrel glazing. great tart with some sour egginess in there.

A: pours an extremely dark red/purple that is nearly brown in color, very nice carbonation and creates about 1/2 fingers worth of light tan head formation. Suprised on how dark this body is and swirling the glass creates a quick fizz.

S: wow, this is awesome. big tart cherries, black berries and raspberries are extremely well balanced with one another. these are complemented by big port-wine body with the oak lying in the background. some vinegar comes through and quite inviting. And just smelling this the first time got my mouth taste buds fired up.

T: a bit more vinegar comes through here, as does the port-wine characters. the acidic fruits are still very well present but not as prominent in my opinion as the nose suggested. the oak again is subtle and sits quite nicely with the entire brew.

M: medium bodied, full of carbonation, creates immense salivation, slight vinegar and acidic after taste is left on the palate. (wish that the tart fruits lingered a bit longer)

O: a very solid brew all the way around. its a fantastic representation for the style and has moderate complexity. I admit that I'm still relatively new to this style of beer, but I'm already hooked. The port-wine characteristic in this one really shines through more so than other wild ale's that i've tried, which i really thought was appealing.

A- pour dark dirty brown with a fizzy head that disappears quickly. No lacing.

S-Leather, cherries, tartness

T-leather flavors, ripe plums, mild tartness with a toffee/leathery finish with faint port flavor and oak character.

M-medium mouthfeel, good amount of fizzy carbonation. Lingering leathery notes.

O- very easy drinking. Not too tart, not too sweet. Good carbonation. I could drink this all day long. Good.

#BOTG 161! 1 more to go. Thanks to my buddy Will (Canandianghetto) for getting this one for me from Freetail. Poured from bottle into Jester King Farmhouse glass. This one gushed when I popped the bottle, but settles down once it got in the glass. It pours a dark mahagony brown/red color, creamy head remains on the top of the beer, off white color. Smell- band aid funk, tart cherries, strawberries. Taste- up front it is not sour. Some mellow cherry notes, maybe some funk. Not much richness that I was expecting from the smell. At the end I get a tart lacto sourness, but it is subdued, around the back of my mouth and sides of my tongue. I have a feeling that this will develop more over time and become more sour. Its an easy drinker for 7%, but I do wish it had more complexity. This is good, not great, but has potential.

A: Chocolate cloudy brown with very light tan head that recedes quickly and leaves some lacing
S: Funk and citrus undertones, definitely a sour
T: Sour right up front and dominant, with some citrus and a malty underbelly
M: thin and lively, the carbonation is spritzy
D: certainly a sipper of a beer, very nice sour but pungent

On tap at the brewpub.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma has a lot of dark fruit and cherries, as well as some toffee malt. The flavor is quite funky, with some leather notes to go along with some barnyard funk. I also get some tart cherries and tart grapes, as well as a hint of sweetness from the toffee malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
