Moving up to Saranac Lake soon (landed a job in Lake Placid) so I am trying to familiarize myself with more of Lake Placid's beers other than Ubu Ale (which is admittedly pretty darn good). Although this brewery doesn't keep too many beers on tap at any one time what they do offer has been good in my experience and I am eager to try this IPA and see how Frostbite IPA compares when it is offered.

A - Pours much darker than I anticipated. A hazy dark ruby-amber with a 2 finger tan head. Very thick, sticky head with good retention and lacing.

S - I can already tell this will be more of a West Coast style IPA. Very floral citrusy hops with plenty of sweet, bready malt backbone.

T - Much like the nose. Incorporates some great grapefruit and piney hop flavors into one IPA but also has that toasty aspect that you find in IPAs such as DFH 60 Minute. Usually I find that IPAs fall into either of those two general categories (fruity/citrusy or toasty/bitter) but this one incorporates aspects of both of those types. Finishes a little bitter and dry and a nice earthy hop taste lingers on the tongue. Lots of flavor and little alcohol in the taste, nice.

M - Medium bodied and I like the amount of carbonation quite a bit. Creamy and smooth as far as IPAs go.

D - Very flavorful but I don't taste the alcohol too much. At 7% I think a couple will do just fine.

Overall, very tasty and definitely much better in a growler/on draft than I remember it being in a bottle. I will definitely keep this one in my rotation as I move up to the area in a few weeks.

Poured a deep rich copper with a tight one finger slightly off white head that left a ring of lace as it setled.Big pine aromas mixed with caramel malt seemed a bit toasted in the nose as well, ver blanced flavors starts out with a big caramel base and somewhat biscuity and turns quite piney and resiny thru to a long finish.Somewhat prickly in the mouth but not a major problem and the balance of this brew makes it very quaffable.A nice beer to drink and now brewed year a round I'll visist again.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, clear, amber in color

Smell: caramel and pine hops

Taste: big citrus hops, small pine hops, lots of caramel--some of the aftertaste reminded me of juicy fruit gum

Mouthfeel: light bodied, medium carbonation, slightly sweet with bitter elements

Drinkability: A nice floral and fruity IPA that goes down very easily. Really impressed with this one. Could have a pint or two.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is basic IPA. I get notes of orange, pine and caramel malt. The flavor is caramel malt, toffee and some piney hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Slightly hazed dark copper with a half inch cap of off-white evenly bubbled foam that lingers long.

Low aroma of bready malt and floral hops.

Balanced flavor of malt and hops, neither one seems to take over, but neither one seems to impress either. Firm honey and grainy light brown sugar malt, with orange juice and flowers riding over the top. Hops is the slightly dominant flavor, clean and citrusy.

Full and even mouthfeel, fairly drinkable, but not earthshaking.

This is a pretty enjoyable IPA. It pours a nice copper color. The head was not overwhelming. The smell was of a fruity alcoholic nature. The taste was pleasant: somewhat fruity, hoppy, and with some sweetness from the malts. This is a descent choice if the opportunity presents but not something worthy of searching out.

Poured into becker pint glass; slightly cloudy darker amber with a thick fluffy off-white head which fades after a bit into a nice disc of foam, leaving excellent lacing. Smell is spicy floral and piney hops with a strong malt presence. Taste follows naturally, spicy hops, a few fruity notes and subdued malt with a nice bitter finish/aftertaste.

Appearance: Clear brassy-amber body. Pollen-colored frothy head fades quickly but leaves plenty of lace.
Smell: Piney, resinous hops perched on a bed of caramel malt.
Taste: Semi-sweet malt to start. Pine/cedar resins with citrus and bitter hops at the top. Dries abruptly leaving an evergreen aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Crisp carbonation.
Drinkability: This is one hoppy pale ale... in a more piney fashion than many others. Distinctive and an enjoyable seasonal.

Lake Placid- IPA

A- Clear golden copper ornage with a decent frothy head. Billowy white lacing, not bad.
S- sweet buttery malt. slight citrusy hop notes.
T- Thick buttery sweet malt, caramel malt, and a touch of citrus hops.
M- Big maltiness throughout, slick and sweet with a slight dry hoppy bite in the end.

Overall- Uneven, very malt heavy. Drinks fine though. Tasty, but needs to be hoppier.

Beautiful clear amber color with a good foamy head that lingered as I sipped this pint.

Aroma seemed to be apricot and juniper.

In the taste I caught peaches and some citrusy notes. Good hop balance, not overhopped like many IPAs I've had. It does "bite" at first with a piney or junipery note. Finish is smooth, hop bitterness lingers in a pleasant way.

I was surprised that this was 6.8% abv. I would have imagined more like 6% from the ease of drinking. Good hop and malt balance; overall a fine effort from Lake Placid. I haven't had a bad beer from them yet.

Was worth the trip to Blue Tusk if just for this. Hoppiness and spicyness worked. An over-the-top pale, like an IPA. Nice copper brown colour, grapefruit spicy loral aroma. Dry and bitter aftertaste, and certainly drinkable. Winter ale. Must get more.

Lake Placid's Frostbite pours a hazy mahogany and deep chestnut body beneath a massive head of creamy dark-tan foam. The nose is loaded with citrusy (mostly grapefruit, some orange/lemon... perhaps some Simcoe and/or Amarillo?) and piney hops over a bready and caramelish malt base. It's medium-full in the mouth with a moderate carbonation that leaves it quite smooth and creamy. The flavor is as the nose suggests with a wider maltiness that's bready, caramelish, and honey-drizzled. The balance between hops and malt is quite nice, as is the general balance of the beer, with a very firm bitterness backing it. It finishes dry with a quick fading notes of honey and caramel accented malt, some residual bitterness, and lingering piney/citrusy hops. Very well done! Highly recommended!

YUMMY!!!

Reminds me of my favorite IPA on draft at the Cannon Brewpub in Columbus, GA named Special OPS. Anyone who has served at Fort Benning in the US Army Rangers knows where I mean.

And here it is in a bottle, something they can't do in GA...not to mention Lake Placid Craft Brewery is 1200 miles away.

Hops, but not too much. Tastes like another...I'm going back to the fridge.

On-tap at Kelly Cole's.

Nice, but unimpressive. Amber body with a little white head. Smells and tastes of english hops, piney and a biting, but not terrible complex in either flavor or aroma. The malt could stand up a little more as the beer comes out a little thin. Still a nice IPA, nothing to go out of your way to try though.

I purchased a growler of this IPA after a tasting at a local distributor.

This pours a nice golden amber with a cream colored head with great lacing. the head stuck around the entire glass.

The nose is nice and hoppy with a subtle piney hoppiness.

The taste matches the nose with a nice crisp hoppiness with a nice subtle pine note.

The mouthfeel is clean and crisp and I found myself chugging this fine brew as opposed to tasting it.

Overall this is a very nice IPA that fits into the spectrum of IPA's that I find pallatable. A very easy drinking beer which is dangerous when your hovering around the 7.0% ABV.
