Presentation: 12 ounce bottle. As per the BA Database picture, it has a main obverse label that covers some 300° of the bottles circumference. Named after “the mountain village of Lake Placid was once home to a legendary chocolate lab named Ubu – the biggest dog you’ve ever seen with an uncanny nose for great beer”. No strength or freshness date listed.

Appearance: Darkish brown body, but when held to the light, the chestnut brown body exhibits some ruby hue which is created by the diffracting light. Tipped and righted, it almost exhibits minimal dissolved carbonation, yet it maintains a good size head from the first pour. Subsequent pours help to reinstate a thick light tan creamy head and some minimal but nice looking lacing.

Nose: Has a fine milk chocolate aroma set into a malty nose that benefit from English Hops, which I assume are Fuggles (?), in the back end.

Taste: Malts with some chocolate texture and a creamy feel that smooth the entrance before the hops lend a bitterness to the middle. Fruity with some dark bitter chocolate, roast malts and a mildly warming feel in the stomach once swallowed. The finish is dry and bitter with a nice creamy malt feel in the mouth. This has a very tasty profile.

Mouthfeel: Creamy texture with a nutty feel in the middle, dry bitter finish with some roasted qualities. Note - I got side-tracked halfway through drinking this with a phone call. Upon my return I noted that it tended to develop a little stickiness as it warms, I would suggest you ensure that you drink this one chilled.

Drinkability: My second Lake Placid beer (thanks to McCall) and this too is another quaffer! It benefits from a creamy texture, nice malts and a balancing bitterness which all help to somehow make you forget about the 7% ABV. Drinks well for the strength.

Overall: This is a dark Bitter Ale with a decent creamy feel, and a hop finish that lends a lovely balance and quaffability to the Ubu Ale. The label refers to its “English-Style” and I tend to agree, very much like a nice fresh Bitter Brown Ale at times. Lovely!!

Cheers and Beers to McCall for allowing me to sample this one. Very Nice!

Chocolate and roasted malt aroma. Chicory and toasted nut flavor with an almond skin bitter finish. Too hoppy for the traditional English style. Named after a chocolate lab. I'll take Olive over Ubu any day. Sorry Ubu.

Pours a dark brown that held up to the light is actually a deep burgundy. What head there is disappears quickly. Smell is sweet and malty, with a hint of nuttiness and maybe a bit of chocolate. A burst of hops hits you on first sip, but semi-sweet malty flavors take over from there. Fairly heavy and a bit buttery, it's actually quite balanced and smooth. Very tasty, in fact, and easy to drink.

Appearance: Cloudy, dark copper-brown color. Upon pouring, developed about a one finger foamy head which quickly dissipated.

Smell: roasted malt, dark chocolate

Taste: roasted malt up front, copper on the finish

Mouthfeel: somewhat sharp, slightly bitter, not too heavy, not too light

Overall: A friend gave me this beer to try. A very OK beer. It really didn't wow me or impress me, but I wasn't turned off by it either. Completely drinkable. This would be a good beer to have when you want something that's slightly robust but you want only one.

One of my favorite ale's. Ubu is a dark ale that has a rich really nice finish. Great out of a tap or in a bottle. The brewery is in my town so this beer is easy to find and on tap at most bars. It's a good beer to start the night off with, sitting there with friends enjoying an Ubu. there is even a nice story behind the beer, about a dog and such, I'm not going to spoit it for you read it yourself. Highly recomend, if you are in New York, look it up.

A: Color is beautiful. Rich, deep, dark red. Head was tannish-red, poured with about a finger's worth. It disappeared quickly. Light lacing, no sticky trails on glass.

S: Malty aroma with a real rustic, woodsy, pine-y scent. Definitely reminiscent of the Adirondacks.

T: Malty at first with a hint of the woodsiness. Hops hit toward the end, and linger for a while in what is an unexpectedly long finish. The bitterness gets less enjoyable the longer the finish goes. Also the presence of some smoky and musty flavors, which add to the rustic feel of this brew.

M: For a dark (almost brown) ale, this has a really light mouthfeel.

D: Sort of like Newcastle, in that it's a dark beer that drinks like a lighter beer. You absolutely cannot tell that this is 7% abv.

A very drinkable beer that masks the 7%, had on tap at BEFFs.
Poured a dark brown, smelled a bit sweet with hops, tasted a little sweet as well, with a touch of hops but not too much of any flavor. Ive had it in a bottle before and thought it was very good but it is better on tap

On draught at the Brklyn Beergarden in JFK, Ubu ale is dark garnett with a small tan collar leaving light lace.

Smell is mild, sweet caramel malt.

Taste is also pretty mild oddly. Very little here for a fairly sizable beer. Mostly just a little sweet malt mid-palate before a bone-dry, slightly acrid finish.

Mouthfeel is dry, with very full, creamy carbonation.

Drinkability is ok. So little flavor that it is effortless to drink, but it's far from inspiring or anything I'd want to drink again given a choice.

Thanks to Sam for providing this sample, having thought of me while vacationing in Lake Placid!

Pours a dark brown, with a fizzy, cola-like head that lasts a good, long time. The nose is dominated by dark roasted malts, but bits of dark chocolate and coffee, and a touch of ripe fruit sneak through. The flavor begins with a sweet, fruity character which slowly evolves into a rich, bitter finish. The aftertaste is mainly of bitter hops and lasts for a very satisfying length of time. It's a tad fizzy for my taste, but I'd gladly have another. The ABV wasn't noted on the bottle, and I'm surprised to learn here that it's 7%. Dangerous if not known ahead of time!

A - Pours a deep, rich mahogany with a nice frothy half inch head that leaves a nice lace in its wake.

S - rich, malty sweetness with an accent of roasted malt. In the background is a slight floral hop. This beer smells nice.

T - taste is reminiscent of a porter. At first is the sweet but slightly roasted malt. There is a small hop bitterness towards the finish followed by a very small hint of alcohol.

M - a nice creamy, smoothness rounded out by a wee bit of "alcohol" warmth

D - very drinkable. Do I want to throw down a dozen? No! Could I? Yes. But this beer should be relished and savored and above all tasted while drinking it. Is this beer good for 3 or 4? Heck yes. This is a nice beer. I would recommend it.

Pours a reddish brown with a fairly slight head. Smells malty and fruity with cherries and grapes. Very fruit-cake like. Delicious beer, if rather simple. Slightly sweet with flavors of mixed glaceed fruit, and caramel as well as some citrusy hops in the mix. Smooth and creamy, and at 7%, this a strong ale you can put away without too much worry.
