Lake Placid Craft Brewing Company
New York, United States

Style: English Sweet / Milk Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.90%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is our version of a milk stout, originally named Fresh Powder Milk Stout. A milk stout is simply a stout brewed with an addition of Lactose, a non-fermentable milk sugar, used to create sweetness and a fuller body and mouthfeel in the beer. This is the sweetest stout that we brew, not only because of the addition of lactose, but because of the low hop bitterness, and higher residual sugar content. It is very full bodied beer, often perceived as thick and creamy.

Appearance: Dark, dark, dark brown, almost pitch black, but there is a thin layer of brown light at the edges of the glass. There is almost not foam or lacing.

Smell: Malted milk ball and chalky chocolate. Very clean.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Flavor is highly malted. Biscuit, chocolate, and plenty of molasses or malt syrup. Mouthfeel is extremely crisp with a great light-medium body. Very bubbly with a smoky finish.

Overall Drinkability: Not a world-class stout, but a very refreshing and above average one.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a dark brown with a 1 finger light khaki head. Head is a thin film after a minute or two, doesnt leave much lacing.

S: Sweet lactose and chocolate malts really highlight the aroma. There is some dark fruitiness in the background as well.

T: Has a roasty chocolate malt combined with the sweetness of the lactose. Hops are suppressed. Some coffee notes too.

M: Smooth creamy mouthfeel. Pretty dry and refreshing, very drinkable.

Overall I'm impressed with this new bottle from Lake Placid. Great for the winter time.

A: Pours a massive light mocha head with sticky lacing and spiderwebs the entire way down.

S: Aroma of bittersweet chocolate, lactose, black malt.

T: Very well rounded milk stout. I was completely amazed when looking on here at what the abv was as it was so flavorful. For a milk stout, this has done very good in terms of flavor. Light chocolate malt flavors, patent and chalk flavors from the lactose and a dry finish. Not much hopping in here intentionally and it is additionally sweet because of this.

M: Dry and well carbonated.

O: Overall this is a very good milk / sweet stout. It is not a high octane beer and it is extremely drinkable. I would love to have this available locally as it could be a regular in the rotation because of the low abv and enjoyable taste profiles... Recommended

A- Poured into a standard pint glass. Pours jet black with 2.5 fingers thick light brown head. Good retention and good lacing as well.

S- For a beer that "only" comes in at 4.9%/ABV the alcohol hits the nose with surprising assertiveness. A subdued dark roasted note follows, most noticeably that of a pleasing black coffee aroma. A hint of bittersweet chocolate is present as well. Barely noticeable esters.

T- Taste very much like it smells, but is considerably more balanced. Again, for a 4.9%/ABV beer the alcohol is very noticeable, but is mellowed out by a pleasant but not overpowering sweetness provided by the lactose (milk sugar). A roasted black coffee note is more noticeable here, as is the bittersweet chocolate. Their bitterness really balances out the alcohol and residual sugars. Easy-drinking stout.

M- Quite full-bodied and creamy. The residual sugars definitely contribute to the full-bodied character. For me, carbonation was a tad too high, but that's mostly just a personal preference.

O- A very accurate representation of the style. Easy to drink and quite difficult to put down. Just what doctor ordered for cold central NY nights. Would definitely recommend.

Pours a deep black with about an inch of tan head.

Smells of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malts.

Tastes fairly similar. Roasty with hints of coffee and chocolate. Nothing is too overpowering and everything blends well together. Also its not too sweet which you can find sometimes with milk stouts. It is a tad bit over carbonated..The bite of the carbonation takes away some of the taste and cuts into the smoothness.

Overall an easy drinking Milk stout. Nothing too crazy and definitely worth revisiting.

S-roasted caramel malt sweetness with a toffee and chocolate aroma
T-roasted caramel malt that goes to a coco type bitterness that stays with you till the end
M-full body and low carbonation
O-I was not expecting much from this beer, but I was surprised it had a great taste.

Poured a deep brown hue with a two finger foamy tan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured roasted barley and a touch of caramel.

The taste consisted of a sharp roasted malt softened by a touch of lactose sweetness. Excellent residual dry coffee and dark chocolate detected.

The mouthfeel was toward the thinner side of the style with a dry finish.

Overall a very tasty and extremely quaffable stout.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Nice black color, with a tan head that disappears all too quickly. Not much in the node except dark bread and smoked malts.

The taste makes up for the deficiencies in the nose. Definitely tastes like a milk stout. It's nice to drink a stout that is full in flavor and mouthfeel that doesn't bludgeon you with alcohol.

It's not an outstanding brew, but I'll be seeking this one out again.
