My wife and I went to New Braunfels during our honeymoon. Being a lover of German Beers, I was stoked to see what New Braunfels had to offer. Well, this was the most German-ish place I could find in the town.

I must say that, beerwise, I am fairly disappointed in Friesenhaus. The bar had a kind of sterile vibe about it. Everything was so clean and neat, and sadly, all the beers were typical and apparently never rotated. In our beertenders words, "Why change them out if they are making money. I only change if they don't sell." Sadly the only things that must sell there are your regular lineup of Spaten, Paulaner, Franziskaner, and (the one pretty decent beer they had) Aventinus. Also, I asked the guy if I could bring in my own mug, to which he scoffed.

One last thing, Underberg shots were 4 bucks! I've never paid over $1.75 for one of those in my life.

Come here for the food, come here for the atmosphere, come here to buy affordable lederhosen, but don't expect to geek out on beer.

This is an excellent German style restaurant. One of the most authentic German Beer Halls I have experienced. Granted I have never been to Germany, but the owners are Germans and know their stuff. As you walk in the front door, there is a small market of German sausage, ice cream, and authentic German wear. The restaurant is made up of some wood tables, and a separate bar with the 15 taps displayed. No TV's, and some German music playing low. They also have every single glass in every single size you can imagine of what they have on tap.

The selection is nothing to brag about, but they have 15 very good German beers on tap. Paulaner Salvator, Aventinus, lots of Hofbräu, Spaten, Köstritzer Schwarzbier among the other regular German beers you would find. The quality is is excellent though. To many places claim to have good German beer, which may be the case. The quality is always something to be desired however. That is not the case here. Incredibly well maintained, fresh, and clean.

The service is nothing short of excellent. It is a family run establishment that are German immigrants, and they run this like a traditional German beer hall. They are all friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Not just about the beer, but the German wine, sausage, tea, and everything else they make.

Along with the service, the food is amazing. There is a ton of traditional German food here. The curry-wurst is my favorite. There is also plenty of sausage samplers, bread and cheese plates, and many other traditional items. All excellent.

Bottom line is this place does German fair right. Weather it be wine, sausage, Sauerkraut, German fried potatoes and red cabbage, or beer. This is as authentic as it comes in Texas. I can't recommend this place enough.

Freisenhaus is an authentic German style restaurant in downtown New Braunfels. The atmosphere is largely what you would expect from a German restaurant. Polka music when there's a band playing, advertisements for German beer all along the walls, and a small clothing area near the front entrance where you can buy authentic German clothing. The beer taps are in a small bar next to the dining room. You can either sit in the bar, or wait to be seated in the dining room. The quality here is above your average restaurant level, but nothing too extraordinary. The service is a bit slow in my opinion. Even on a slow night, we were still waiting quite a while for our waitress to return with drink refills, and eventually the ticket. If your in a rush, this could be a problem. However, the staff are very friendly, and most of them are actually German. They have a great selection of food to choose from, along with an impressive tap array of German only beer. For New Braunfels, this is as good as the beer selection gets in one spot. They have roughly 15 taps on the wall, with all the usual German beers. What impressed me was that they serve each beer in its correct glassware. They even offer 2 liter beer boots to larger groups. The food was really good, but may take some getting used to if your not familiar with authentic German food. The prices arent that much higher than any other restaurant. There beer runs about $4.75 for a .5L, and there food runs roughly between $8 and $15. I highly recommend this place if you are passing through New Braunfels. It doesnt get any better than this in New Braunfels.
