There is a large restaurant area with pool tables, and small bar area, and a modestly-sized deck. I went during off hours, but I expect the place has a loud, sports bar atmosphere during peak times. The openness between tables and layout of the room don't lend themselves to intimate conversation.

I had two brews: the Ned's Pale Ale, which was a tasty, drinkable, well-balanced beer that was very pleasant but didn't make a huge impression; and the Blackwater Stout, which was terrific--great mouthfeel, hearty yet smooth taste, interesting blend of flavors. I wish I could get it around here.

My rating for the service is based on two very different servers. I first sat down at the bar and asked a typical question, "What's good?" The bartender snarled and responded, "I don't drink beer. Just look at the menu." I then saw that the deck was open, so I went out there. The waitress for the deck was great. She was willing to talk about the beers, and when I asked if the nachos could have chicken added (an option not on the menu), she happily told me she'd work something out.

The nachos were the best and biggest I've ever had--and I've had lots. The quality of chicken was great.

Note: This place is a little hard to find for out-of-towners like me, but it's worth it.

visited on 7.3.08 on a road trip with Tim and Tyler to a family reunion in Ohio. IT is located in downtown Morgantown. Horrible parking for this place. very average at best looking place, kind of down trodden and dirty - standard bar type look and feel. dining area, pool tables, dartboards. 3 fermenter tanks behind a glass wall. 4 beers on tap. Blackwater Stout, NEds Pale Ale, Appalachian Ale, Grist Mill What. beers were less than average, almost a home brew taste to them. food and service were great.

A very friendly place, a small city not far off the route going to Pittsburgh, and 3.5 hours from Baltimore. Sizeable with rooms with their own taps, I finally find the active room where the people and the beer are. More people came up to me to talk without the fake smiles and inhibitions than several bars in the big city. Very decent beers, pleasant place and beer, clean and relaxing in this total college area. Not something to excitadly try their latest, but a definite slice of America. In a word, cute.

Right downtown. Parking is not good. There's some spots behind the building, but you're otherwise on your own. Popular lunch, dinner, and late night hangout.

Fairly short bar, but a lot of seating spread across 3 rooms. Live music all the time (except the night we were there) and a nice place to stop for a pint.

Brews are good, but not great. Personally, I get headaches from them almost all the time. There's only a few breweries that do this to me, must be something in their filtering?

Pool tables, darts, and otherwise normal bar activities await.

Out back is a lovely balcony/deck with seating during the nice warm monthes. Good views and fresh air were not in our plans the other night though, damn rain.

We didn't hang around for dinner, but when I used to hit up WVBC in college I remember the food being great.

EDIT: Learning of the change in ownership. I revisited 0n 5/9/08 and revised my 8/30/06 score. This time all the selections were available and all were fresh. The pale ale and stout are the favorites but none were stale or "off" this time. The service and the food were also improved.

This is a hit or miss kind of place. You just never know what to expect. On one visit you might find 2-3 decent brews and the food and service might be good on another everything-- and I mean everything--- might be lousy. It's not just the varied selection of beers because even the same beers vary widely from visit to visit.

It's worth a visit if you happen to be in Morgantown but even at its best it's mediocre and it's sometimes downright poor. Bear in mind too, this is a college town and the crowd is young and acts it. This is more a place to relive the good old days and have a few too many than to enjoy first class beer.

As a relatively poor college student with good (read: expensive) tastes in beer it is always a bit difficult to find a place where I can get my hands onto affordable, yet good beer. Add to this the fact that as much as I love this state, West Virginia has a dismal craft beer culture.

Luckily enough, Morgantown has the Brew Pub. The atmosphere of the place is pleasing to me. The main entrance opens onto a large, somewhat dimly lit dining room where one can order meals during the day. Towards one side, the dining room opens into the bar area itself. The bar and dining room are never very smoky and there is often a folk band playing in the dining room. This bar also refrains from playing deafening music, which is a welcome change from other Morgantown bars. While the beer might not rank up there with larger microbreweries, it is, by my standards, quite drinkable and enjoyable. There are usually around 5-7 beers on tap, with usually 4 year round brews and 2 season beers. Ned's Pale Ale is my favorite, followed by Appalachian Ale and Blackwater Stout. While I have not eaten there often, I find that the food is quite good and reasonably priced. Service is usually good enough, never bad, never exceptional. Overall, the Brew Pub is my favorite bar in Morgantown, and I hope to see this establishment continue to florish for many years to come.

If you are looking for a locally brewed beer in WV, there are few options. Arguably the oldest and best of those few is the WV Brewing Co (Brew Pub). The staples on tap are Cheat Mountain Gold, Appalachian Ale, Blackwater Stout and Ned's Pale Ale (named after the brewmaster and owner). NPA is definately the best with Blackwater and Appalachian following close behind. At any given time, the Brew Pub also has two to three seasonals on tap. Some examples have included - Pillowrock Pilsner, Old Man Winter Ale, Raspberry Wheat, GrisMill Wheat, Hippy Hoppy and an Oatmeal Stout. This is definately a hit and miss place being that they often have a dry tap or two. But, if you visit on the right day you can have a nice local beer experience. I would suggest stopping in on a Friday to take advantage of their $7 pitcher special.

WVBC is located on University Ave not too far from campus. They have a private lot behind the building that is kind of harrowing depending on the weather and how busy they are due to how little room there is to maneuver.

The interior is pretty open and there is restaurant seating in the front. In the rear there is a bar with brewing equipment viewable behind glass. There was a string band playing in the front on the evening I visited.

The current beer list is on a chalkboard and there were 4 available on my visit. According to the bartender they usually have closer to 6 with a seasonal or two. The beers run from Wheat to Stout and all are average to above average. There is a sampler available and the bar offers $1.50 10oz drafts on certain nights.

Service here is good, the bartender was very attentive and was apologetic that they did not have more beers available for their sampler.

Food at WVBC is good pub grub. My burger was very tasty.

Overall this is a nice little brewpub in Morgantown. While the beers aren't world class it's still a worthwhile stop.

I love this place! It has to be my favorite hang-out/restaurant/brew-pub in town. The service is almost always excellent (occasionally you'll get a new server, but they pick it up pretty quickly. I think I've only ever had one bad server, who's no longer there). The beer is great (see my reviews on their brews); their standards are excellent and I always look forward to their seasonals.

They have a nice menu. Enough to choose from, but not big enough to make you have a rough choice of it.

Very affordable. I took my parents here when they came to visit and our bill, for four adults and one child, including a couple of pitchers, was probably half what it would be at a chain restaurant.

I enjoyed the layout of the place and the wood, so the atmosphere was the best feature for me. I spent a couple hours out on the deck with some friends. You can't see much of the river, but the open air is a nice feature.

The quality of beer was so-so for my taste and service seemed par. I think the selection of beer is what usually gets me going vs. food but I still enjoy a plentiful and varied food menu. I didn't eat any food, so I really can't comment in that dept.

I noticed an ad for tai chi in the bathroom and dart boards so it's possible to keep yourself occupied if you want a break or a stress reliever. I like the view of the fermenters and the Monongaheela most, though.

These last 3 hours on the road were not as fun and daylightish as the first 3. Found the hotel after stupid MapQuest had me ride some goat trail en route from the highway for a stretch. The people at the front desk laughed when I told them how I'd gotten there. Perhaps I'll punch them in the neck tomorrow morning during checkout. Got my local map, going to find local beer. It was easy locating University Ave, it's just that it winds up and around and down and around again, whoop, just passed it, I'll just cut a U'ie in the middle of the road here, I'm sure no one'll mind.

They've got a spacious corner location here. A pair of pool tables and a foosball table in the main room amidst 2 dozen tables of various size and shape. You need to pass through here to get at the bar in the next room. There's a corner brew room behind glass with about a half dozen tables running adjacent. An "L" shaped bar with a dinged copper top runs the far corner and seats 7 or so. Brick wall bar back with a center blackboard listing taps, and arches to both sides with shelves of booze over mirrored backing. A dozen plus bottles displayed on a shelf above. A single micro (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale), a few standard imports (Guinness, Bass, Harp, Newcastle), and macros. A corner fridge with a TV on top of it houses the bottled selections, ceiling fans and spots above, 3 dart boards towards the front of the room, Phil's golf game and a pair of pinball machines to the rear.

2 towers of 4 a piece on the bar, some empty. Of the 6 taps listed on the board (Appalacian Ale, Ned's Pale Ale, Cheat Mt Gold, Raspberry Wheat, Apricot Wheat, Blackwater Stout), only 5 were on, the Stout had kicked (Phooey!! Why is it always the Stout that's kicked?). The sampler of 5 ran me a big $3. The Appalacian Ale, medium bodied, dark amber/brown, decent maltiness; Ned's Pale Ale, a light copper color, nice hop flavor; the Mt Cheat Gold, a wah light Lager; the Raspberry Wheat, lightly Raspberried up, okay; the Apricot Wheat, sweet and fruit fresh, non cloying, quite good. The best of the lot of them were the Appalacian Ale and the Apricot Wheat, and the Ned's Pale Ale wasn't so shabby either. Handpump in the corner but I'm told nothing's been on it for well over a year.

And so I sat at the bar, drinking my Apricot Wheat, watching the bartender pour Jager & Red Bulls, and talking to the kids next to me thinking that you shouldn't have an accent like this being only an hour out of Pittsburgh (I'm sorry, but there's just no reason for it). I had some fun apparently or I wouldn't have drank Tequila (Ok, maybe I would have, but still). Sometime perhaps, I'll tell you about the girl who stuffs cocks for a living and her boyfriend who had his car towed from here to there for a mere $155. And the bartender laughed on.
Interesting local flavor.

I re-visited this place on 12/09/06.

Change of ownership here recently. The brewer is now the owner. This may bode well for the beer availability, which had been hit or miss the last couple years. They have finally updated the dining area so it looks presentable and actually has a bit of atmosphere. Menu is still limited but by all accounts the food they are serving is excellent.

All the year-round beers were available as well as two seasonal beers. Both were fruit beers oddly. A raspberry wheat and an apricot something. Both were good and the year-round stuff was great. The Ned's Pale Ale was maybe not as hoppy as I remember but then again it's been a while. Appalachian Ale was outstanding as was the Cheat Mountain Gold and the Black water Stout.

The $3 tag on the sampler is nice. The plastic cups only diminish the presentation slightly. Followed up with a pint of Ned's.

Service was above average. Our home-brew club met there and without even needing to ask, the waitress started us on separate checks. She was at our table frequently, even after we finished our meals and our house beers and started in to the homebrew.

I'd go here again for lunch, dinner, or just a couple of beers.

As I entered the West Virginia Brewing Company for the first time since the change of ownership I was immediately impressed. The place looks on hundred percent better than it did before. It is much brighter, cleaner and more inviting to everyone. What was once a place I would never take friends for dinner has now turned into a place I was excited to tell everyone about. So far, so good!

Good service was immediately evident. We were instantly greeted by a smiling waitress who was happy to be there and found us our seats.I started off with the sampler of all the beers currently on tap and was delighted to see six sampler glasses of their fine beer.
All were great, especially the Apricot Wheat and the Ned's Pale Ale. I am partial to the American Pale Ale and this one was a fine example.

The food also was excellent, although the menu at this time is quite limited. The Burgers are fantastic as well as the beer brat hoagie. As other friends arrived, the general opinion of the group was the same as mine. The new owners have made great strides in pumping life into a not too long ago, dying and floundering brew pub.

There is still some work to be done, but as of now, I am looking forward to bringing my wife in on saturday and introducing her to my new favorite hang out in Morgantown.

Great job Ned and crew, its a pleasure to have the West Virginia Brewing Company back again running on all cylinders!!!

The Brewpub.

In Dubbya-Vee, we can be a little parochial. Hence, even though there are brewpubs all over the United States, including a few more in WV itself, the WV Brewing Co. is "The Brewpub." When folks in Charlseton talk about "the Brewpub", this is of where they refer. 'Nuff said on this point.

I love the 'Pub. While getting my two post-grad degrees at WVU, I was a regular. Hell, for one semester, I was a fixture. I lobbied hard to get Neds Pale Ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1901/5958/?ba=rabsten on the list as a regular and not a seasonal. I took full advantage of wing night. I saw Karma to Burn, a now-defunct 3 piece instumental heavy metal band, play there like, 5 or 6 times. I've hosted tailgates with WVBC kegs. So, you see where I'm coming from.

The atmosphere is dark on the inside. It's in a converted warehouse near the old wharf, so it has some of that "rehab chic" from the mid-1990's going on. The brewing tanks are in full view, but it's rare to actually see anything going on. The deck out back is great, though, and sometimes ducks will come up from the river, so you can feed 'em fries and stuff.

The beers are very good. Neds Pale and the Appalachian Ale are both excellent. The Blackwater Stout (named after a WV river) is pretty good. And all the seasonals are at least worth a try. I Love the Olde Engine 86, but haven't seen it in a while. Same with the Boneyard. The Oatmeal Stout beats the Blackwater, hands down. There's also a full bar and selection of bottles, bot craft brewed and BMC. (Side note: the BMC's used to be few and far between there. I remember a Frat-rat coming in one evening and ordering a Michelob Ultra. The bartenders reply: "We serve *beer* here." He then stared at Frat-rat until he went away. Times have changed, though and the 'Pub has responded to the market: Mich Ultra is now available, but only in bottles).

The bar service is good. Wait staff, hit and miss. Don't try to order food from the bar unless the bartenders know you. There's kind of a division of labor in effect.

Selection used to be really good, of late it's been kind of spotty. There are supposedly 5 "regulars" and 2 seasonals, with a cask-conditioned selection too. Last 2 times I've been, there have been 2 to chose from. Two. I'm still giving it a 3.5, based upon the past and the potential future, in addition to the cooler of crafts (Great Lakes, Sierra Nevada's and Sam Smiths, among them).

Food is good, solid pub grub. The hamburger is one of two you can get cooked to order in Morgantown (Crocket's is the other). Wings are well above average, deep fried with proprietary sauces, not some pre-made crap wings. Several sandwiches of note, a good steak, beer soup (mmmm) and finally, the best fries in morgantown. I mean it, the best fries, Period.

Value is off tha' charts. $6.50 for growler refills. $2.50 pints all the time. $1 12's on special nights, $2 pint nights, $5 pitcher (1/2 gal) nights, 25 cent wing nights, and a rotating bartender's choice special.

Bottom line: I'm biased, but if you're in the neighboorhood - and by that I mean within an hour's drive, talking to YOU, Pittsburghers - it's worth a stop. Get a burger, pub fries, and a Neds Pale. You shant be disappointed.

I've been here several times, but somehow I haven't reviewed it yet. This place is located just off campus on the hill. It has adequate seating and a rather small bar that will seat around seven people. The brewing equipment is very visible behind a glass wall and you can watch the brewers do their work if you're there at the right time. They typically have around seven beers on tap and it's usually a fairly wide selection. Having eaten here a few times, I feel confident in saying that the food is very good for bar food. The prices are average and the people behind the bar seem to know quite a bit about the beers that they brew and serve.

The Brewpub, as the locals in Morgantown know it, is a fine place to get a very nice beer in the craft beer hell that is West Virginia.

The place is fairly good sized, with seating for about 12 at the bar and plenty of tables around the two rooms. The brewpub has a very nice charm to it, with the feel of an old hardware store to it. The place attracts all types of people. The Brewpub is very popular among students, sometimes with bands or contests (such as Quiz Night on Sunday), but during the day time the brewpub is quiet. WVBC also has great specials, from 5 dollar pitchers (Friday) to 1 dollar pint nights (Wednesday).

The brewpub usually has five or six beers available on draft. All of these beers are brewed at the brewpub (the equipment can be seen from the bar, behind glass). The selection includes: Ned's Pale Ale, Cheat Mountain Gold, Blackwater Stout, Appalachian Ale and one or two seasonals. They also have a nice bottle variety as well; with beers such as Great Lakes and Sammy Smith. However, they also serve up every macro known to man in bottles as well. The beers were all fresh and the tap lines were clean as well. The bottle of Sammy Smith Oatmeal Stout was also in very good shape.

The service is fine. They are college students; however they do not have any real beer knowledge, though the beers are served quickly and they are friendly. The food is quite good as well; I had the wings and they were fine.

In Morgantown on business and stopped by WV Brewing on a Wednesday night. The atmosphere is college bar with the brewery in plain sight behind glass. Large and open with a lot of video games around the bar and a separate area with another bar and lots of pool tables. There is a nice deck out back, but it was raining and I couldn't enjoy this part of the brewpub. The beer selection was a little light right now, but the quality was good. After having a sampler, I can say I wasn't blown away by any of the selections. However, they were all good solid, well-made and easy drinking beers. My favorite was a fairly agressive Appalachian Ale, which is billed as an american amber ale. Appearance was very dark in color (I'm guessing 50 srm), with a nice creamy head. Nose was slightly floral(maybe cascade hops). Taste was firmly malty upfront with a nice background of aforementioned hops. Finish was dry and slightly bitter. All in all, a very nice session beer. The food was equally satisfying. Portions are huge, very well made and inexpensive. I had the club sandwich which included turkey, salami and bacon on grilled garlic bread with a basil mayo with a side of some delicious homemade onion rings for about $7. There is live music almost nightly and tonight was bring your own instrument night. Oh yeah, after 10 pm 16 oz. drafts are a buck! A place that I will gladly return to when I am back in Morgantown!

Maybe I hit this place on a bad day. I really like some of their beers that I've had elsewhere, but on tap at the source was a disappointment. Taps poured slow with no head. Beers were astringent. The assistant brewer was present, I was sort of introduced to him by WVbeergeek, and he disappeared. Didn't try the food, but it didn't come highly recommended. Just a few steps above Foundry shortly before they went under, and in the minor leagues when compared to the now defunct Valhalla. Maybe that's not fair, it's a different market. Regardless, I won't be making a special trip down to WVBC. Meet a friend there, yes. Go there just to go there, no. Find their beers on tap elsewhere. They're bound to be better.

Cool place. Easy to find, I had printed out MapQuest directions to the place because I was going to be in the area. I waltzed in there at around 6:30 in the evening knowing I'd only to be able to have a couple brews during my pitstop. There are plenty of tables, but I wanted to find the brewing facilities and check out what the brewer has to work with. Found the end result of the brewing process [i.e. the draft towers] and chose a beer; Ned's Pale Ale. Very good. I thought it was similiar in some ways to Burning River; compliments to head brewer Ned. Had the Appalachian Ale afterwards, a good copper to brown colored ale chockfull o' roasty vienna goodness. Got to meet Ned. Like I said... cool place.

Known down here in Motown, as simply the Brewpub. The atmosphere of this place is amazing, there is always a great mixture of people there. College kids, business suits, a family eating lunch. Everyone goes to the brewpub, they have live music at least four nights a week not to mention their drink specials that. Wednesday nights starting at nine to close dollar pints, how about that.

Overall quality of this place is pretty good, the beer is great, and the staff is amazing. Just good people work down there, and that's all there is to it. The two brew masters Ned and Barret are both amazing brewers, and good people to boot.

Their regular lineup of house brews always available is Appalachain Ale, Blackwater Stout, Cheat Mountain Gold, Ned's Pale Ale (IPA), and they always have one or two seasonals going. Recently I have seen a rye brown, belgium ale, Bavarian hefe, Oatmeal Stout (nitro), and a kick ass czech style pilsner. Once again the brewers definitely know what they're doing. Oh, yeah I almost forgot they keep a pretty decent bottle selection for WV. They have four Great Lakes brews, Sam Smith's, and some imports thrown in there.

As for the food, I always indulge in one of their many sandwiches, but they have a plethora of different types of food. Bar foods, and nice a lunch and dinner menu.

Nice brewpub. Not a lot on tap, but what they had was very nice, if I remember correctly 5 beers, 4 standard and one seasonal which was a blackberry wheat wasn't bad when mixed with their stout. Neds Pale Ale a definite must, floral and hoppy, we took home a growler. The food was traditional pub fare and service was pretty good. The waiter knew a lot about what was on tap. I bet this is a great place to go to during football season.
